So happy you included Sogyeukdong in your journey. I love this song…and it’s also just another example of IU being a bridge to earlier musicians in Korea. Make sure to see her collab with Epik High, Jay Park and AKMU - which are coming a bit later (songs she is featured on).

Sogyeokdong is one of my favorite song of IU.
Well the music video would so much make sense if you know the Korean history in 1980s. Sogyeokdong is located in seoul ,korea. It is also the place where college students were forcibly recruited for mental education during the Chun Doo-hwan(dictator) administration. The goverment conducted large-scale inspections of civilians. About 1,100 college students who were brought to 'mental education' called the "academy greening project" were 'educated' and six young people died due to psychological and physical torture when they resisted.
Simply saying, the girl represnt a spirit of resistance and democracy.
In the mv, the girl handed the paper origami to the students. On that paper, Encouragement of democratization movement was written.
All the other students ignored her, but only the boy took her paper origami.
At the end of the music video, the girl is taken by the government out of the blue, and disappears, and the boy tries to find the girl. This is just a interpretation but maybe later the boy will follow her footsteps and join the democracy movement.
And IU represent all of us who are living in current time. She put the pinwheel on the snow to show respect or maybe condolences to the people who fougt for the democracy.
This is not official interpretation from Seotaeji(singer and producer) He only mentioned in one interview , that the music video is about a sad and beautiful story that happened in Sogyeok-dong in the 1980s from the perspective of boy and girl.
The song was released in 2014, during that time the daughter of a another dictator(park jung hee) was the president of Korea.
This was the message from Seotaeji that saying democracy is fading and we forget the past too quickly.

Thanks for the context! I love learning about the cultural history that's tied to music it always feels like it adds a richer understanding to the song. I already loved the song musically, but add this on top and I feel like it goes to another level ❤️

      What a deep explanation !!
      I'll add a bit.
I think you need to know who Seo taiji is.
He's seo taiji, THE seo taiji from seo taiji and the boys, the legendary group who "found" kpop in the 90's.
The single is actually has 2 A sides (seo taiji version and iu version), with 2 MV n 2 stories. Fun fact, even with heavy theme, the IU version managed to win Inkigayo once and fly quite high in chart (#4, if i'm not wrong)

Glad to have this reaction, since people rarely reacted to Sogyeokdong. This song is one of my all-time fav among IU discography.
Seotaiji is the one created the song, he asked IU to collab, but each sang by themselves in separate mv. So there are 2 MVs for Sogyeokdong... IU's mv is from the boy's pov ..while Seotaiji's mv is from the girl's pov.

@@SylverReacts If you are still confused what happened at the end of the MV, the girl was supposed to meet the boy "after the light goes out". During the time of dictatorship in South Korea, a daily curfew after dark was instituted, and the martial law was enforced to prevent liberal revolutionaries from organizing to threaten to overthrow the government. Girl's family was a liberal and a target of the secret police, the girl did not show up because the secret police raided her house and took her family away. The boy ran to her house, only to find an empty place. It was never explicitly stated in the MV, but it would be pieced together that at 11:26 when the boy looked up, he saw that the girl had hung herself.
It was a dark chapter in Korean history.

In Korea history there are some period that dictator appeared.
1980 ~ 1988 was the one of that period.
At that time, school boy used to wear a uniform like in this MV for military training.
Many people in Korea believe that this MV implies some hidden meaning concerned with this period.
Because “소격동” (Sogyeokdong) was one of the places where many people suddenly disappeared.

hmm my comment disappeared but yes as mentioned by other comments, there is a different pov of sogyeokdong where seo taiji sings.
and there is also a south korea history aspect when south korea was under authoritarian dictatorship. maybe the link got flagged so i shall not leave it here.
anybody who is interested can go search it up but it helps in understanding more in what is happening in the mv

Actually there are two MV for this song. Here's Seo TaeJi version. And you already know that the composer of this song is Seo.
