That adds to both the process of learning and the satire that it's to shock people of what Ireland was suffering from. (while this is highly exaggerated)
I was confused for a good few minutes until this dude starts saying "Hey these one year old babies will make a mean roast!" and then I was like oHH NONONONONO
@@Dr.Vantas I just thought that for your college class you had to do questions or essays based on this satire I just thought you could send it to me I have to do an essay about this :(
He shows the absolute necessity of his numerous previous points (before this essay) by pointing out the dastardly absurdity of the alternative possibilities! I don't think I've used that many fancy words in one sentence before. 😉
This is so helpful! I'm an English major and this is my 3rd time reading this. Sometimes my eyes begin to bleed and I turn to audiobooks. What inspired you to record "A Modest Proposal"?
+Mary Maggiore I'm not entirely sure. I have always liked this particular piece of satire, and I wanted to record something that hadn't been done countless times by people with better voices than me (like many of the classics have). I'm glad you found it helpful!
In those days, Pissing off the King was very dangerous, and Swift was so infuriated by the English treatment of the Irish, that he risked jail to express his outrage. A very Brave Man, Jonathan Swift. Thank You for putting the work in. Good Luck.
Too prescient - nothing is more grotesque or insufferable than the false consciousness of the bourgeoisie and this is a scathing indictment of it that is timeless.
I got so lost in the narrative of this for a minute that I thought I was listening to Welcome to Nightvale, and I had to kinda stop myself and remember that this was written by a man in the 1700s who wrote an entire essay just to troll people.
I remember reading this in high school English class in the 60's. I bet that PUBLIC SCHOOLS didn't teach it, but the Irish provided most nuns and brothers teaching Catholic schools in the U.S. Sr. told us that Swift wrote this as a satire, and that he was horrified when a bill to this effect was introduced and debated seriously in Parliament. Publishing this NOW is timely for 2 reasons: 1) Many Americans now have a similar horror of Latin American immigrants, and pen them in filthy cages, much like our chicken factories. The U.S. has claimed and exercised with force the right to meddle in Latin American politics. That has caused much of the misery Latin Americans now flee. (Google "Monroe Doctrine" and "United Fruit and US Marines") 2) English xenophobia has increased as England's capacity to invade and profitably subjugate other nations has declined. Since they want all the benefits of EU membership without any of the costs or obligations of EU membership, and voters believed that possible, England voted for Brexit from the EU. Brexit will force customs checks to collect taxes and prevent smuggling along the very long border dividing Ireland. Such a border violates the Good Friday Agreement, the international treaty which brought peace after 30 years of uprisings in Northern Ireland and along the border. The "Protestant" portion of NI's population is aging rapidly and dwindling. The people of NI have a right in law to hold referendum to vote on reunification of Ireland, and demographics would make a united, secular Ireland a fact by 2040. The miserable prospects of Brexit and renewed strife are persuading many Protestants to favor unifying Ireland. Swift's satire is probably suppressed in schools and libraries in the U.K. Under Thatcher's TERRORISM ACT, merely singing many Irish follksongs could get you arrested and held incommunicado indefinitely. After 800 years, it's time to end England's first colonial occupation. I hear that Scotland also wants to remain in the EU. That will allow the English to keep themselves 8n splendid isolation.
@@milliemartin6490 I'm glad you were taught that. Public school curricula seem to have become somewhat more honest than when I was in school ('50s and '60s).
This must have been the inspiration for a Blackadder Season 3 joke about the poor oppressed masses having children as a cheap alternative to turkey for Christmas.
Yes it was was a satirical homage to Swift who was the Stephen Colbert, J.K. Rowling, and Charles Dickens of his day. BTW, after executing one king in England and another in France, people got braver.
I just reread the modest proposal and came upon this. Your narration is rushed in the beginning and I hear you almost stumble few times. Otherwise this is most welcome.
When you're doing this for school, but you're a competitive fortnite player and you just want to play fortnite. Omg, it didn't exist when this came out. Neither did competitive gaming omg.
It's interesting to listen to this without first knowing what it's about.

Your voice sounds wonderful on this recording.
Idk if that's a compliment 😂
I want to be this convincing jeez
In one fell swoop, Swift nails the upper class, the lower class, and the Catholic Church. A 1729 trifecta.😎
the best audio , nice and clear ...thanks ❤👌

I must thank you for making this. It made my school assignment so much easier, but GOD DAMN do I hate this essay.
Thank you for this helped me a lot
You could slow down a bit but your voice is very good and you do understand inflection.
Thank You for this recording; perhaps You can do Twain's "Letters from Earth." Oh, yes, or parts of Byron's "Don Juan," Pope's "The Rape of the lock."

I think you read a bit fast and thereby lose some of the "oddity" of the text. The irony of the work needs pauses and time to sink in...

I cant believe there are people in this world who would want to major in English so they could read satires like these
This is the most disgusting thing I have ever read
The essay exposes a real problem of Swift's day. What's disgusting is that many people actually pondered the merits of his satirical argument.
