Pro tip: She touched on this in the video but be sure to apply the decal over an already glossy surface, otherwise the decal will "silver" and be a bit more obvious. Also, hobby shops sell decal softening solution (like Mr Mark Softer or Micro Sol) which helps the decal conform to irregular surfaces and make it look more painted on.
Glossy surface can be lightly "matted" with 0000 steel wool and it won't silver, just makes the decal easier to stick. Also rolling a cotton bud over the decal instead of swiping it, makes it easier to get all the air and water off underneath. Especially if the surface is curved
Will I have any trouble if I sanded on old logo off a headstock then put another one directly on it, or will I have to put something on before I apply my waterslide logo?
@@3x3CustomTamar Good to know. I just bought waterslide paper (because of this video) and now I'm in the process of making my logo. Seal first, check. Although I can think of better sealers than Mod Podge, but I guess it works based on the video. I usually use clear shellac to seal (normally use the "sanding sealer" one, but I don't know that it's any different than flake shellac), so I'm assuming that will work for a "glossy" finish on which to apply the decal. Why don't the directions in the decal paper package say that? Maybe my paper is different. There are even papers available that don't require sealing ... but I'm skeptical.
This video is the first time I saw this idea! (I did water slide decals on models as a child, but never put two and two together...) I just made my own decals for a telecaster I’m building and am in love with the results! Thanks for putting this video out!
For that size decals: Drop or two of water at the point where the decal will be. Put the precut decal over that drop of water and wait a 30sec or so and then just slide the decal. Many times it's so much easier when decal is already at the surface you want it to. Also just a small amount of water is needed to soak the backing paper off the decal side.
This is an interesting technique. I've never seen this before. I didn't even hear the name before. Thanks a lot for sharing. Unfortunately, I don't have an inkjet printer anymore. So I'll not be able to apply this technique. That's a pity.
I have used testor inkjet products on my Cajon builds, and placed the decal on lighter woods like Birch and the water slide decal does not show through. I varnish first, then place decal then varnish 2 more times.
That looks amazing and you made it look so easy Tamar! 👏 You show us some of the coolest things! I didn’t know you could buy paper like that! Thank you so much for sharing some of your ideas with us!
I have. But water slide decals are the traditional way to put logos on guitar head stocks. The image is also clearer with these decals. I find the ironed on toner based images to be a bit grainy/blurry
I noticed that your decal didn't lay down very well, and that was not your fault. Try Testor's brand decal paper. It becomes almost invisible when dry.
If you’ve dyed a guitar in a darker color, is there a way to avoid sanding the dye off the guitar when trying to get rid of the clear part of the decal?
For anyone interested, the way I know is by laser printing it on a transfer sheet made for this with special toner. Google Forever transfer paper and waterslide. They make way more types of papers so you're possibilities may open up. The equipment investment is very small. Do your research and you'll discover many options.
I don’t have a laser printer. My inkjet works fine so there’s no need for me to change it out. This video is for other ppl who only have inkjets as well bc they might want to do the same thing without investing in another machine
@@3x3CustomTamar I understand. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was mentioning it for anyone interested in it to see another option. Not trying to school you girl, I'm here to learn from you. 😅 I edited my comment to try to fix it.
@@3x3CustomTamar I stuck some images on my refrigerator 😊. Slight delicate process possibly because of the quality of paper being sold here . I still have around 100 something pcs of it. I think I did not give the amount of time to dry the way you did -so there is a learning here Tamr😊👌thanks for your reply .
It’s just a different thing. You can print pictures with color on them I think is the main difference. Can’t get color with a laser. Also a laser etched into the wood. This sits on top of the wood
That is really cool! Can do it in colors too? I'd create a branding iron that fitted to the soldering iron as an attachment. I love the smells of wood! 8-) It'd be smoke'n Hot like your projects! =-)
Why didn't you print the whole page of designs rather than one small design, what a waste of paper. Apart from that, keep on doing what you are doing, you're a joy to watch!
Because I didn’t need any more decals. I saved the paper to be used at a later date. When doing that you just have to change the printer settings to the new sized paper. I’ve done that in the past.
You can use the portion that you didn’t spray sealer on. Yes. I have done that before. Just make sure the printer settings are changed to accommodate a new paper size since you will cut away the part that you already used
So, why does it take so many times to make the edges disappear? Can you not just coat and sand, then recoat and then just sand the edges after until they disappear?
Thank's for the helpfull video! Btw: The audio "issue" you had before seems to reappeared again (quite low audio level compared to any other RUclips video).
Cool beans, that's neat... To bad inkjet printers are such junk lol for home use laser is the money. Unless you like cleaning your heads literally constantly, throw that inkjet in the junk "draw". Keep up the good work nonetheless

Awesome! Ppl say the laser printer decals are better if you have access to one. I don’t. Ha.
car modelers probably love this!
For sure! So many applications!
The laser printer decals are easier, they don't require sealing, the ink is waterproof, so you can apply the decal and then sand and seal it after.
I would like to see you playing the guitar, because in woodworking you are the best.
Ha! I’m not the best guitarist. I wish I had more time to practice
Great video! I wonder if you can use these decals for a metal surface like a painted sewing machine? Would love to know!
