Just fyi, something I learned. Gray squirrels are a deep woods squirrel, while fox squirrels are a more open woods squirrel. Sometimes their territories overlap.
I will share that the "quarters" tip DOES work - and quite well! I was new to squirrel hunting and had one run up a tree next to me and the opposite side. After about a minute, I tapped the quarters. It came right out and sat on a limb over me. Boom - done deal! I might try the Primos for the fun if it but for 50 cents, NVER go squirrel hunting without a pair of quarters! Thanks for the videos!
Cheers man, no one has mentioned that you won’t have squirrels coming in to the call, they all showed how to use but not what to expect from it. From an Irish hunter.
The bobcat and coyote topic is why I hunt squirrels with a semiautomatic Ruger 10/22 Carbine and why I use Winchester Super X Power Point ammo. The Winchester rounds drop squirrels on the first shot every single time if it is a shot to the head, neck, or chest.
The best thing to do early season let's go in in the morning before the wind starts blowing where you can watch the tops of the trees just look for moving Limbs and then slowly sneak over to that spot sit there for a while and if you don't see no tree limbs moving or see any squirrels in the first hour when you can use the call a little bit before you get up to go somewhere else I only use the call if I've already sat there for a while and seen nothing and yes it does work pretty good I like to use the quarters after I've located squirrels are shot one using the quarters makes the squirrels feel a lot, more when they hear another squirrel eating nuts Annabelle come back out for round 2
squirrel buster distress call brought in my latest kill. It brought 2 in rampantly, took one down. They ran in across a field and one froze up to see wtf I was doing. I did a hail mary and bought it based purely on this vid, so... You at least helped on this kill. Thank you.
Ok video but you're not using the Haydel call right. Is 5 long whistles with a combination of branches hitting the ground at the beginning. Look it up.
I grew up using the haydel's squirrel whistle. I have killed a bunch of fox squirrels with it. Find a small green bush. Shake the bush why using call. I had squirrels run up too me. Good thing they also start barking at it. The other call I like is haydel's ds 85 hand cal 3 in one l. Very nice call too use.. The squirrel calls do work. I carry a 410 alot squirrel hunting.
NOTHING beats the Haydel's Mr. Squirrel" distress whistle.I've sworn by that call for many years. And I do find that they will come running with that call.
This is my first season hunting and I haven’t taken any game so I am probably doing everything wrong. I picked up the squirrel buster and I mix in blowing into it to make distressed squirrel calls. We have a lot of red shouldered and red tail hawks in our area. Every time I get carried away with the distressed calls, I end up seeing a hawk. Sometimes they will circle above. Sometimes they’ll land in a nearby tree. I didn’t know distressed squirrel calls would be so effective at attracting predators. I think that I’m going to stop using them. I feel like they see the hawks and hunker down even more. Same with squirrel barks. They seem to just scare and run off squirrels. I’m going again this weekend and I’m leaving the buster at the house and bringing quarters.
I only use the call if I've been sitting for awhile and see nothing like an hour or more sitting if I don't see anything by then I'll use that call for a little bit and if that don't bring them out I'll move somewhere else that's what I would suggest I will say using the 2/4 really does work it brings a man and make some feel calm want to hear another squirrel eating a nut
old post but I'll still respond... I'm on a farm & need to handle squirrels. Been 30 years now. the TLDR is squirrels only come out very specific times of the day. They rest/sit/chill/sleep in safe zones during the middle of day. They come out once in morning and once before dusk. Each "once" lasts for about 30 - 60 mins, but they will leave as soon as the spot is burnt. "the spot" = where they know food is. If there is too much food they might stay out all day but that is only during harvest times of the year... IF there is plenty of food. They won't come out if the weather is bad(hot or cold). Just listen for birds and animal activity. If the forest sounds normal it will be good. Sometimes the food spot will be burnt before they go out >> meaning >> if there is ANY predator... a "hawk." a "cat." If they know "you" are going to get them or any time they don't feel comfortable they simply will not go out. They stay near their nest in safe zones. Get up at the earliest bit of light and wait 1 hour. Then go to their 'spot' . That is the morning session. For evening it is typically at dusk. Wild squirrels are VERY cautious. They can see you at a distance of 2 large trees and hear you much farther. Don't stare at them. U have to gain their trust. If they see you > be very quiet and start touching plants and pretend you are foraging. DON'T stare at them, just as you would feel weird if some random stranger was looking at you. Look busy... Start touching and smelling plants. Pretend to eat them. and wait... they will come closer when they feel safe. Try and see what they are eating/scavenging for.. the rest is up to you. good luck Same works for wild deer who know not of human hunter. I have had wild deer come up 10 feet of me while I was pretending to eat tree leaves. They copy me when I do this. It's fun ;p U have to act like a grazing animal and not a predator cat crawling all sus like or a loud dog crumpling leaves like a clutz... Squirrels come to me caz I have all the food, but out in the wild >> I would just look for food. Pinecones / acorns / water / very green plants. Thick trees. I wouldn't look for squirrels, I would look for squirrel food and signs of squirrels eating.
You can make the squirrel to come running if you make it think a baby is being taken by a eagle , beat some brush like the sound of wings hitting the brush at the same time use the baby call part with some other squirrel sounds mixed in...
One place I now "hunt" squirrels with a pellet rifle is in a development of very small rental Cottages with a lots of large Oaks and pecan trees. The squirrels do all kind of damage. gnawing holes under eaves of the buildings, building nests in the attics, causing problems like gnawing electrical wiring, even under vehicle hoods. Smother fried squirrel with gravy and homemade biscuits is outstanding.
Mary , you are missing out on some very good tasting meat. Seared, cooked long and slow in a crock pot or baked in an oven with some onions ,bell peppers and chicken broth to keep from drying out . Then serve over mashed potatoes. You will really enjoy that meal.
@@christinamoneyhan5688 I can't eat my little friends but I can understand why someone might. It's good to know that they are eaten and do not just go to waste.
The quarters always seems the cheapest and the best. I've shot a squirrel immeadiately go to quarters and sure enough the others come out and see a dead squirrel and assume their eating now lol. And if that does t work the distress call works great. And I use a 22 mag. Big enough for the larger game like coyotes and have a pistol with me if I get into a bobcat or lion trouble. Amazing how they like that squirrel call
Stealth is always better. Until you're moving to a new spot. Then you can make some noise and see what comes of it. Much better to not be seen or heard.
That's exactly what I tell people don't use the damn call until you set for an hour or so watching and listening and then if you're going to get up and move you might as well go ahead and use the call a little bit to see if anything pops out if not move to the next spot quietly
After 20 years of squirrel hunting, I can tell you that lemon grass method is the best method. Haydel is close but without the rasp, it just doesn't work nearly as well.
Now I know what a spastic, A.D.D. squirrel on meth, with open oral sores sounds like biting into a hot pepper. That PRIMOS call is just good/cheap entertainment. I could see all sorts of fun, sitting on a park bench and wagging that thing at people walking their dogs, cats wandering too close by, or, just in need of a cheap laugh. I need to get me one of these bad boys. I've never squirrel hunted in my life (60 years old)... but, I could take this up, just to get a good laugh out in the woods. I'd bet that'd be a great tool for 'yote busting. My kind of luck, I'd call in a Sasquatch.
Squirrels in the wild make a lot different sounds and they do on your back porch Winter Park and trust me the squirrel Buster works I've killed many limits I'm squirrels with it usually I'll sit for about an hour and if I don't see anything I get to call out and yes it does work trust me especially when you go crazy depending on the time of year you start shaking that thing around the mail squirrels come in Crazy ready to fight
You said that you want to blast them why would you wanna kill a squirrel man it's done nothing to you there actually pretty cool pets I have a family of them they are caring and loving.. Once you get to know them they are the coolest
Just fyi, something I learned. Gray squirrels are a deep woods squirrel, while fox squirrels are a more open woods squirrel. Sometimes their territories overlap.
Gonna start hunting for the first time. I figured I’d start with squirrel. Thanks for the tips.
My first start too. I’m starting with small game too. Keeping the tradition.

