i think of this every time klimt is credited as a reference in fashion so I just want to add that many of the garments in his paintings are based on real clothes made by the designer Emilie Floge, and you can see what they looked like in photos and in surviving museum pieces (and in his paintings of her). i think she deserves some of the credit that he gets :)
I always like vampires costumed in a modern vibe with touches of past fashion. I mean, if I were an immortal being who had already lived for centuries, I would definitely wear my favorite 1790's velvet coat with a pair of ripped jeans & a Nirvana tee in the 1990's.
right!! i love all of the luxury but i feel like there’s no trend for over the top costuming across cinema at the moment - it’s all much more minimal. Bring back the glamps 🥲
@@rachellydiabInterview with the Vampire is a current series on AMC and season one had excellent costumes and they are going Paris in season two with flashbacks to the 1700s so I’d say check that out - also it’s an excellent show
@@geminihexx9858Yes I’ve seen and love AMC’s Interview! I still think it has amazing costumes- but as fantastic as it is i’d put it more in the period-accurate/blending in category compared to the 90s movie. Working on this video has got me so hyped for season two !!
A scene that I love is in the film 'What we do in the shadows', since they are all vampires they cant see their outfits in the mirror and have to give eachother advice in what looks good. Since the vampires are all different ages varying by hundreds of years, this results in some great (and hilarious) outfits as well as them taking more modern clothes from their victims. So worth a watch and my fave vamp media
Nadia's incredible clothing & her wardrobe's progression in What We Do In The Shadows is one of my favorite things to look at when I watch the show. I feel like it's so rich in humor, storyline and dialogue that the visuals (including wardrobe, FX makeup and effects) feel like the luscious frosting on top of a deliciously rich & curiously light, cake. Just such a great show and one of the very, very few I love that has come out in the last 10 years or so.
Also why vampires in film always look out of place in terms of their fashion i think is because they cant simple shop around for clothes as they closed at night when they are awake, makes sense why their outfits are sometimes are few decades off which i never really considered why before
"So, do you always wear velvets and fur coats to try and mimic the warmth that you no longer have as a walking corpse?" "What?! No! I literally have no active pain receptors. Winter is just the only time where it's dark enough out during business hours so I'm able to shop."
The Cell amazed me visually even before I realized it was her work, and I feel the film is incredibly undervalued in general. She makes that film decadent for the eye and I often wish it could be more appreciated.
I kept mistaking that Radiohead poster for a digital photo reference added in post...I was like, okay when are you gonna talk about the grungy vampires in the picture. And it was just Thom Yorke.
Queen of the damned outfits is so iconic. The heavily nu-metal and grunge in a vampire aesthetics lives constantly in my head. They are so cool vampire coded
The actor for Lestat took heavy inspiration from the alt. Underground industrial club scene. He went to some goth clubs in the U.K with Anne Rice and her crew to see how to get inspiration to bring the character together.
31:33 the new Interview with the Vampire TV show had excellent costumes and even references Lucy’s wedding gown with Lestat in drag during Mardi Gras! 🎉❤
Yes! A remake that is actually good and has a unique vision. And Storyville era NoLa is one of my favorite historical times & places. And the teenage Lucy does an impressive job, which had to be intimidating; as Kirsten Dunst was so iconic in her portrayal of Lucy.
I knew that outfit reminded me of something. Now that I think about it, I think that him biting into the fake baby with the blood confetti going everywhere was also a reference to Lucy's character in Bram Stokers Dracula.
Thank you so much for including Aaliyah as Akasha in your video! Out of all female vampires, I think that hers was the most seductive and utilitarian! I honestly don't think that the vampire trope gets explored enough in the cinematic lens as culturally relevant and evolutionary. I've always thought that that the vampire should reflect a mesh of current and period style. That way it, would be a nod to the period of creation as well as the transformative and adaptability of the vampire (current but still locked into the past). THIS VIDEO WAS AMAZING!!
I love that you mentioned 'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night"! Super underrated in western cinema awareness. Slow pacing, but it's deliberate and atmospheric.
