Happy New Year! There's a lot more to explore here. For example, the coefficient of restitution! If you work for the MLB and would consider letting me in on some baseball science I'd be game. P.S. Besides the obvious answer of Cal Ripken Jr., who was your favorite baseball player as a kid?
Also, thank you to everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I really appreciate it. www.patreon.com/smartereveryday

In '61 or '62, Frank Howard was reputed to have hit a 602 ft home run in County Stadium, Milwaukee. Vin Scully recounted his call of the "Shot heard round the world" a few times...I was lucky enough to have heard it...a mesmerizing story. The homer was later revised down to around 560'. Howard never swung hard at a pitch, but this knuckleball so badly fooled him, he literally swung with his left arm only, having let go of the bat with his right arm. Bless the memory of Frank Howard, my boyhood Dodgers hero.

He was a mechanical engineer; but he passed away before we could do anything. After watching the video, I’m now wondering about the safety concerns.
Side note: in college I was an equipment manager for our baseball team and a major bat company had asked us to test out new bats trying to replace aluminum, but they kept breaking.
Second side note: the surgeon who performed my spinal fusion did it robotically and before he became a surgeon, he was an engineer who worked on the SR71 engines.
