This was in North Carolina when I stayed with my cousin a couple of summers. A favorite beer at the time was Falstaff. Several of the locals who would drop by almost every evening shook salt in their Falstaff....but I never knew why...but someone later told me it made the beer keep a foam head longer.

When I started going to neighborhood bars in the late 1950's there were salt shakers all along the bar and on each table. It was added to beers like Hamm's, Grain Belt & Miller. It is something that went out of style by the 1970's except for the older people.

I love sour beers, mainly during the winter season. They go well alone, but if you are going to eat it with something, it goes well with extremely thick textured foods, i.e. foods with pungent cheeses such as blue cheese. Many specialty burgers that have bleu cheese, for example, would be paired well with a sour bier. The two cancel each other out making the bier/beer quite lovely.

For the record, milk stouts don’t have actual milk in them, they have lactose, “milk sugar”, as a sweetener.