I applaud that every time you talk about a different vamp aesthetic your outfit changes this is cinema this is art *snaps in awe and appreciation* ❤️❤️❤️
i believe she stated that she was only taking about the costumes of vampire MOVIES near the beginning of the video (but tbh i was still rather disappointed to not see any buffy the vampire slayer rep myself lol)
my favorite vampire aesthetic will always be Drursilla and Spike form Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The perfect mixture of a victorian goth style and a cool punk vampire hahaha
Drusilla is such an enjoyable character and backstory, and was perfectly portrayed by Juliet Landau. 🕸A delicate Romani gypsy girl during the Victorian period is stalked by an evil vampire until she takes solace in the Catholic belief & sanctuary in a convent...the day she is set to become a nun she becomes a vampire. Driven to madness, she sings disconcerting & disturbing songs to her old fashioned, porcelain faced dolls in between receiving visions of the future and hunting humans as a vampire herself🥀 I mean, the melodrama is just mwah 💋
I’m surprised you omitted AMC’s Interview with the Vampire because I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else reference the 1920’s 30’s and 40’s the way they have in a vampire project. Season one’s costuming really stands out because Louis and Lestat are basically J. C. Leyendecker illustrations come life. I find that especially interesting because the show really leans into the queer themes of Anne Rice’s books and Leyendecker notoriously modeled his Arrow Collar man after his life long lover/ partner Charles beach. Lestat also wears an extravagant costume in the finale episode of season one that seems like a nod to the wedding gown in Coppola’s Dracula film. It’s very drag, I loved it. Louis and Claudia also wear costumes that complement Lestat’s.
HOT TAKE: vampire costuming includes the extremes of opulence and subcultural references, bc it’s an easy way to show the audience “this character is isolated from society either by choice or necessity”. Whether the character is one or the other is determined by how rich (“above it all”) vs poor/rebellious (“separate from it all”) they are. I’m so excited to see the rest of your videos!!
Nosfuratu is also referenced in a comedy tv show “What we do in the shadows”. First a film than a series about vampires. I highly recommend. It has The Office humor ❤❤❤
I'd like to add on to your collar/neck thing at the beginning of your essay, that it makes sense from a design perspective! As humans, we subconsciously look for information/social cues in hands and faces. By having a big design element in the costuming near the head it helps draw the viewer's gaze to the focal point of the face and keep them there to then engage with the actor's emotive performance in addition to all the potential for metaphor like you mentioned (the vulnerability of the neck and desire to protect it, etc.). Awesome video, really fun to watch! Loved all your different outfits for each group too.
I frequent goth clubs and I can tell you the classic Drac look is still alive and thriving alongside the 80s punk/trad goth look, leather fetish gear and Victorian inspired gowns. 🧛♀️
don’t get me wrong I’m stoked it’s still thriving in sub-culture nightlife!! Just meant you wouldn’t see someone dressed in a tux at a regular shmegular club
Ahh love this! A new vampire film came out from Quebec last year called Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (lol) and it really had some fun fashion moments. The main vamp has sleek long black hair with blunt bangs and wears a poofy vintage fur hat with a black turtleneck. I think the movement of the long black hair tracks a lot with vampires preternaturally milling about in the shadows in literature and cinema!! But also fur is such an interesting fashion choice because it feels so prehistoric, a textile that immediately binds a character to the natural world!! Esp in a cold Canadian climate!! Anyways good job, subbed!!
Hello! Yess, it's only brief but I actually do mention Humanist Vampire at the end - thought the costume did a really lovely job a nodding to vampire history and yet keeping them believably stylish. Thank you for watching ♥
You asked for examples of sexy lady vampires and one that comes to mind is Carmilla from Vampire Hunter D although it is a Japanese anime, so a change of media.
Does 1970s The Vampire Lovers count? It's a Carmilla retelling and as per the 70s, so many bare breasts 😅 but generally it's more of period costuming, glam-esque
hello 🌹🌹 I’m so excited by the amazing response to this video - thank u so much to everyone who’s watched, commented and supported! It’s brought a lot of growth to my channel which is incredible. Means the world to me xx
You're not talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer! she has iconic costumes. I love Spike's style, his long leather jacket, silver hair, black painted nails and the prosthetics on his face when he turns into a vampire! very sexy 🤣
Fashion was suchhh a part of Buffy! That scene in the first ep where she spots a vamp not via her slayer powers but because his outfit was out of date and ugly!
It’s interesting to track vampire costuming with their role in media/culture - from monster of the night to sympathetic love interest, and something in between 🤔 love this video!!!
This video was everything! I’ve been such a vampire girl my whole life and it’s mostly been due to the costuming and the way their looks directly translated on screen their mystery and sexuality. You’ve encompassed that and more all within this video. Plus you brought so much nostalgia to this Millenials oldie heart! So glad I found your channel in the dead of night while scrolling!
I feel sexy vampire is orientalism: from Stoker's novel we can infer how the vampire is in itself the fear of the results of ~industrialisation~globalization~...a fear of a culture that is not the colonial England where the sun never sets (nor rises)...the same time period where orientalism was at its momentum. The fetishization of the "oriental" woman plays into the femme fatale trope...mysterious,dark,exotic and alluring though frightening because she's uncanny, woman...mix it all and we get a 2000s orientalism revival sexy vamp.
