One time on a relatively busy trail, a guy's dog came up behind my burros and was about to bite a hind leg. Fortunately my burro clocked him in the head. When the owner caught up with his loose dog, he told me in no uncertain terms that I "shouldn't have an animal that kicks on the trail"....!!!!!!!!!!! I was so flabbergasted I could only laugh out loud at him. What an idiot.
Hi there! Would you mind sharing where this trailhead is located? We live in Albuquerque and would love to find more places to go hiking with our Shetland pony. Thanks!
This is Lone Pine, just north of Tijeras. I am not sure I would recommend though. Some of my other favorites are cienaga and oak flats, which have better trailer parking.
@@NewMexicoPackBurros Thanks so much! Good to know of places that are trailer-friendly. We moved here from Texas and are still getting to know the area. So far we've been taking the pony to the bosque, but we love hiking in the Sandias and can't wait to get out there with her. Just need to find the time!
I haven’t taken my donkeys to a public trail yet. My donkeys will chase my dogs away. Do you think I need to worry about them chasing dogs on a public trail? I’m new to this but would love to start packing on my donkeys
Hi David, I'm not Shane but I can relay my own experiences. We have 11 burros and most have been on public trails too many times for me to count. I have 3 to 4 dogs at home and they are loose around the burros frequently so all my burros are used to dogs. However, on trail, burros recognize other dogs as not their family. That said, all my burros except one ignore strange dogs. He actually play chases one of my dogs who loves to encourage him to do so. On trails he will try to approach any dog, and because I don't know if he'll actually chase a strange dog (he acts like he would like to) I make sure to keep his lead rope nice and short and keep him moving forward as we pass a dog. Usually though, the problem is loose dogs being aggressive toward my burros.

People can be oblivious!
Comet looks like a very good sized burro!
He is pretty normal size, slightly taller than my standard Julia, just built really well
Looks like the makings of a nice pack string ...
We hope so!

Thank you!
I'm going to try and take them on a short hike away from home next week!
How is your burro coming along?
Can you ride them
These guys are to small to ride, but there are larger mammoth donkeys that are rideable
