Gabi and Guillaume’s beautiful skate in #montpellier to Elégie by Gabriel Fauré 🥰 The home crowd was, to quote Jackie Wong, rambunctious - felt like a World Cup football match!
It’s still surreal to me that I got to see P/C perform in person, and so up close!
I tried sending them a letter before the Olympics but it didn’t make it, and skaters weren’t allowed to receive gifts at Worlds this year because of COVID. This is what I wrote:
Dear Gabi and Guillaume,
I just wanted to write ahead of the Olympics to wish you good luck, and to thank you for years of bringing forth such sublime beauty into the world. I barely knew ice dance before I watched your Moonlight Sonata; now I can scarce imagine life without it. When you skate, you not only skate to the music, but live it body and soul. The emotions are so palpable, yet the story infinitely interpretable. Every frame is a painting.
I admire that despite being at the top for years, you never seem to let it get to your head, and you never rest on your laurels. Your programs always feel true to yourselves yet experimental at the same time; even if I have doubts about a program at the beginning of the season, I end up being completely convinced by season’s end. I know that you will eventually retire, but I do hope, to paraphrase Lord of the Rings, that it is not this year.
I could write an essay full of superlatives, but it’s probably nothing you haven’t heard already. I’ve never written something like this before and I don’t want to come across as fawning, but your skating has redefined beauty for me! Je vous remercie pour tous.