I mean, all of Theda Bara’s marketing was orientalism 101, and that wasn’t exactly cutting edge even in the 1910s, having already become a stereotypical trope in vaudeville well before making its way to cinema 🤷🏻♀️
Girl I hope you get big, like BIG big. Your ethical approach to opinion giving already is so fresh; citing sources, fun evidence and your sweet, fun (purely real) personality kept me watching even though its vampire hours and i should be asleep. KEEP IT UP!!!!!!
I had never seen underworld and really wasn't aware that it was such a significant movie until after I made this! But yes I think I'd throw them in cool vamps, got that berlin look hahah.

Preface this as a 40-something GenX, who grew up with horror movies playing often on my VCR... Sexy lady vampire- Grace Jones as "Katrina" in Vamp... it's so 80's camp, but Grace is undeniable. Also, Gary Oldman as Dracula was a bit of an awakening for me as a young teen. He's my favorite Dracula. Oh, and shout-out to Chris Sarandon's sexy "Jerry Dandridge" in Fright Night. Delicious. 💚
Yes I only learnt about Vamp through the comments on this video, but the costumes look incredible! I think Gary is a very justified vampire crush hahah. He's still got it (-:
Loved the subject matter. I've been obsessed with both vampires and costumes most of my life. Interview with a Vampire was the reason I started studying costume design.
Referencing your Vanessa Redgrave costume from The Devils: Don't stop doing such things. Flying too close to the sun with our interests like that does open us to ridicule. But the day you meet a person who appreciates this part of you (or hell, even, incredibly, RECOGNIZES your niche costumes) is the day you either make a friend for life or the love of your life. That is how I met my best friend. It's 22 years this year we have been friends. We met at a Halloween party. I saw her costume and was very interested, I got closer and started examining the details and really looking at her and she was looking at me and smiling. I said, "Can I guess?" She said, sure. "Mrs. Havisham", I said, like 90% sure. She was astonished. She was like, "omg, NOBODY KNEW. They thought I was just a Zombie bride or some crap...omg what did I do with the book?!" 😂 She had been carrying a properly antique looking copy of Great Expectations "to help explain." We literally spent the rest of the night getting drunk and looking for the damned book 😂 She was overjoyed I had known. But it wasn't that hard for me, bc I ALSO loved that character from that very book. We were meant to be friends ❤ and we might never have known each other if I wasn't attracted to her interesting niche costume. And for the record - you looked FCKING AMAZING. Never stop! P.S. I adore this video and your looks in it (esp that light pink vintage dress in the beginning and your leopard print coat). Thank you SO MUCH for talking about Ishioka, she is an often not mentioned but INTEGRAL part of why that film is so loved and enjoyed even today. I held off watching for a while bc I wanted to give this vid my full attention. I subbed to your channel recently and I'm so glad I did. 🌹
another example of modern contemporary vampires (beside twilight) is Vamps! it’s very 2000s but it’s pretty interesting seeing the two girls try to assimilate
Not the late baseball game with the boyfriend's family😂😂😂 Also, all the different Dracula musicals go HAM on fashion, if any of you miss the glampire era, highly recommend!
@@rachellydiab there's more than one french version, lol 🤣 I also saw a couple of snippets of Korean Dracula musical, and the main man is very much K-pop version of Lestat with some blood red hair, that was fun!
Eiko was the GOAT!! She also costumed The Cell and The Fall. The storylines are ok but the costumes are drop dead gorgeous. You can see Dracula’s armor mirrored in the dream suits they use in The Cell
I love history of fashion and creatures vids. I watched a vid on how vampires are turned using actual scietofic reasoning it was so good😭 so glad i can add to my collection of vids about the history of vampirism
Fantastic video essay. Super cool. One thing I would like to say is at a fan of Vampire the Masquerade (and the World of Darkness as a whole), a lot of the Video Games in the series have really interesting vampire designs, particularly Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and Shadows over New York. Bloodlines range from the classic to the modern (at the time, the game does take place in 2004), with clear influence with the more Punk vampires of Lost Boys (My personal fav). In the early part of the game, you are introduced to two influential vampires, Jeanette and Therese, and it's really inventive how they use their design to tell their story. Jeanette almost has a Harley Quinn aesthetic (which falls into the 90's aesthetic), while Therese is a very well-put-together businesswoman, despite the fact both co-own the same vampire club. Moreover, all the playable clans have their own style, ranging from the conventional to the glam to just plain weird (seriously, some of the Malk outfits are really fun.) Meanwhile, Shadows over New York is a visual novel following the newly embraced Lasombra named Julia. This one is much more modern, but it's really interesting cause you get to see Julia's transformation. In life, her outfits are awkward, and her suit doesn't quite fit. Meanwhile the transition in her outfit alone... well... I don't want to ruin it but it is truly something. Not to mention the giant silver crucifix she wears is a nice touch to the way the Lasombra clan has controlled the Catholic Church throughout history (Or at least tried to control it, the Society of St. Leopold have constantly butted heads.).
