    To be more precise, Akrij was diamond 3 (from 2800 to 3200 MMR) for more than 5 YEARS. Since 2018. Hardstuck at the same level for 5 years. And then cyclones come around aaaaand.... He gains more than 2000 MMR in 2 months.

      Cyclones are not even that good. Im guessing he got to GM mostly through cheesing which is not that crazy tbh. I got to masters 1 as protoss with cannon rushing even though im a master 3 Terran primarily because most people don't know how to defend against it properly. Were I to play normal macro games i could never get to M1 with toss, im certain of it.

    This actually makes a ton more sense when you consider that Akrij is Grandmaster in League of Legends. League doesn't require nearly as much APM or multitasking as Starcraft, but it does demand really good control and decision-making. Maybe the build is OP, but I think the bigger thing here is that he found a build that plays to his strengths.

      Exactly this. When I've heard he's only got 1k games in SC2, my first thought was "maybe he's actually talented, but at first couldn't find the opportunity to let that talent flourish". He's now facing other Terran GMs on the ladder, and any one of them with more experience/mechanics/skill should be able to recognize him, execute his build against him, and roflstomp him - but it's actually Zerg that's currently causing him trouble. Akrij is actually good at the game.

      precisely -- he said that he needs vision to plan what to attack in which order. Moreover, the mobility of cyclone and high DPS enable him to snipe precisely the targets that he needs to get the best gradient of power. His friends try the same build order and it doesn't work, precisely because the first 3-4 targets sniped decide if the opponent can recover or not. In other words, decision-making wins. I love SC2 as well, and about halfway through SC2's existence, I made variations of cyclone/SCV rushes that I just called my cyclone rush in replays. It's had several variations because of how the cyclone has changed multiple times over the years, but, no matter the variation or patch, that's always been my best rush! Wow, that's just crazy to see. I have to say that I can play macro games and other builds, too. I'm not a noob or anything, but that's my most successful.

    I think I play with this guy once, in a TvT. It is very difficult to scout into this build since most of the time terran will open with double gas, therefore they will not scv scout and will scout around their base for proxy first. when the time reaper reached his base cyclone will just kill them and we have no information. So unless you just build blind tank you have to be very precise with your reaper to counter it in TvT.

  • @roshango125ab
    @roshango125ab 6 месяцев назад

    I find the cyclone really funny because if you where around in late 2000s, waiting for SC2 to finally drop, you may have watched some of the trailers Blizzard dropped showcasing the SC2 Alpha at the time. In the video showcasing the Terran, they showcased a little unit called the Cobra, a unit with a railgun that did high damage to armored units, but more importantly fired on the move. This unit was eventually removed from the multiplayer during the alpha and made it's way into the Campaign, most of you would recognize it as the Diamondback. This unit didn't make it to the multiplayer because it was extremely difficult to balance. The ability to fire on the move made it easy to micro to the fullest with little effort. If it was overturned it could basically be an unstoppable death machine. If they tried to nerf it to compensate for the ease of use, it would be basically useless. And so I found it very funny when the cyclone was added because it's lock on wasn't exactly like the diamondback/cobra, but the idea was very similar. And so it's no surprise that the cyclone has had such a turbulent balance history.

Research builds and timings for all matchups, and practice constantly. The only time you get hardstuck is when you keep doing the same things over and over and nothing changes.

    While I think this is a rare occurence, it isn't that rare in other games, it is only rare in SC2 becasue the player base is so much lower than many other competetive games thus the sample size is lower as well.
    I float around Diamond in league every season all around, people may say that is where I belong but any time I decide to take the game seriously, I hit the highest ranks and remain there all season. I think there are a lot more cases like that, if you play a game competetively for 10+ years, you are bound to be among the best even if you don't take the game seriously.
    MMR doesn't matter if said people are just not taking the ladder seriously.
    There are also cases like the professional LoL player called Fudge. He was stuck in Platinum for 7+ years and then just made it into the pro scene in 2 years. I am guessing he was the same as me or this guy.
    Conclusion: If you can't hit the highest rank after playing for 10 years when you take the game seriously, you are likely not the smartest, quickest, most sharp tool in the shed and you are likely struggling at other parts of life itself. It is okay tho, get coaching, stop trying to invent builds even the smartest people learn from each other, or just get a new hobby.

    Imagine if in chess, instead of 64 squares it's 262,144 squares (64 x 64 x 64), and instead of 6 unique pieces, there are 66. If you change how the knight moves by 5 squares per turn to make it better and change the rook to lose 10 squares per turn, you would break the current play styles. I'm not surprised at all that someone figures something out a month after the change happens. Newsflash- Terran broke, and no one's complaining because the complainers play Terran.

Thus, I point out the correlation between the patch and use of the featured build, and point out that the sudden rise relative to his entire history of SC2 is probably not a coincidence, especially relative to the amount of time playing SC2 over the years. It is a response with an implication suggesting that it is not, in fact, natural talent that got him to where he is, in response to the original comment. I know exactly what the video is about.

      @@lillian8307 he played what, 1000 games of starcraft 2? From 2018? Let me say this is really far from actually grinding anything. Also sometimes smth just clicks with some build (sc case) or champ (in league). I myself was stuck in gold in league until I picked up tryndamere and got to mid diamond (s3). But friends of mine who were silver-gold couldn't climb with him at all.
      Edit - checked time graph and indeed saying that he was in plat/diamond since 2018 is technically true but doesn't show full picture. And full picture is that he played like 1-7 games/month there and only since middle of last year he actually started to play actively.
