WIDOWS, DIVORCED PEOPLE, SINGLE PARENTS & OLDER PEOPLE
There are different types of singles. Those within an age which society has labeled " marriage age". For the sake of this conversation we will put it at 40. Those that have that are within that age and beyond that age but are parents but never been married. Those that are within that age range and beyond but lost their spouse to death. And finally Those within that age range and beyond but are divorced.
All of these have unique experiences. Here are some factors .
1. The general principles that govern other single people apply to them. They are to believe God for a mate like everyone else. They are to stay pure like everyone else. They are to be accountable like everyone else.
- It may be challenging because of what people say and because of the responsibilities they have , if they are heading households. Or if they have experienced the heartache of divorce or death or a spouse.
- But the Bible assured us that God gives special attention to widows and women without husbands, for example.
Psalm 68:5 tells us, “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation
The Bible also says God takes on the cover of a husband when there is none.
“For your Maker is your husband- the Lord Almighty is his name- the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭54‬:‭5‬ ‭
2. The Lord has freed widows to marry. Marriage ends at death. The Bible says:
1 Corinthians 7:39
A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord
For young widows it says :
1 Timothy 5:11-16
So I want younger widows to get married, have children, manage their households, and not give opponents of the faith any occasion for slander. Some [widows] have already turned away [from the faith] to follow Satan.
Ruth in the Bible is an example of God coming through for a widow. She was happily remarried and became part of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
3. Divorced people can remarry. Biblical divorce is on the grounds of marital unfaithfulness, abandonment or abuse. The Bible says women should remain single if they have left the marriage for any other reason. But if you have tried everything and you taken steps for biblical reconciliation or have failed to, you can get married. It is complicated . It involves a lot of healing. It involves dealing with blended families. It involves deep introspection because you don’t want to be taking character flaws from one marriage to another. You need to pray and seek good counsel. Your heart will go through many stages as a divorced person because God calls divorce “violence “. Malachi 2 .16
4. God can bless older singles who have not been married. It does not matter what age. God answers prayer. The same God who answers prayer for a 21 one year old can also answer the prayer of a 60 year old . The trick is to stay steadfast in faith because people will talk and discourage you. But the man God gives you will be your tailor made testimony.
