ABOUT ME: I'm James Dunne, a runner, sports rehabilitation therapist (similar to physical therapist) and coach based in the UK (Norwich and London).
Since 2007 I've been working with athletes focusing specifically on helping distance runners and triathletes overcome injury and improve performance through developing their individual running technique.
Running biomechanics and physical therapy are real passions of mine. I love to help runners run strong and stay injury free.

I did exclusively slow runs for 3 months, and while it definitely helped build my mileage and aerobic capacity, it added 3 minutes per mile to my pace that I'm still chipping away at. It's almost like a door is closed in my body/ mind... I know I still have speed on the other side. I just can't get the stupid door open! I'll try these tips.

Exactly. And if you are only running 1-3 times a week the 80/20 rule doesnt apply.

Did you run "slow" and maximize the range?
      It's all distance & speed.
For every speed there is a maximum distance that you can sustain.
Say you run 6 min/mile, which you can only do for 2 laps on the track.
Or, you run 8 min/mile, which you can sustain for 2 miles before slowing down.
Or, even 12 min/mile, which you can sustain for 20 miles.
Whatever you're speed, if you run the full potential it makes you better/stronger/faster/longer,...etc.
So, there is a difference between "under-running/taking it easy" versus making the most of that pace.
Did you run the "slow run" for 10,15,20 miles? To the point where you must slow down or can't continue?

I’ve been in the habit of finishing my easy runs with a bit of tempo or stride pace for the last fraction of a km. This might usually just be the last 400m. Don’t know whether this is good practice but at my age it’s both reassuring and fun to know I have some ability to turn on the twitch muscles.
It gets me well into zone 4, that’s after about an hour to 90 minutes of zone 2 running. It’s not like going out of the blocks, an explosion of effort, like a sprinter (I can’t risk that nowadays); more like a gradual steady acceleration from zone 2. It keeps me enthusiastic, puts a smile on the old face during cool down.

Question. My watch tells me I'm in zone 3-4 but my breathing and body is in conversational zone(2) which should I follow. I often would stop running because my watch would tell me I'm in the higher zone. I'm 43 and just started running last year. Most of my runs are slow runs. Suffered a few injuries too.I'm now integrating swimming in my workouts. It's not for races but mainly to keep myself fit.

In short race like 100 to 200 m I have no match but in long race like 400 m My speed becomes constant nd i can't accelerate anymore...what to do?😔😔

I'm just jogging for the aerobic strength at a pace that for short runs, there's no tiredness, but at longer distances like 1 kilometer, it's a little tiring. Is it correct, or do I need to change?

Running doesn’t give me anything but lung capacity. It’s just a show up on how I worked on my legs at the gym 😂

I thought that the gym would help me with roadwork.
      Nice, cosy environment.
Big shock when I got out road running.
You need to get away from the gym,, if you want to run well.

I only found out I have a place for London a few weeks ago... I had just started a base phase with a view to doing some longer (marathon and maybe ultra) races this year, but had to shift to marathon training. It's a shame I didn't have more time!
