It feels like they wanted to do a “Spiderverse” animated style, but it ends up looking like a lazy excuse to NOT properly animate it. And it’s also 2D. Spiderverse is a 3D-animated comic book, it draws you in not just with its choppy animation, but with it’s visuals and beautiful effects. This Rick and Morty “anime” just looks like what a westerner thinks an anime looks like without actually watching any 💀
@@nicorobin7762 they usually make up for the “choppy” animation by making detailed drawings, or have moments of face-paced action that enhances the animation for a time. But my god, The Simpsons’ “Death Note” episode is a far better example than this.
Feels like this show is trying to capture that same crude, bizarre vibe Crayon-Shin Chan has without really understanding why that show is as beloved as it is.
This anime has nothing that made us think the original would be good for a few more seasons. It's just a generic anime with a rick and morty skin slapped on to it.
I absolutely adored the art, and I did feel a bit confused with how they decided to show Morty’s experience in the VR game he was being distracted with, but I feel like this following episode is gonna be SICK ❤ so excited to see what happens. I hope people can be patient with me and give next episode a chance before conforming to online opinions 🎉
Ah yes, conforming to online opinions is definitely watching the show yourself and sharing your own opinion. You can't say that just because people disagree with yours.
This SHOW had nothing to do with the actual rick and morty. It was all about morty in love with a character that we didn't even know.what the hell was [as] thinking with a anime that nobody asked for. Now that I think about it, isn't Jessica non cannon now? 🤔
I think what really makes this series bad is that fact that it simply just doesn't feel like rick and morty, there's barely any humor here which is mostly what makes the original show entertaining, not only that but i hate the fact we don't even get to see rick and morty interact despite having their names in the flipping title, and the way the characters react and communicate just feels so... awkward, the show is also lacking big time in characterization which is something EVERY ANIMATED SERIES SHOULD HAVE, its not doing enough to give us reasons on how we should feel about these characters or why the hell we should even care about them at all.
maybe because theres one episode? like wtf??? you're giving a critique on a show that has one episode theres obviously going to be more to the story stop hating off of one episode
I feel like at this point adult swim should really just stick to licensing anime cause it felt like ever since they started producing their own anime starting with Fena Pirate Princess they just haven’t had a good track record with these shows. Fena and Ninja Kamui started strong but completely fell flat on their faces in the end, Blade Runner Black Lotus and Shenmue were just kinda forgotten about and had no real fanfare, Housing Complex C was just dogshit (don’t get me started on the FLCL sequels) and it’s starting to look like R&M the Anime is gonna be yet another miss in this program of theirs. I’m hoping their future adult swim anime projects like Uzumaki, Lazarus or Rooster Fighter prove me wrong but im really starting to lose faith in this anime venture adult swim has been on

The fact that people honestly think janky frame rates and badly used shadows captures the 'anime look' shows they don't watch a lot of anime....at all. It's like saying "The Nutshack waa made in the US so it represents how all American cartoons should always look!" When did this trend even start because looking back at anime even from the 60s, they had limited budgets but there was still competition and pushing to create something eye catching and to improve animation styles and production. This is just some shit made by people who don't like or watch a lot of anime but thought all the advice in bad American how to draw books were actually true.

I liked the episode, but a lot of this is very fair. I'm realizing that a weekly schedule may be harming this show, which is rare, but i think it should have at least gotten a double premiere to clarify a few things (assuming thats what episode 2 is going to do). The usual criticism I saw was people crying that they didn't get it, so its nice to see you actually elaborate on that. I definitely see where the confusion is.
The mere idea of a Rick and Morty anime doesnt sound like a fresh creative addition to the franchise. It just feels like a creativly bankrupt way to keep this show alive on the apex of slowly but surely being replaced by Smiling Friends.
Technically, using the show's own rules against it, this IS canon because it exists. It's only one of an infinite, different versions of the original. This also flies in the face of the creator's "no selling out" standing. Seems like the show is waning a bit and they needed that extra "something" to draw people back in.
Protest to make the thumbnail to this video in the same vein as his other videos to Rick and Morty, with an over saturated color scheme and a few words in Goosebumps Font.
I'll just wait till all 10 episodes have dropped, binge 'em all in an afternoon instead of suffering for 10 weeks straight. At least now I know I need to watch the shorts.