Hi!! This is coool - I'm not a video game person at all to be honest but this was really interesting to compare! I do get tempted sometimes to get more involved in gaming because of the incredible lore and design in horror games... so maybe I'll see these for myself one day. Thank you for watching (-:
@@rachellydiab if you wanna see but not play check out the Play Throughs by Maven of the Eventide. Highly recommend. She's probably why the algo recommended you to me. 😅
Another iconic sexy lady vampire but also a cool vampire is Grace Jones in Vamp. You first encounter this vampire entourage with an albino vampire and this very lost boys-esque look but then you see Grace Jones in these otherworldly Mugler feeling looks. It does however play into what you mentioned regarding the fetishization of non-white women, in this case specifically black women, as the main characters encounter her character in a strip club where she performs.
Vampires are trying to hide the bite marks on their necks. It’s harder to identify them if the puncture is not on display. That’s why the high neckline is popular🤓
This video has really reminded me of my love for the the vampire "genre". Bram Stoker's Dracula, Blade, The Lost Boys are all staples for me and it's nice to focus on the fashion of these movies because the fashion is always so captivating, vampires are either cool or fanciful in a way you wish to achieve.

Potentially the sexy vamp? she was more TV but you had also mentioned American Horror Story. I also think Grace Jone’s vampire exotic dancer in Vamp (86) would be a great addition to the sexy vamp list. Cheers!

Recently, I've been obsessed with vampires, and it's funny because I grew up watching The Vampire Diaries, but it wasn't until 2020 that I discovered Interview With the Vampire. I fell in love with the books, the movie and now the new show. I feel like the series is just perfect, and I'm obsessed with Lestat.
Loved this video so much!! Definitely inspired to rewatch all the movies I’ve seen and check out the ones I haven’t! One thought re: the sexy lady vampire archetype-although she’s technically not a vampire I think Isabella Rossellini’s character in “Death Becomes Her” definitely draws some inspo from the sexy lady and glampire stylings!
Some recent very good on screen vampires that i believe escaped this video essay that i encourage people to check out are "el conde" and "midnight mass" both found on netflix
love this video and as a big vampire books nerd i just wanted to add some bonus literary context for anyone interested so here goes!! a lot of these depictions of glamorous and sexy vampires (and even the more blending-in ones!) owe it all to anne rice's writing and with _interview with the vampire_ being published in 1976, a new image of vampires emerged and influenced pop culture : beautiful and romantic, sensual, individual beings, torn by human emotions and thus unlike the previous depiction of vampires seen as impious monsters. the character of Lestat in particular being this iconic bratty, campy, extravagant, insufferable and megalomaniac, bisexual mess, definitely set a precedent in vampire pop culture and literature!! (think about it, your fav whiny gay vampires i.e. BG3 astarion would not exist without lestat being written by rice in the 70's!). It for sure influenced the more glam fashion and overall image of vampires, and in 1985 the sequel _the vampire lestat_ , in which we get an 80's glam rock superstar Lestat, came out (as well _the lost boys'_ script getting acquired by production, a movie that was partly inspired by iwtv) and that for sure set the tone again for more leathery rock-y vampires! and i can't talk about sweaty new orleans gay vampires without mentioning brite's _lost souls_ (published 1992, based on earlier novella by brite from 1987-8) and his splatterpunk, grungy, dirty, decadent and gay vampire characters, which certainly had less influence (it's an iconic but tough horror read, ngl) but still fed the vampire mythology with a more "not-really-humans-not-really-monsters", modern, tortured and complex individuals approach, and added a more grunge aesthetic to the mix. anyways thanks for your work!!! (if anyone wants to correct or add to this you're more than welcome!)
