Thanks for the video. I was surprised by the amount of time it takes to make a hat as well as how labor intensive the hat making process is. Well worth the money.
Wow! I made hatters tools for Art! It's great to see him ... Thanks for making this video. Pine Street just isn't the same without VS Hats! He helped me immensely when I was learning how to make my own hats, I couldn't thank him enough. I wish him all the best in his retirement.
Thanks for the comment Luke. I just saw Art on Easter weekend. He had some business in the Seattle area and came by the house for dinner. It was great to see him, he is doing well and staying busy in his retirement 😃. ~Jed 🤠
Any advice on where I can get the proper tools to make hats? I wanna get into it with my sons as maybe a hobby/business. Do they offer apprenticeships? Thanks!
@@mentallifeconsultants5101 I make some of them. I made my own hat block, pullerdowner (the moon shaped thing to pull the hat down over the block), pencil curler, breaking tool (for pushing the string where the crown meets the brim), tolliker (for pushing the bottom of the crown into the formillion, I even made some replacement wedges for Art's antique formillion). Though I wasn't able to reproduce the his antique aluminum formillion for him. Most of these tools you can find online as various people make them, there's even a few people who make conformateur and formillion reproductions, the price is high, but good tools cost good money! good luck with your new hobby.
Thanks so much for the filming of this video. I enjoyed watching the process. I am still wearing a Scala Fedora. But I just started dreaming of my first Stetson Straoliner B.
I just spent a half hour watching a guy make a hat. I couldn't let it go. The artistry of it all appealed to me as a professional artist myself. I own several fedoras, and a couple of derbies, (I won't even go into the cowboy hats here.) None so fine as this hat to be sure. Now I keep thinking of a sage green fedora I lusted for at the Optimo Hatworks in Bisbee AZ. I wanted it so bad, I'd have paid a chunk for it. Sadly it didn't fit and was one of a kind and not one that they made there. Still that place was my first class in good-hat school. This video was my second class. THANKS.
What an insane amount of work and craftsmanship to make that hat. Thank you for making this so that the rest of us ordinary people can learn and appreciate this dying art. Absolutely incredible.
Man am I glad I ran into this video. Now I know why I will never become a master hat maker...not enough time in my life to learn all that Art knows. I am sure Art has forgotten more than I will ever know.

I must say this is the best soothing video, I have ever seen about the making of a hat. I didn’t know, so much detail went into the making of a hat. I have a new found respect for hat makers all over the USA. I must say there isn’t too many of these guys around, I hope this won’t be a lost art to other competitors like China. Just looking at so much machinery, wooden models of different shapes, steam machines, sewing machines, I mean this guy’s shop is huge, and so much dedication and labor intensive. I got to say, it takes a person with a talent such as this one to make such beautiful hats, ribbons, and all the details that go into the making of a hat. Not just anyone is as talented , and dedicated as this man is to be a lost art because dedication is a lost art. Next time, I buy a Stetson hat, I will look at it as an art of work and the dedication that was put into it. Great video, and sad he retired. He made great hats throughout his career, and hope, he passed on this art to someone else. 👍

Art is the master. My wife bought me a nice Panama from Equador for Father's Day about a decade ago. Unfortunately it went into a swimming pool soon after and turned into a soggy potato chip. I sent it to Art and he did his best to bring it back to life. I had him replace the plain black ribbon with a lovely forest green with a pewter accent in the bow. The hat isn't perfect but it has a ton of character and looks great with that ribbon. God bless Art Fawcett!

When you put on your Hat pick it up by the Brim not the Crown the Fedora Dimples are Fragile unless the Hat Cone was thick. Art's Hats are beauty's! Thank You!