This animation style looks really weird, but I have feeling this is a distraction from the original the show while they're trying to come up with "ideas". Still, this "distraction" doesn't work because I don't why we need it and what's the point of this if isn't canon to the original show.
There's no distraction, this was made separately from the show. The only reason we are getting this show and no new season of R&M this year is because of the union protests. This was made almost entirely in Japan, and is separate from the show. I imagine all Williams Street had to do with it's part was the English dub. All the animation and everything else was done in Japan. Japan wasn't effected by the union protests. They still had writers to write the show.
Just started the video and to reduce confusion for the audience this should've just been part of the main show and be its own arc or something. Its easy to write this off as its own universe out of the many rick and morty universes and such.
I've seen the animated shorts I watched them when they came out and they are absolutely not required viewing I don't know where you got that information from
I actually do like the artstyle and thought it was an interesting take on the R&M artstyle, but the show is definitely off to a terrible start. It did not have me hooked onto the idea and was definitely super confusing when they just cut to credits without explaining anything. It feels like there are no stakes because you do not know what is the main conflict in the show I guess? I doubt I will continue to watch it, but I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this.
You nailed it. But I like it and want to see more. I’m optimistic about be let down. No I think it should have dropped 3 episodes at once. If we got more content could set better pacing. We will see
2:12 THANK YOU!! The amount of people I've met/seen that (unfortunately) say that anime aren't cartoons because "It's a different style" is baffling (especially since they don't give an explanation outside of that)
Not going to comment on how the animation looks or defend it, but I noticed looking at the credits that the director, Takashi Sano did pretty much all the key animation for episode 1, which is a huge task for just one guy. I looked into what he did for the episode since you brought him up early in the video, and that is quite a lot of work he did. Directed and storyboarded the entire episode on top of all that, which is impressive, although unfortunate. So from what I know about other animators that animate entire episodes by themselves, for most cases you basically have to prioritize speed and drawing count over quality movement, due to the tight nature of most solo animated works. (Sometimes both speed and quality can be assured in solo animated episodes of TV anime, but it’s somewhat rare to see)
This didn't even look like an official project to me. When I learned that this is an actual thing on [as] and HBO Max and not a fan project on RUclips it genuinely baffled me.
"here is my best explanation for what happens in episode one -I don't fucking know" This describes my experience in a nutshell and I love confusing media.
Same just wish the animation was smoother since this type of art style works better with fluid animation. I always liked anime who were more experimental with their looks than the ones who all look the same
I wasn’t expecting this to be good tbh. I love adult swim, but making R&M into an anime wasn’t a good choice imo. Great idea & creativity, but very poor execution.
I thought I was just stupid for not getting what was going on lmao. Literally all I can say by the end is I was kind of intrigued and a little curious to see where it goes.
This anime spin off is the textbook example of why any and all companies should never ever do anything meme related. Just because the internet made it into a running joke, that doesn't mean it should automatically be turned into an actual product/series.
You know it's rare to find an anime based on western cartoon like we had the powerpuff girls z and lilo and stitch anime so why don't we have this type of anime?
I will be honest Episode 1 was only 20 minutes long, but since nothing happened it only felt like 7 minutes. I was so confused when the credits started rolling.
Just outta curiosity i decided to look at the wikipedia article for this and the description of the first episode is killing me, look: Meanwhile, Morty is using a virtual reality gaming device given by Rick in his room, and enters into simulation of multiple universes all at once. He uses different tactics against his first enemies; may or may not be saved from an attacking monster; encounters a time warrior girl named Elle, a man named Frank or a Rick losing his Morty; may or may not be clear that the game world he experiences is fictional; treasures the Nander Dragon's tear gifted from Elle or Frank; lives an ordinary life or serves as the President until his death; and may or may not have a touching reunion with Frank or Elle.
I loved the adult swim anime short and had hopes for this. In that short Rick is a loving grandpa who saves morty with a dark twist in the end that suggests he might have actually just used morty. I thought this new series would be used to do more emotional things with the characters and wouldn't be strictly a comedy.

It's strange how WB just released a Suicide Squad anime as well.. Is this going to be a new trend going foward?
the ssi anime was good
I can't wait until Adventure Time : The Anime. And Eric Andre : The Anime.