I want to say first i that I love your whole analysis on the Vampire costume work and how it reflects each time period over the years. As you know, I'm a huge fan of Vampires. But the thing that truly fascinates me about them is that Vampires are the only monster that is uniquely human and most of it is reflected in their costume-work as well as character design. The Vampire took many incarnations depending on the times. In Stoker's time, Dracula's vampires was really the embodiment of England's irrational & prejudiced fear of Eastern European Immigrants and Women disobeying Victorian standards (ex: Dracula and Lucy). This is why I loved Coppola's Dracula because thanks to Eiko Ishioka's costume design, she gave us a unique take on Dracula that feels very Supernatural and ethereal. Later with Anne Rice and the 80's, the Vampires became an analysis for LGBT coded characters who had to suffer during the AIDs epidemic. 2000's Vampires became more sexually heightened, but it still continued Stoker's "orientalist" tone in making Vampires seem exotically mysterious. Until today with successes like "True Blood", "Let the Right One In" and so many current shows after that, Vampires became more human and relatable, which is following Anne Rice's depictions. This is also why I love the new "Interview With the Vampire" show because it pays respect to Anne Rice's writing but allows her characters to be organic and real. This is a great analysis video by the way!
I remember watching the Lost Boys as a child and I think those costumes have remained an influence on my style to the day, I thought they were so cool.
Don’t forget FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) - Chris Sarandon’s vampire, Jerry Dandrige, had a distinctly classical men’s style! Even Evil Ed had a style, too, once he was turned.
loved this video, made me subscribe and watch a few of your other videos. but, i was really hoping you would cover the costuming in what we do in the shadows -- both the film and the series, and also the newer interview with the vampire series.
Thank you! For sure, there are just so so many movies out there that I can’t include everything. For what it’s worth I recently watches the new interview with the vampire series and thought it was absolutely incredible ✨✨✨
Also the vampire women in Bram Stoker's Dracula are the epitomy of sexy lady vampire, and I think their costumes were the inspiration for Aaliyah's in Queen of the Damned as well as the female vampire trio in Van Helsing.
I definitely think they inspired the Van Helsing brides! But that's actually why I didn't include them in the sexy vampire category, bc I don't think that they're 'over-sexualised'... I think they're the epitome of the 'better costumed vampires' that other films rip-off hahah.
I really loved this video. It called to mind buffy the vampire slayer and The Strain as honorable mentions! But still fantastic job and your outfits were on point throughout of course
Loved every minute of this video, this is one of those niche topics that isn’t covered a whole lot! Films like The Lost Boys, Blade, and The Hunger not only get me into vampires as a kid but really helped develop my fashion/style sense - who knows, maybe I’m a vampire? 🧛♀️🤔😂
Damn, that's one spicy outro! 😂 gorgeous and fascinating discussion! I'm in love with so many of these aesthetics and I want them to come back (but not the heroin-chic bodies, please).
Love mid history vampires! So not so old school it’s like .. legit a dead man rising from the grave … but also not like … twilight vibes.. I love the middle ground of both! Old school classic vampire but also that added “they are beautiful and dress so nice “
This was fascinating to watch ! I never even thought about the 2000s sexy vampire ladies basically being the "exotic fetishization" trope... now it's so obvious! They definitely ate it up but it's a bit disturbing now that you've mentioned it. I was going to say that I hope you get to watch Interview with the Vampire (2022) but I see that you already answered another comment ahah. I'm so obsessed and I wish i found more people who spoke of its incredible costume design. Although I found a couple of articles on tumblr pointing out Lestat's wardrobe and it's similarity to Black men's wardrobe of that period and more .. Hopefully it'll be just as good for season 2! And if you're ever inspired to mention it in a video i'll be right there 🤭
Hey thank you for watching 🌹🌹 Yes it's soooo good. I probably won't be doing any videos on TV shows, but maybe by the time season 2 is out I'll change my mind!!
The fact that the new Interview with the Vampire show is missing from this but the disaster of Queen of the Damned is included is INSANE. The costuming on the IWTV show is STELLAR.
So excited to see A Girl Walks Alone at Night referenced. I saw it in a tiny arty cinema in Sydney Australia and the 100 or less seats weren't sold out at the session i went to.
You should watch AMC's newest TV series adaptation of Interview with the Vampire (released in 2022 and season 2 comes out in May!). While it has several changes from the books, it's still a sublime work that respects Anne Rice's vampires and lore. And of course, costume designer Carol Cutshal did a splendid job with the delicious and significant costumes of the series, which I think would fall in the glampire and blend-in vampire categories. In the final episode, Lestat even dresses in drag and his costume references both Marie Antoinette and Lucy from Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's INCREDIBLE!. Btw, great video! :)
this was a great video! loved it! i hope someday you do a version on vampire costumes in TV because there are so many great vampire shows with stellar costuming and i would love your takes on them too
If you love fashion and vampires and the overlap of fashion and vampires, I recommend a movie called Daughters of Darkness. It's from the 70s and is deeply glam.
