They met for the first time in the water park. We are told that. The ending is the beginning because she forgets Blue and him at the End / beginning. It's not the first time they met, though it might be the last
I figure together they try to find out whose dog it is, such a friendly dog, and oh she has a lead in her pocket, handy. Then they realize they don't know who they are, but he has an address in his pocket! So they figure they'll go there together (they like each other) and then from there they can figure out where she lives, and take the dog to the shelter. When they get there they find the photo collage on the wall
I loved the movie. But now rewatching this I have so many questions. I mean if they forgot each other and fell in love again after that, what happened after this scene? They still lived together, they’d get to the same apartment and found out they were a couple, no? It would be impossible to go separate ways like that even if they lost their memories 🥲
I think that's the beauty of this film. It has a psychological element to it. Like, Emma can't remember why she was sad the day she really met Jude---in the pool. I don't think it's a literal loop necessarily but both of them clearly didn't know who each other were at the beginning of the film. The key line is: "Who are you?" When their dog runs up. She forgot her dog. Their dog. How long she'd had NIA, I'm not sure. I have to watch it again to clarify it for myself. For all I know, she was showing symptoms throughout the whole film, but because Jude was the one being questioned, maybe she only picked from things she DID remember when she was quizzing him, not knowing that she'd been forgetting little details here and there, too. Plus, the movie focused on her, so it's hard to say what the film did or didn't show from her point of view. We clearly see Jude's symptoms worsening and we see the visual graphics for that but for her, it's not the same. That's some of my interpretation of it, at least.
They wouldn't even remember their apartment or address at all. It's all gone, life would be nearly impossible to live. They'd need to go to a group home, but if that slowly happens to the entire world, then everyone is doomed. Eventually everyone will just act on instinct and just fade away.
Obviously the screenwriters know the ending doesn't make sense. When Emma first (thought she) met Jude, she was already well-progressed in her dementia. So the story couldn't have unfolded they way it did. Apparently they though it was a cool twist and went with it anyway.
I know he lost his memories but did he lose his short term memory too? How did he forget he just had an altercation with her right before she says i was so sad the day i met you?
Yes, they do lose short-term memory. If you can recall what happened to Ben and Samantha, he was alone in the room for a while, then he forgot her. For jude, after the altercation, he says, "i will go get some help," then starts walking alone for a while and later returns back to her because he forgot why he is walking in that direction. And that's where the movie begins. That's how she remembered meeting him for the first time because she forgot him too. Emma's POV was focused on jude having NIA. Little did she know she had it, too. Poor dog...
Ending is the beginning of the movie because that's how she remembered meeting him for the first time. Poor Emma, she knew 😢

We're also warned that this is going to happen because she forgets who Annie is