I mean the Suicide Squad Anime was actually good. Though I feel like the existence of the Rick and Morty one does say a bunch.
@@boardcertifiableAn Adventure Time anime would go hard tho…
Literally The "Thing, Japan" Meme.
Anime is popular and several westerb ips are floundering so basic corporate math is if we turn our shows into anime then itll succeed, they did with star wars, suicide squad, theyre doing it with lord of the rings and of course rick and morty, but theyve all failed so far nobody talks about them, but im sure this wont be the last of the attempts either
This Rick and Morty “anime” just looks like what a westerner thinks an anime looks like without actually watching any 💀
A westener making what they think an anime is without actually watching any. A tale as old as time.
Made by a Japanese studio. This isn't what you said it is. This is a clearly design choice by the studio
@@ProfessorHeavy1avatar pulled that off very well and ended up being better than most animes
tons of japanese studios use this choppy animation style
@@nicorobin7762 they usually make up for the “choppy” animation by making detailed drawings, or have moments of face-paced action that enhances the animation for a time.
But my god, The Simpsons’ “Death Note” episode is a far better example than this.
Feels like this show is trying to capture that same crude, bizarre vibe Crayon-Shin Chan has without really understanding why that show is as beloved as it is.
Omg this anime sucks . Why don’t they just add more seasons to the regular Rick and Morty . Or team up evil Morty with them again .
This anime has nothing that made us think the original would be good for a few more seasons. It's just a generic anime with a rick and morty skin slapped on to it.
I think the VR headset thing is supposed to be a spin on the vat of acid Prestige idea with the grace an planing of SAO so it succeeds at failing.
Omgoodness that stupid headset like I don’t think even Morty would be interested in fake romance.😢
The second episode will determine if it's worth watching or not.
Ah yes, conforming to online opinions is definitely watching the show yourself and sharing your own opinion. You can't say that just because people disagree with yours.
I agree it is horrible, I quit after episode 1.
Cartoonshi has become so entertaining to watch the more time passes.
@@juanrico-e9u I'm still gonna keep watching the show to see where this goes but my points still stand, it's a pretty bad first episode
I’m hoping their future adult swim anime projects like Uzumaki, Lazarus or Rooster Fighter prove me wrong but im really starting to lose faith in this anime venture adult swim has been on
Agreed. Enough of this "made for export" dogwater.
That’s because people think those shows are for old people as in this not kool there trying to make shows for kids not us as in we are old generation they think there better the main thing there after is ppl who watch the show doesn’t matter what age they are as in good bye real artists and good writers and welcome stupid less interesting tv shows just for the most people who will watch it! 😢
I could see this working as an anthology series but not a full show and neither did the showrunners sadly
A cartoonshi plush? Wow, I sure hope people will be normal and responsible with it
Fella already addressed it in the promo
XD
I genuinely thought this thing was fan made the first time I saw it
Yeah looks like a japanese school project.
Because it looks like something you would see on a college computer whenever they have free time. It's absolute slop whenever you're using a big company, this would be impressive if it was some random RUclipsr or fan project, but the fact this is from a huge show production company. It's just embarrassing
The fact that people honestly think janky frame rates and badly used shadows captures the 'anime look' shows they don't watch a lot of anime....at all.
It's like saying "The Nutshack waa made in the US so it represents how all American cartoons should always look!"
When did this trend even start because looking back at anime even from the 60s, they had limited budgets but there was still competition and pushing to create something eye catching and to improve animation styles and production.
This is just some shit made by people who don't like or watch a lot of anime but thought all the advice in bad American how to draw books were actually true.

I said multiple times when watching it "...what is happening?". Thought I might have just been stupid but glad to know I wasn't the only one.
I'll be inhaling copium trying to tell myself that this is fan-made and not real.
The mere idea of a Rick and Morty anime doesnt sound like a fresh creative addition to the franchise. It just feels like a creativly bankrupt way to keep this show alive on the apex of slowly but surely being replaced by Smiling Friends.
PLEASE GOD! Lower the opacity of the shadows
I saw a couple of the shorts when they originally aired. They didn't make any damn sense to me.
was anyone really expecting more rick and morty to be a good thing
ive been rewatching the seasons i thought were good and theyre total shit
i might be in the minority, but i don't think the animation is that bad. i haven't watched the full episode to be fair.
Using Crayon Shin Chan as the "anime" style you're replicating is... certainly a choice.
WTF who thought this was a good idea!???
Just started the video and to reduce confusion for the audience this should've just been part of the main show and be its own arc or something. Its easy to write this off as its own universe out of the many rick and morty universes and such.
Shin Chan lookin ahh anime
At least that show is better
I've seen the animated shorts I watched them when they came out and they are absolutely not required viewing I don't know where you got that information from
Rather have a smiling friends anime
Everyone is Humanised into Anime Characters except Mr Boss is the Same
I honestly would love a anime-themed Smiling Friends episode. Only if they keep the show's insanity
I can't for Rick & Morty The North Korean State Media Propaganda Film next
I actually do like the artstyle and thought it was an interesting take on the R&M artstyle, but the show is definitely off to a terrible start. It did not have me hooked onto the idea and was definitely super confusing when they just cut to credits without explaining anything. It feels like there are no stakes because you do not know what is the main conflict in the show I guess? I doubt I will continue to watch it, but I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this.
Mark my words once the English dub drops and a few more episodes it’s gonna be a cult classic
forgot to comment this but hey does anyone else think that Morty actually looks adorable in this style
The animation kinda reminds me of that Rick and Morty parody. They really didn't try hard with the anime
You nailed it. But I like it and want to see more. I’m optimistic about be let down. No I think it should have dropped 3 episodes at once. If we got more content could set better pacing. We will see

THANK YOU!! The amount of people I've met/seen that (unfortunately) say that anime aren't cartoons because "It's a different style" is baffling (especially since they don't give an explanation outside of that)
If they were going to make the shorts required for the show, they should’ve compiled them into a single episode.
I Think People Are More Excited For A Cartoonshi Plushie Than They Were For A Rick & Morty Anime.
(Sometimes both speed and quality can be assured in solo animated episodes of TV anime, but it’s somewhat rare to see)
We all know the best episode of Rick and Morty is Bushland Adventures. How could they possibly top that?
I thought it was me. Slow boring and confusing
Cartoonshi talks about anime? 😱 unbelievable.
More cartoon users should talk about anime.
This didn't even look like an official project to me. When I learned that this is an actual thing on [as] and HBO Max and not a fan project on RUclips it genuinely baffled me.
is it crazy that i dont mind the artstyle it just reminds me of shin chan
the characters should stick out more though
"here is my best explanation for what happens in episode one -I don't fucking know"
This describes my experience in a nutshell and I love confusing media.
I actually like how the show looks
Same just wish the animation was smoother since this type of art style works better with fluid animation. I always liked anime who were more experimental with their looks than the ones who all look the same
I miss confusing animes, so this is actually pretty cool for me.
I wasn’t expecting this to be good tbh. I love adult swim, but making R&M into an anime wasn’t a good choice imo. Great idea & creativity, but very poor execution.
Couldn’t agree more
I thought I was just stupid for not getting what was going on lmao.
Literally all I can say by the end is I was kind of intrigued and a little curious to see where it goes.
Nah I like the artstyle
This anime spin off is the textbook example of why any and all companies should never ever do anything meme related.
Just because the internet made it into a running joke, that doesn't mean it should automatically be turned into an actual product/series.
You know it's rare to find an anime based on western cartoon like we had the powerpuff girls z and lilo and stitch anime so why don't we have this type of anime?
I will be honest Episode 1 was only 20 minutes long, but since nothing happened it only felt like 7 minutes. I was so confused when the credits started rolling.
Eh, I don’t think the style is that bad, if anything it reminds me of FLCL, and I think that’s what they were going for.
Thank you for confirming this for me. Now I just need JustStop to talk about it and my opinions are valid.
I think the anime rick and morty is 6/10. I think it will get better over time.
I've only watched 3 minutes so far. I don't know if I can finish the episode. Bring back Rick and 2 crows 😭
Love your videos
Review camp camp!
I loved the adult swim anime short and had hopes for this. In that short Rick is a loving grandpa who saves morty with a dark twist in the end that suggests he might have actually just used morty. I thought this new series would be used to do more emotional things with the characters and wouldn't be strictly a comedy.