Oh, and then there's its unofficial sequel, The Hunger, starring David Bowie and Susan Sarandon. The fashion isn't as iconic as the prequel's, but it's still interesting.
i think of this every time klimt is credited as a reference in fashion so I just want to add that many of the garments in his paintings are based on real clothes made by the designer Emilie Floge, and you can see what they looked like in photos and in surviving museum pieces (and in his paintings of her). i think she deserves some of the credit that he gets :)
i LUVVV when production puts half their budget into costuming and the designers put their whole vampussy into it!!!

I always like vampires costumed in a modern vibe with touches of past fashion. I mean, if I were an immortal being who had already lived for centuries, I would definitely wear my favorite 1790's velvet coat with a pair of ripped jeans & a Nirvana tee in the 1990's.
I love that description hahah - i feel like I could see u in the world of Only Lovers
There's a movie named Vamps starring Alicia Silverstone where her character does just that. And Wallace Shawn plays Van Helsing.

My thoughts exactly! ❤
I feel that too, like Dilara Findikoglu always comes to my mind!
I so dearly miss glampire movies like Bram Stoker's Dracula and Interview with the Vampire. They don't make movies like that anymore.

Also why vampires in film always look out of place in terms of their fashion i think is because they cant simple shop around for clothes as they closed at night when they are awake, makes sense why their outfits are sometimes are few decades off which i never really considered why before
Love this idea
"So, do you always wear velvets and fur coats to try and mimic the warmth that you no longer have as a walking corpse?"
"What?! No! I literally have no active pain receptors. Winter is just the only time where it's dark enough out during business hours so I'm able to shop."
Eiko Ishioka changed my life and I never even knew it until years and years later. She will never be topped for me.
Agreed, she shaped my idea of beauty and darkness. And my love of bold reds.
Yeah when I realised she also costumes The Cell I realised how much of an impact her work had had on me! Just incredible 🌹
@@rachellydiab mine was The Fall ❤️
The world is a poorer and less beautiful place since Eiko Ishioka died.
The Cell amazed me visually even before I realized it was her work, and I feel the film is incredibly undervalued in general. She makes that film decadent for the eye and I often wish it could be more appreciated.

The costuming in Bram Stoker's Dracula is chef kiss perfection
My all time favorite film. If im feeling down i will watch it on repeat!
The immortal genius of Eiko Ishioka ❤
I love that you mentioned 'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night"! Super underrated in western cinema awareness. Slow pacing, but it's deliberate and atmospheric.
I applaud that every time you talk about a different vamp aesthetic your outfit changes this is cinema this is art
*snaps in awe and appreciation* ❤️❤️❤️
thank you hahaha
the lack of what we do in the shadows rep was criminal, but not enough people talk about the only lovers left alive so its forgivable :)
i believe she stated that she was only taking about the costumes of vampire MOVIES near the beginning of the video (but tbh i was still rather disappointed to not see any buffy the vampire slayer rep myself lol)
@@darkangel4994 WWDITS is a vampire movie...
@@darkangel4994WWDITS was actually a film first :)
i looooved the costumes in interview with a vampire- and surprisingly the what we do in the shadows series also had some really excellent costumes
What we do in the shadows almost made it into the video!
Vladislav's look for the masquerade is so cool and dramatic 😅
flamboyant chic
Vivienne Westwood's clothing was used to dress Nadia in later seasons ❤
my favorite vampire aesthetic will always be Drursilla and Spike form Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Louis and Claudia also wear costumes that complement Lestat’s.
thank u! i was waiting for this the whole time
HOT TAKE: vampire costuming includes the extremes of opulence and subcultural references, bc it’s an easy way to show the audience “this character is isolated from society either by choice or necessity”.
It has The Office humor ❤❤❤
the movie Vamp is a good glampire example! the 80s tastic use of keith harring body paint is so beautiful
Grace's Katrina is everything!!!
I am so happy that Only Lovers Left Alive was included here because far too few people know of it but it is such a good movie
Isn’t it brilliant!
Just meant you wouldn’t see someone dressed in a tux at a regular shmegular club
your energy and freedom is addictive. i love this.
Aaah thank u!!!
Absolutely adore vampiric fashion! Also love the way witches are designed as well throughout media!
I LOVED this movie. It was so sweet!!
I just love the vampire fashion. It’s so amazing like Victorian and I love the interview with the vampire costuming and I think even in the TV show
Love that you included Aaliyah's Akasha in the thumbnail
Eiko Ishioka's costumes are pure art!