😆 It’s funny you mention this, I was just explain this to someone this weekend. Art used to tell me that all the time… but, I am a creature of habit (not all my habits are good ones). So, while I am aware of the “proper” (if that word does indeed fit in this case) way of donning a hat, I don’t always remember. -Jed 🤠

What a wonderful video! Had no idea there was a custom hat maker down here in Southern Oregon. Sadly, looks like I missed him, if he retired in January. Big congrats on getting a few hats from him.
Yeah, I went in and bought a bunch of his prototypes before he closed the door. Art wears the same size hat as me so, since most of his prototypes were made to fit him, I just scooped ‘em up and walked out balancing a stack of hat boxes. I’ll get a video posted soon of my collection of hats. - Jed 🤠
I’m not sure that this will work but I have three questions and you may be able to answer one and Art the others. Why was denatured alcohol used during sanding, what oil is used on the felt, and is there any benefit to another application of that oil to one of his 100% beaver hats that is 10 years old? I have several 100% beaver fedoras and while all are great hats, the VS hat is the one I’m most likely to wear as it just feels and wears so well and does so after lots of wear. Thanks for the video and much thanks to Mr. Fawcett for letting you into his lair.
I found a thread over on “The Fedora Lounge” bulletin board, Art may be more like to answer over there rather than here (I’m not sure if he has a RUclips account). I will answer what I can here... As I understand it (and he mentions this in the video but you might have to bump the volume up) the denatured alcohol helps push the core down. Again, he explains it better in the video than I can... The oil Art is using is Coconut Oil, again he says this in the video but the equipment is running and it’s a little hard to hear. He also mentions that some folks use Vaseline... I don’t know if reapplying that oil would be beneficial but, I am watching that thread on the Fedora Lounge so if you ask him I will learn too! 🤠 I prefer the fit of my Art Fawcett made Fedoras over most of my other hats as well. I really think it has a lot to do with that conformer. Jessica, as I mention in the video, has two Art Fawcett fedoras. She is not a “hat person” (like I am) but can wear these fedoras all day because of the fit. She says she actually forgets she has them on! They are so comfortable. I hope that answers your questions.
Work or Art indeed , too bad you weren't allowed to film the knot as he ended up retiring anyway , was just curious to see it but such a great craftsman he was !
Great informative video Jed. It was really enjoyable to see how a master makes a custom hat. My only suggestion would be for you to put a body "clip mic" on your subject so Art could be heard. He did quite a bit of talking, but I was unable to hear most of what he was saying. It helped that you explained a lot of the process. That being said, you produced another terrific video. Thanks for sharing! Bear
Yes, he really is. As for a Facebook, I know he has a personal page (and he is not on very often) but I don’t think he has a professional/business page. You can sometimes find him on the “Fedora Lounge” forum. Hope that helps. ~Jed 🤠
Very cool! I never would have guess felt hat would get sanded or oil for that matter! You really can use coconut oil for everything! 😊 Does he do vegan hats?
If it's any consolation, similar to shaving yaks for their wool, I hear they're doing the same for beavers rather than pulling the hair out! So that's sort of like a vegan fur felt hat. I hope you find that helpful.
New subscriber. Loved this video so very much. I've convereted to classics men's style over the last three years, and naturally felt hats are part of it. It's so wonderful to see the process from start to finish. I look forward to future video. I'll take on the tip about the coconut oil
@@JEDiTV That was the channel that got me started on the journey. Thanks for the warm welcome. Looking forward to the next video. Wishing you and your loved ones safety and good health during this virus situation. Hope you're all well
See if you can find a hatter in your area and ask about an apprenticeship. I know there aren’t many of these craftsmen around but there might be one in your area. ~Jed 🤠
It's sorry to see the old craftsmen " Hanging up their hats " :-( Great job covering the process. I see now why hats can be so expensive. I bet a lot of people will be sad to see him go. Is the shop closing or is someone new coming in ? Your Western gear is expanding :-)
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad you enjoyed this episode. I know the Fedora world is sad to see him go. As am I. Art has been a good friend since the first time I entered his shop. I go in there sometimes just to watch him work (or to distract him from work!). He is a wealth of knowledge!! By the way, the shop (equipment, etc), and the name “VS Custom Hats” is for sale.
