Just one thing!! Like in march I have to buy a new router because I didn't fount any video tha explain me how to hack my router WRT54G, and there's was many but not one was so clear and easy to instal the DD-WRT in my router!! Men you was so clear and explicit tha with my poor English I undesrstamd all you explain!! Thanks and the world need people like you!!!
I have used this device for a long time and I have always wanted to upgrade the firmware. I have watched a lot of vids on this procedure but yours is the most pertinent because it is exactly the same device as mine. Your step by step tutorial is excellent and easy for me (first time-er) to follow. Other information I see indicates that a similar firmware "Tomato" will also work for this router. Because of the clarity of your presentation I will probably be choosing DD-WRT. Thanks for your help.
I have watched 40 videos on this subject and yours is absolutely the best and easiest to understand. I can understand what you are saying because you speak clearly and stay on point. The video is clear to see also. Based on your presentation here, I would definitely hire you for your consulting services. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Hi Stephen, Thanks for this video. I watched quite a few other videos about installing DD-WRT, and your video is the most comprehensive. In fact, I was surprised that my installation went so smoothly, by simply following all of your directions. One small detail I can add: After the 30/30/30 reset, my Linksys v2.2 defaults to a username of "Linksys" instead of being blank on your router. Take care !
I do not agree with one other comment; your video does NOT present too much information. I am familiar with computers in general, but this is an unusual procedure, which I believe requires some explanation. I very much appreciated the detail that you presented here, as no other source described so clearly how the software was to be downloaded and installed. Also, I'm fairly certain that every user is not familiar with a 30/30/30 reset; at least I was not until very recently. Thank you again!
really appreciate this....forget the guys that say this is overkill....for someone who never even knew this kind of process existed, this was the easiest/most thorough video for me to follow
Love the detail on this video. I have upgraded a more recent Linksys router model with dd-wrt firmware but that was a few years back. Now that I want to do it again on an old WRT54G the dd-wrt wiki seems overwhelming in its minutae and seemingly contradictory information and guidance for flashing firmware. Hopefully I will be able to folllow your instructional video and get this device flashed successfully. Thanks Steve
@Bloodyfisted It depends. If the routers are set to the defaults, then not really, but it would probably not hurt to do so anyway, just in case. However, the router that I was using for the demonstration was one that I bought on Ebay and I wanted to make sure that it was completely back to factory defaults before proceeding to flash it with the firmware.
You caught that too. I was wondering the same thing, since I have a v4 with Tomato I want to re-flash with DD-WRT. I just installed micro on a v5 and it's great so far.
@mexicankid74 The NAT might be open with the factory default settings from this firmware, but it may also be a problem with your modem. There are a lot of tutorials on the internet and on RUclips for opening your NAT, so instead of buying a new router, you might want to just look up one of those to try to open it with your current network configuration.
Good job. Should even help users with limited knowledge of firmware work to get using the great stuff from DD-WRT. And by the way, the smart folks over at DD-WRT strongly encourage the 30/30/30. I think I like the advice of experts.
The builds on the DD-WRT router database shown in the vid are not recommended for flashing the WRT54G. Theres more info on recommended builds on the Peacock thread on the DD-WRT forum, or in the Wikis for different models.
@Muffin1700 Do you have the router connected to the computer and turned on? Try reviewing the steps I did closely to make sure that you follow them correctly.
i need to ask, is it possible to return to the original link sys firmware? i mean something like by hardware or the 30/30/30 hard reset? or once you install the DD-WRT firmware it takes all the control of the hardware? I want to work with my partner's WRT54G V8, could you give me any tip before! i don't want to mess it up, thanks![sorry for my English. SLP, MX]
There are two version of the firmware: dd-wrt.v24_micro_olsrd_generic.bin and dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin, which one should I use and what's their differences? Thanks!
I noticed that you opted to skip downloading and installing a generic build on the router first, before upgrading to the upgrade version you went with. The dd-wrt wiki generally recommends the initial flash before upgrading to a final version. Moreover, most guys I have seen do the initial flash as well. I just wonder why you skipped it and if that makes any difference in the success of the flashing or router operation.
@l3lackitty Sorry about the different volume levels. After I edited and uploaded the video I noticed that a couple of the clips were louder than others, but I was on a deadline and needed to submit the video so I didn't get a chance to fix it. Thanks for the constructive criticism though =)
Hey Stephen, I have a question, I don´t know whats wrong with my router, is the same as yours, when I turn it on, the only lights that are ON are the ´´power´´, ´´1´´, and ´´internet´´ one, the WLAN is off :s, when I conect the router to the computer it doesnt get online on the internet, I can´t get to the page ¨192.168.1.1¨ :( It doesn work :´( Im desesperate! Can you please help me, I don´t know what else to do
You might want to add a note or something that you need to do a FULL 30/30/30 reset after verifying that the dd-wrt flash was successful. I just bricked my router (same exact router as the one in the video). A power cycle isn't enough. It has something to with how information is stored in the Nvram during the flash. Total brick. Just a flashing power light and no ping. So mine is screwed but hopefully someone else can be helped.
kinetikx maybe this help you www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=45024 also for doing again the procedure check this other link secure.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=51486
Hay Man, I Meant no offense, Your Vid is awesome and full of information. My comment was pointed at the "Its ezer then these videos make it look" Point of view. And that may scare some people away from flashing new firmware. dd-wrt is awesome. thanks for the VID
@ManWithBigTittys Some people need a little more instruction and I did this tutorial for a class, so it had to be detailed. Sorry you didn't like the video.
I dont know what version number is but the firmware that is on the router is Firmware Version: v7.50.0, Jan. 16, 2007 is it possible to install custom firmware on that router or should i leave it to default.
@TheKingOfTechnology yes, this guy didnt do it and can run into complications down the road. Clearing the nvram might take doing the 30-30-30 more than once to get the nvram clear.
@518dan Tomato is a good firmware too. You can't really go wrong with either firmware. I prefer DD-WRT, but I know a lot of people who like Tomato better.
I'm having some issues. After updating the firmware on my wrt54gsv7 with dd wrt, non of the lights on my router light up. The only time a light will go on is when the Ethernet cable is plug. Before the upgrade all the correspond lights lite up. I'm also not able to go onto the web interface anymore. I'm afraid that I've my have bricked my router.
Hi there I have the same problem that you. After the upgrade any light work and there is not computer connection. Please can you tell me if you fixed your problem, I need any advice how to fix this.
30/30/30 reset not working for me.the powerrecyle procedure shows blnking power LED After that tried the tftp utility for firmware update not working for the same.....
thanks for the tutorial it works, please help me with the configuration of my router linksys wrt54v7, my adsl provider has installed a modem zhone1511 its in dhcp and my wrt54gs is in dhcp, and the cable rj45 from the zhone is going to the #1 port from the linksys not the internet port and its working but everytime we use internet it freez and reload and other time it conects, what should i do to get it working or set it just for wifi conection not wan.
Brandon tyson , did you get yours to work again . i have the same issue! not able to connect to router , NO HELP FROM ANYONE IN THE POST, suggest not doing it until someone responds
Great video. However, your router (the V2) is capable of using the standard build (which has more features). Why go with the micro then? Micro is for (unfortunate) people like me that are stuck with the V8 version. LOL.
This is not working. I found my router and there is nothing to download and the two zip drives in the lower half of the screen don't do anything. What gives?
i want to reset my router because i cant find my username and password to acess my linkys stuff and i type in no username and type in admin for password but doesnt work! where do i find my password and username? if i cant find it and i reset my router, will anything happen to the router?
+KEEVVY Tomato has a nicer and cleaner webui (love the bandwidth graphs), but DD-WRT got more advanced features (that you probably never gonna use). My personal favourite is Tomato.
Bark I was asking because I have tomato also I replace the antennas with ones from Cisco Aironet 1200 (Cisco AIR-ANT4941 Aironet 2.2dBi 2.4GHz Dipole Black Antenna) & I still have lower range than my old belkin f5d7230-4v7
V5 and V6 need special attention you need vx works killer first then upload dd-wrt go to their wiki and read up on the V5/V6 versions they are the worst versions to own. only micro dd-wrt fill fit on it. you're better off throwing that router in the trash and getting another one.
I would not call or hire this young grown ass man. He said. 30 sec 60sec 90 sec. NO DUDE its 1 min and 20 sec's. no such thing as 90 sec's only 6o secs

This is the best video showing how to upgrade to DD-WRT. Thank you for fast and simple.

You caught that too. I was wondering the same thing, since I have a v4 with Tomato I want to re-flash with DD-WRT. I just installed micro on a v5 and it's great so far.
Thanks, you solved a big issue in our household. Used wrt54g2 to cover the "blindspot".

Thank You Sir, Excellent tutorials for the beginners like me.
thanks alot bud i did it all by following your instructions..thanks again take care.
Thanks for a very clear and easy to understand (even for a stump like me!) video.... Worked perfect.

@jshiznit1 No. You hook up the Linksys router directly to your PC to flash it.
I noticed that you opted to skip downloading and installing a generic build on the router first, before upgrading to the upgrade version you went with. The dd-wrt wiki generally recommends the initial flash before upgrading to a final version. Moreover, most guys I have seen do the initial flash as well. I apologize if this was covered farther down, but didn't you end up with a generic MAC address?

Just do another 30/30/30 and you will be fine. All this does is clear the vram of the old firmware. No biggy.

This like 90% of the vids on this subject is Over kill
Flash with the new firmware then a 30/30 power cycle
The set your ppoe and go online
Simpal