You asked for examples of sexy lady vampires and one that comes to mind is Carmilla from Vampire Hunter D although it is a Japanese anime, so a change of media.
A few people have said this! I'll check it out (-:
The ladies in the Castlevania Series also fit the mold
Does 1970s The Vampire Lovers count? It's a Carmilla retelling and as per the 70s, so many bare breasts 😅 but generally it's more of period costuming, glam-esque
The Hunger. Catherine Deneauve. Full stop. Oh, and Bauhaus as an opening act rocked.
hello 🌹🌹 I’m so excited by the amazing response to this video - thank u so much to everyone who’s watched, commented and supported! It’s brought a lot of growth to my channel which is incredible.
Means the world to me xx
You're not talking about Buffy the Vampire Slayer! she has iconic costumes.
I love Spike's style, his long leather jacket, silver hair, black painted nails and the prosthetics on his face when he turns into a vampire! very sexy 🤣
She's only talking about films, but you are 100% right.
True! Buffy made the sporty cheerleading outfit goth!
@@hannahprice8984she deffinately mentioned some miniseries in there...
To be fair though Spike is a clear send up of Lost Boys, and Angel is "I wanna fit in".
Darla and Dru on the other hand... more interesting.
Such an evolution right!! And thank you ❤️❤️
This video was everything!
Hey thank you so much for watching, glad you enjoyed 💜💜 such a lovely comment
I feel sexy vampire is orientalism: from Stoker's novel we can infer how the vampire is in itself the fear of the results of ~industrialisation~globalization~...a fear of a culture that is not the colonial England where the sun never sets (nor rises)...the same time period where orientalism was at its momentum. The fetishization of the "oriental" woman plays into the femme fatale trope...mysterious,dark,exotic and alluring though frightening because she's uncanny, woman...mix it all and we get a 2000s orientalism revival sexy vamp.
oh for sure! vampires in asia are beautiful women but not to the point theyre seggsualized. They more of smth to be wary of~
Reaching.
Yes, that and the fact that Vampires give the Best Hickeys 🤤
I mean, all of Theda Bara’s marketing was orientalism 101, and that wasn’t exactly cutting edge even in the 1910s, having already become a stereotypical trope in vaudeville well before making its way to cinema 🤷🏻♀️
Girl I hope you get big, like BIG big. Your ethical approach to opinion giving already is so fresh; citing sources, fun evidence and your sweet, fun (purely real) personality kept me watching even though its vampire hours and i should be asleep. KEEP IT UP!!!!!!
Ur so lovely thank u!!! ❤️
Thank you for reigniting my obsession with vampires!!! Stunning video
If you did do vampires on tv next, the dive into true blood would be scrumptious
I loved the vampire costume designs of Underworld and was surprised this movie wasn't included. They are cool, glam and sexy. Great vid.
I had never seen underworld and really wasn't aware that it was such a significant movie until after I made this! But yes I think I'd throw them in cool vamps, got that berlin look hahah.

The Dracula 4:48
The Cool Vamps 9:50

Side note: the outfit changes help to distinguish each section when scrubbing through the video, and I think that’s really neat!
I was in high school when underworld came out and the combo of sexy vampire, glampire and cool vampire has officially cemented into my brain.
This is so cute!!! Thank u for being here ❤️❤️
another example of modern contemporary vampires (beside twilight) is Vamps! it’s very 2000s but it’s pretty interesting seeing the two girls try to assimilate
ooooooh I would love to see your take on pirate costume design ❤
Cool idea, will put it on the list!
Not the late baseball game with the boyfriend's family😂😂😂
Also, all the different Dracula musicals go HAM on fashion, if any of you miss the glampire era, highly recommend!
omg yes this has just reminded me that when I was a teenager I saw this crazy French Dracula musical!!!! That was buried deep hahhaha
Moreover, all the playable clans have their own style, ranging from the conventional to the glam to just plain weird (seriously, some of the Malk outfits are really fun.)
Meanwhile, Shadows over New York is a visual novel following the newly embraced Lasombra named Julia.
Yassss I loved this, I’m obsessed with Lucy westerna and this was titillating🧛🏻♂️
Thank you!! I just watched your Lucy video - such good stuff! You speak so eloquently 😍
@@rachellydiab thank you love ❤️ I hope to see more from you soon x
Vampires are trying to hide the bite marks on their necks. It’s harder to identify them if the puncture is not on display. That’s why the high neckline is popular🤓
I love both the glampire and the cool vampire aesthetic. The Lost Boys, and Interview with a Vampire are my favourites!