I’m not sure what they are using the shop location for. I moved shortly before he closed. As for classes… if that is something you’re interested in I’d find a local hatter and see about apprenticing under him/her. -Jed 🤠
any snowballs chance in hell you know where i can find the old school WOVEN rayon ribbon that goes in-between the ends of the leather sweatband ON THE INSIDE OF A FEDORA HAT that you would typically find on vintage 1940's/1950's vintage fedoras? Yes the milliners sell it by the bow, but i am looking for a roll of this tiny 1cm ribbon mentioned above, not to be mistaken for thesmooth flimsy "Chinese Sensation" polyester ribbon..
Art did have some health problems late in 2018. He has mostly recovered from those and is doing well. I was just in to see him last weekend. I’m gonna miss my visits with him when he retires and moves across the country.
Perhaps on eBay 🤷♂️ You cold try a search for Art Fawcett hat or Vintage Silhouettes hat. But, Art retired a couple of years back so he no longer makes hats. -Jed 🤠
Yes sir. Last I spoke to him he was holding off on selling his home and moving because of the pandemic. But, his business is closed and he is enjoying retirement (and working on projects around his house). ~Jed 🤠
He may have passed it to his apprentice. And, I’m sure that any good hatter could reverse engineer it. He just didn’t want it on the video and I respected his request not to film it. -Jed 🤠
likes his expression when he sees himself in the mirror at the end. His smile just says it all. It turned out exactly how he wanted it. Really great hat, great shaping, suits him incredibly well

Glad you enjoyed the episode!
-Jed 🤠
Great informative video Jed. It was really enjoyable to see how a master makes a custom hat. My only suggestion would be for you to put a body "clip mic" on your subject so Art could be heard. He did quite a bit of talking, but I was unable to hear most of what he was saying. It helped that you explained a lot of the process. That being said, you produced another terrific video. Thanks for sharing! Bear
Thanks Ol’ Bear.
-Jed (who STILL keeps finding comments that are years-old with no replies) 🤠
Art is amazing wow I wonder if he has a Facebook
Yes, he really is. As for a Facebook, I know he has a personal page (and he is not on very often) but I don’t think he has a professional/business page. You can sometimes find him on the “Fedora Lounge” forum. Hope that helps.
~Jed 🤠
I cannot wait to get our matching hats from him! Love the video Jed! Super cool to see him create that hat
Thanks Kook! Hopefully we can debut them at the Oregon State Championship match in June!!
Great video! Has anyone taken over his hat shop?
Art sold some of the supplies and equipment to another hatter. The shop in Central Point (OR) is closed.
~Jed 🤠
What is the style of hart made in this video? Looks great
It’s a Fedora. Hope that info helps. - Jed 🤠
Very cool! I never would have guess felt hat would get sanded or oil for that matter! You really can use coconut oil for everything! 😊 Does he do vegan hats?
“Vegan Hats”... you’re funny. 🤪
@@JEDiTV Yes i believe he does panamas. But a felt style will always be fur felt. And you wont likely find a vegan sweatband.
A. B. - you’re absolutely correct. (I even have one of Art’s Panama hats).
Thanks for subscribing. I get a lot of fashion tips from the folks at Gentlemen’s Gazette here on RUclips. Hope you enjoy the future episodes. - Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV That was the channel that got me started on the journey. Thanks for the warm welcome. Looking forward to the next video. Wishing you and your loved ones safety and good health during this virus situation. Hope you're all well
I would love to learn I love to do that learn new things
@@JEDiTV He just looks like a really great guy :-)
He is that!
Double checking -- he sewed in the lining, not glued it - right?
Yes, it is sewn in.
-Jed
What's the brim size of this fedora? Great proportions!