That's the best way to make a squirrel want to fight you. Start messing with his nuts LOL
I recently started using a quarter and tapping it on a walnut, really sounds authentic. I do really want to try the squirrel call tho!
@@adeadlyfart13 it's like 16 bucks on Amazon bro
Early season i use the squirrel whistle along with shaking a branch. I also use the squirrel buster.
Back in the old days, squirrel noise making only cost ya a couple nickels.....damn inflation
I used my squirrel call on my back porch and all I got was my nabor staring me down. Yup works good for predictors lol

" Get weird with it" i love it! Advice i will surely use!
I use quarters
Same it works well cuz there are more sounds you can make and it’s easy
Me too
squirrel call is better. i’ve tried both for years and always had better luck with the call
Primos and quarters is what I shall use. What years quarters work best, I don't want to get too weird with it.
Yo yack I’ve been squirrel hunting for 2 years now and the quarters are all I use after watching this video. They are for real the best tool
I keep hearing bout people using quarters, I've wonders if it really worked
Thanks for being honest and practical, it helped me make some decisions.
Yeah I like the distress call. I got weird with mine and located a squirrel.
That's also what I use
I use the same rifle. But for some reason CCI Mini Mags seem to shoot a little more accurately in mine.
@@jerrywise2927 every rifle is different, some work great with one brankd, and don't work with a different one

Pro tip: you can actually take that little side vent out of the squirrel buster and blow it like a whistle for a variety of distress calls.