i was confused for a whole minute thinking the radiohead poster was a vampire fashion example 😭😭😭😭lmaooo

I’d be curious about where you would put Vampira from the 70s in these categories. Potentially the sexy vamp? she was more TV but you had also mentioned American Horror Story.
I also think Grace Jone’s vampire exotic dancer in Vamp (86) would be a great addition to the sexy vamp list. Cheers!
Similar to Akasha's costuming was the costuming of Grace Jones in the movie vamp (1986).
6:27 DR CALIGARI MENTIONED!!! honestly, the more i get into horror the more i realize it isn’t as obscure as i thought but still great to see it mentioned. I loved it
Recently, I've been obsessed with vampires, and it's funny because I grew up watching The Vampire Diaries, but it wasn't until 2020 that I discovered Interview With the Vampire. I fell in love with the books, the movie and now the new show. I feel like the series is just perfect, and I'm obsessed with Lestat.
Was sooo hoping you would mention a Girl Walks Home and BRILLIANT… you did! ❤🧛♀️
El Conde was captivating!
loved this!! i’m dressing up for halloween as a victorian/historical glampire esque vamp and i’m so excited!! so this was perfect to watch this week
love this video and as a big vampire books nerd i just wanted to add some bonus literary context for anyone interested so here goes!!
a lot of these depictions of glamorous and sexy vampires (and even the more blending-in ones!) owe it all to anne rice's writing and with _interview with the vampire_ being published in 1976, a new image of vampires emerged and influenced pop culture : beautiful and romantic, sensual, individual beings, torn by human emotions and thus unlike the previous depiction of vampires seen as impious monsters. the character of Lestat in particular being this iconic bratty, campy, extravagant, insufferable and megalomaniac, bisexual mess, definitely set a precedent in vampire pop culture and literature!! (if anyone wants to correct or add to this you're more than welcome!)
fav nosferatu-esque vampire is petyr from the what we do in the shadows movie i just think he’s neat
This is a great analysis video by the way!
i loved the clothes in the Dark Shadows movie including wardrobe for the werewolf
id love to see your thoughts on the fashions of twilight and of the many frankenstein creatures in cinema !!!!
I remember watching the Lost Boys as a child and I think those costumes have remained an influence on my style to the day, I thought they were so cool.
I work as a professional in wardrobe for theatre, and Im SOOOO HAPPY I've found your channel ❤❤❤
Absolutely love how in dept all of your analyses are.
So happy I found your channel definitely a new favorite of mine!
such a kind comment, thank you ❤️❤️
Also the vampire women in Bram Stoker's Dracula are the epitomy of sexy lady vampire, and I think their costumes were the inspiration for Aaliyah's in Queen of the Damned as well as the female vampire trio in Van Helsing.
I definitely think they inspired the Van Helsing brides! But that's actually why I didn't include them in the sexy vampire category, bc I don't think that they're 'over-sexualised'... I think they're the epitome of the 'better costumed vampires' that other films rip-off hahah.
The most stylish vampires right now are Louis and Lestat from AMC's "Interview with the Vampire" series! Marvelous costume design !!!!
Loved this so much! New to your channel but would love more horror fashion videos 🔪🩸💃🏼
Thank you!! I’ll definitely be continuing the series 🌹🌹
I really loved this video. It called to mind buffy the vampire slayer and The Strain as honorable mentions! But still fantastic job and your outfits were on point throughout of course
Hey great video, but you forgot Grace Jones in “Vamp”
Loved this. Vampire fashion finds itself in my wardrobe all the time and it brings me back to being a teen. It's chic
Forever chic!!
The fact that the new Interview with the Vampire show is missing from this but the disaster of Queen of the Damned is included is INSANE. The costuming on the IWTV show is STELLAR.
Very informative video thank you! Just a thought, you could include the outfits from Buffy the vampire slayer and from What we do in the shadows!
So excited to see A Girl Walks Alone at Night referenced. I saw it in a tiny arty cinema in Sydney Australia and the 100 or less seats weren't sold out at the session i went to.
I absolutey adored this video, though I was so dissappinted to see no mention of Underworld in the cool section
Vampires are such iconic creatures of the night ya know, I am stoked
0:27 "mom... your scaring me" lmao 😭
this was a great video! loved it! i hope someday you do a version on vampire costumes in TV because there are so many great vampire shows with stellar costuming and i would love your takes on them too
Love this! Your channel is quickly becoming a favorite!
Thank you so much!! So kind ✨✨✨
Oh, you mentioned The Hunger! Good job, people don't talk about it enough!
But, like I said, the fashion is waaaay better in Daughters of Darkness.