2 3/8” Brim
5” Crown (slops to 4” in the back)
- Jed 🤠
@@JEDiTV great! Can you still remember the open crown height?
Andreas, I do not... - Jed 🤠
What happened to the shop now? Are there any classes to take in this ?
I’m not sure what they are using the shop location for. I moved shortly before he closed. As for classes… if that is something you’re interested in I’d find a local hatter and see about apprenticing under him/her.
-Jed 🤠
Unfortunately I don't think this shop exists anymore.
It doesn’t. Art retired in 2020 or 21… and the shop closed shortly after.
Jidi your smoken HOT 🔥
Thanks.
-Jed 🤠
7:45 Ummm... what is the blender for?
😆 I actually wondered the same thing when I was editing. I’ll ask Art next time I see him.
that type of hat my uncle ore in the forties
That is certainly when that style was in high-fashion.
Hey did he make Indiana Jones hat?
No he did not. I believe that one was made by a Hatter in Portland Oregon, his name escapes me at the moment…
Hey man! What is the height of the crown?
5” Crown (slops to 4” in the back).
@@JEDiTV wow, I thought it was a 6 inch.
any snowballs chance in hell you know where i can find the old school WOVEN rayon ribbon that goes in-between the ends of the leather sweatband ON THE INSIDE OF A FEDORA HAT that you would typically find on vintage 1940's/1950's vintage fedoras? Yes the milliners sell it by the bow, but i am looking for a roll of this tiny 1cm ribbon mentioned above, not to be mistaken for thesmooth flimsy "Chinese Sensation" polyester ribbon..
I don’t... but, you might try The Fedora Lounge (online bulletin board). Someone from that group is bound to know. - Jed 🤠
re:FL, nah..no dice there either, all i got was info on which milliners sells it per-bow, not where to find a roll..do you use it in your hats ?
I’m not a hat maker. This video was about my hat being made by a, now retired, hatter. - Jed
ok thanks anyway
No problem Kar Ser. Good luck in your search. - Jed
Yay I’m the one thousandth like!
That is SO awesome! Thank you!
-Jed 🤠
A Rabbit or Wool felt?
100% Beaver.
Do you know if Art is fine? Unfortunately he stopped answering emails for long time :(
Art did have some health problems late in 2018. He has mostly recovered from those and is doing well. I was just in to see him last weekend. I’m gonna miss my visits with him when he retires and moves across the country.
@@JEDiTV Thank you Sir! It seems he already retired. I've sent multiple emails and have been waiting for weeks, but no answer :(
How much do you have cost to make one
Did you watch the video? I don’t make ‘em. And the guy that is in the video, making the hat, is retired. Good luck on your search.
-Jed
Can I get the same one in 7 1/2?
Perhaps on eBay 🤷♂️ You cold try a search for Art Fawcett hat or Vintage Silhouettes hat. But, Art retired a couple of years back so he no longer makes hats.
-Jed 🤠
Has Art truly retired yet?
Yes sir. Last I spoke to him he was holding off on selling his home and moving because of the pandemic. But, his business is closed and he is enjoying retirement (and working on projects around his house). ~Jed 🤠
👍👍👍 topinya bagus mahar berapa bos
Thank you.
Nothing to it! Hope Art has some young apprentices to learn this skill/art.
Thanks for the comment. I know Art did train a couple of apprentices so it’ll be interesting to see where they take their craft. - 🤠
How much?
Mine was $385.
JED iTV You were lucky, you didn’t get the “if you watch” upcharge. If you help the upcharge is increased.
Nothing to it!
🤠
Sucks he doesn't show the knot making for the new generation.....
He may have passed it to his apprentice. And, I’m sure that any good hatter could reverse engineer it. He just didn’t want it on the video and I respected his request not to film it.
-Jed 🤠
You probably had another hat in the last three years.
Yep! And a number of them are from Art Fawcett. You can see my current collection here:
