@@dirtydurdensoap sure it’s shout since they released in while back and might still have the license. Shout is re-releasing all their collectors editions on 4K now.

Kind of sad they didn't do an HDR pass. Black and white in HDR looks gorgeous. I'll probably get it during the 1/2 off sale like you said. Totally feel you on "Day" needing a 4k. Hopefully Shout Factory agrees with us. 😆

Definitely need Day in 4K! It’s my favorite film of all time. Also we desperately need Night 90 restoration as well! I love love LOVE Night 90 and would die for a 4K release. (With a half way decent cover this time too? 😂)

Great video as usual, I have the blu ray version, but I've been saving it for special occasion, so I haven't watched it yet, but what looks better in your opinion the Blu Ray or the 4K? because I'm in Ireland and i wanna know if it's worth importing. thanks dude.

    • @RichardDiaz

Thank you Mack! The 4K does have the extra clarity and detail which looks great but it's not a night and day (no pun intended) difference so I'd recommend if you want the 4K see if you can eventually grab it during a sale or something. Luckily it's not limited so it'll be around for a long time.

@@RichardDiaz Thank you for the info, I will have to wait for it to come out in my part of the world because the blu rays will be region A and I'm B, my OCD will not let me pass up the greatest horror film ever made :) thanks again Richard.

I was REALLY surprised to see this film, and the 4K of Blow Out, in BEST BUY! I have never seen Criterion’s for sale in any retailer other than Barnes & Noble. It’s definitely an interesting development..

Especially considering BB seems to be trying to get rid of physical movie and TV releases, like they did with CDs.

Thank you Richard for doing this comparison. I purchased the Criterion bluray late last year. It's one of those half cases where the discs are in plastic but the wrap around sleeve is paper and the whole thing is in a sort of cardboard box with different artwork on the sleeve and the outside box. I was very curious about the 4k. It looks to have the same Mini poster in the bluray. The artwork is on the interior cover. Mine shows the Night of Anubis as work print name. I think Criterion sale is going on now. I believe it started yesterday. Hope you have an excellent week!

We shold make something clear for the expensive labels: Yes, you can put out an expensive 4K release of a classic. But no, if it's not with HDR, it can't be THAT expensive. Very disappointing, especially since it doesn't seem to be communicated clearly pre-release. This is the first time I hear it's SDR only.

They really dropped the ball with the packaging. Just a standard Criterion case when their Blu digipak was so nice. I would be tempted to keep the 4K disc in that. Also disappointed there's no HDR. Will probably just wait for a sale...

Hi, I'm thinking about ordering this title, did you order it through amazon or Criterion? Sometimes these 4K UHD's arrive damaged from both companies.

Many thanks for the review! I concur with the majority that HDR does make a huge difference in a 4K transfer. Psycho is a prime example of a B&W that benefited from HDR.
With a prime 4K Blu Ray transfer, many Blu Ray players can upconvert it to 2160p at 24frps. NOTLD Blu Ray was an awesome transfer on its own.

HDR DEFINITELY MAKES A DIFFERENCE!!! THE PRESENTATION IS EVEN BETTER BECAUSE THE CONTRAST IS BETTER. PRIME EXAMPLES ARE LOGAN, SCHINDLER'S LIST, AND THE RECENT UNIVERSAL MONSTERS BOXSET. Definitely not worth the price. So in Black and white Hdr definitely stands out. What a waste.

I honestly feel ripped off on this release. Criterion dropped the ball on this one. No slipbox, no hdr, incomplete special features ported over. Sadly disappointed.

There are so many problems with this movie (mainly the police scenes that are obviously from wrong times of day to coincide with the story), it's hard for me to enjoy it as much as others seem to. I definitely appreciate it from a historical standpoint and for what they did on such a small budget. I'm still going to buy this 4K, mostly for the extras, but I do think it would've been nice to include the inferior colorized version just so it includes everything.

  • @Earthtime3978
    @Earthtime3978 2 года назад

I have a lot of problems with this release . First off, I’m a big NOTLD fan, so I take anything related to it kind of serious.
This was a big cash grab for Criterion. 4K was already in full swing when the Blu-ray was released. They knew they were going to release a 4K version and waited, bilking the consumer . Despicable!
Next is the issue of packaging. The 4K and blu ray are virtually indistinguishable from each other (outside of a mini 4K narrative on the back). A 4K disc should heavily indicate what it is …. particularly on the front of the jacket! It could have had a cool cardboard sleeve displaying such, especially for what they’re charging, but they didn’t do shit.
And you know I’ll have to by this film even AGAIN because some company will properly release an HDR version. What the hell is wrong with Criterion? This is not a definitive version without HDR, although currently it’s the best the film has looked.
Finally, why the fuck do I need another blu ray copy in with this? There’s no bonus in that! All companies do this and it’s just stupid because 99% of the time the person buying the film is upgrading from blu ray to begin with. That’s my rant and it won’t change a thing …. but it should! :)
PS There’s a German 4K release coming out in November but I’m not sure if the quality is any different. The cover art certainly is with Barbra getting pawed at by ghouls through the boards.
