I built 2 of these little guys and still have 1 left. Very much fun and learning too!
I am so jealous. I think I want one as bad today as back in 1984. I remember staring at that Heathkit catalog, and drooling over the Hero robot. I've built a full scale working R2-D2, and completed him for the most part 10 years ago. Currently working on some extra bits for him. But I still want a HERO, nothing screams 80's like that little guy!
The Hero robot always reminded me of the robots in the movie "Silent Running" Huey, Dewey and Louie.
I've wanted one of these since I saw it on Mr Wizard ! This is fantastic!
So glad you liked the video. I was hoping after all the work to get a battery in there that some one would be into it.

On my Christmas list every year. I can finally see it in action. Thanks ;)
Ho Ho Ho.
I never see these on eBay. Ever. Interesting piece.
Thank you, so glad I show off a working unit.
Well I feel like I'm back in the "Silent Running" movie! Seems like a lot of fun John! ☺MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄
I've got one of these myself. It has so much personality! One of the very last robots in my collection I'll ever part with. Glad you fired your up John. I was wondering if it still worked. There is a Y2K fix for it btw.
Yes, I was sure that someone would have fixed the year clock set by now. Yes it was fun to see the old bot still worked after 35 years.
Well he’s a trip . Merry Christmas 🎄 John the robot 🤖 man .
Merry Christmas to you as well.
That’s pretty remarkable for 1984, though it’s not going to win any Grammies. 😁
I got to see the Hero robots in action at a Heath kit store in the Virginia Beach area years ago. I can remember the Hero 2000 singing "Dem wheels, dem wheels, dem drive wheels."
Now that would have been cool to see. I may have to look into my Hero 2000 and see what batteries it needs to get going again.
@@Robothut I really hope you do!
I first saw one on The Price Is Right game show when I was 16. Wondering what they're worth now?
Wow that would have been a good Price is right to see. There are people that collect anything Heath Kit and those of us that collect robots, so there is a market for them but I do not know what they go for these days.
When I was young Back in the 70s I remember a robot built by some university that looked like this robot, it was called the beast and would locate wall plugs and charge itself by plugging it's arm into the plug.
Both the Hero 1 and Hero 2000 could do the auto charging thing and they were sold as kits for students to build.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you and a Merry Christmas too as well.
I remember I wanted one of these when they came out. They were super expensive at the time and limited on their functions so I never bit the bullet to buy one.
The Junor was the lowest priced of the 3 Hero robot kits so I went for it, had fun building it and playing with it. Cool to see it still works.
@@Robothut Very cool! I didn't know there was three different ones. I wanted the one with the arm. Thank you for showing these!
@@outsider238 Both the Hero 1 and Hero 2000 had arm's sold separately as add On's. The Junior did not have a arm function offered.
@@Robothut Okay I couldn't remember.
It has the Y2k bug lol
this sounds like some device for the blind or something I remember using.
like some old packmate or braill talking typewriter or something with the same speach synthesizer.
Yes it was cutting edge at the time. LOL
In the 90's Cybertoyz had one for sale he wanted something like $1000 I thought wow that's expensive but cool! Have no idea what they sell for these days
Yes working and Compleat they do go for some big bucks.
Do you happen to the schematic for the Hero Speech board?
Packed away some place I must have it, but its been over 35 years since I built the kit so no idea where to start looking.
@@Robothut lol. Okay. I am recreating the voice chip and was just wanting to make sure it works in everything it was used in. Thank anyway.
Do you have a PDF of the assembly manual?
No, back in the 1980's when I bought the kit and built it, they came with Printed Paper manuals. But I bet you can find a PDF of the manual online since there are so many clubs for Heath kit stuff.
who is here because of the price is right?
not y2k compatible lol. 1922!
So true. Lucky it works at all I guess.
