Excellent video on the features of this brilliant radio - I keep it among my bookmarks for periodic viewing. My S700 is an absolute beast for receiving clear SSB signals, perhaps only rivaled by Eton E1 among portables. Again, thanks for this old post.
Great video, I have had that radio in my closet for years, and I didnt know anything about it until today when I looked for a video about, I also tried Ebay and they sell for about $350.00 used !! Are they worth that much?? thanks
@@TOMAS-lh4er You answered your own question saying they sell for that amount (in excellent condition). Certainly, this model is one of the best portables ever produced.
Great video. I agree with your thoughts on the quality. I've had mine since 1994 and I love its performance. It's starting to show its age now as the whip antenna is a little sticky and the front display light no longer functions (I've put it through its paces!). It's still is my go-to radio for SW listening. I have a YB400 that I used throughout Eastern Europe with an external antenna that functioned well but there is just something special about the 700. Congratulations on the purchase and happy listening!
The antenna on mine was getting a little tough too so I cleaned it with deoxit on a rag, then wiped it down with wd40 on another rag to leave a very thin film on it and it's much better.
Do these run on AC Only [ I have not been able to use Adapter ] OR do I need Rechargeable Batteries to use Adapter - tried adapter from Eton E1 - none have worked ( regardless of setting in battery compartment ).
@@robertscorpio8432 the switch in the battery compartment is only to allow the radio to charge the batteries. You don't need to use rechargeable batteries, and if you use standard batteries then you will need to switch the charge mode to off.
OK- I got my Satellit 700 almost as new as this one and it is a great radio! Thanks for posting your Video because I KNEW to make sure and buy it because of your Vid. For DXing weak signals I can use the Antenna Peaking you demonstrate to filter out hiss and background noise ! A very powerful ,versatile Radio with a lot a features like two powered Stereo Speaker outputs..and great sound AND more sensitive than some Reviews suggest..just as Mike Westphal says. Thanks Mike!
RobertK Scorpio enjoy, it's a fine receiver. also if you haven't yet, get the memo files for it. another nice feature is when you tune in a station and press the red " store" button the radio will search the entire memofile for dup's
I always wanted the 700, easily the best portable Radio then and now probably. Grundig AM sound quality is excellent and FM stereo fantastic. Well built, loads of features I used to yearn for one when they first came out but I think they were about 700 pounds in 96/97. I ended up with the YB 500 that was OK, Grundig sound quality and SSB with clarifier but nothing on the 700. When the 800 came out I was shocked at how bad it was in comparison to the old 700. Great bit of luck copping a brand new old stock set too, how jammy is that you lucky devil. Nice video too. Cheers
Hi Mike, thank you for the review. How is it in comparison with ICF2010 in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, signal/noise ratio, sync and ssb functions? Thank you!
@@azamatkarasaev9933 several comparisons. ( I also own a 2010), the Grundig is MUCH better on SSB, the 2010 only has 100 hz tuning increments whereas the SAT-700 has the fine tuning adjustment and even more significant, the manual gain control, which helps make SSB sound spectacular. The Sony doesn't mute while tuning (big plus for me personally), and I don't believe there's a better radio for sync mode than the ICF-2010. Also, the 2010 has full Longwave coverage whereas the SAT-700 is limited. Audio quality definitely goes to the Grundig, (the audio quality is just gorgeous on all bands and all modes), as does memory capacity (2048 memories on the Grundig). The Grundig has RDS on FM, as well as stereo reception. As for sensitivity, they are both quite equal, however the Grundig does have a preselect tuning function which helps peak signals specific to the current frequency tuned. Filtering on both very good, but I would have to give the edge to the 2010. The 2010 covers the aircraft band, not found on the Grundig. Both radios are impressive and personally if I wanted a communication receiver only, I'd prefer the Sony ICF-2010, but the SAT-700 has so many additional features like that incredible audio quality, stereo FM, RDS, memory capacity, fine tuning for SSB, etc, you would need to choose based on your own specific needs in a radio. One more consideration, the Grundig has eprom memories and will retain all memories even if power is lost, whereas the Sony will default back to factory settings if the memory batteries either deplete or become dislodged (common issue). Lastly, the Grundig does offer onboard charging for nicads, but I can not recommend charging any batteries in a radio. Just never felt it was a good idea.
@@wu2u, thank you for such a quick and detailed response! Very appreciative. I have ICF2010 and it's amazing! I like 700's design and features on board. I'm sure its sound is also very solid and comfortable. My first acquisition ( just a month ago) was Magnavox D2935, whose sound is so pleasant. With Grundig added it will be an exciting company of old school recievers.
@@azamatkarasaev9933 on HF bands holding down the mono button allows you to peak the signal by adjusting the preselector, using the tuning knob. As soon as you tune off frequency the radio defaults back to normal preselect but can be peaked again.
I am new to the SATELITT 700, when I press on/off and then FM there is no sound and says NO RDS(I belive it means I do not read), when press AM all SW,MW,LW work,I have sound. What seems to be a problem?
You may have a technical problem with your radio. The display reading "No RDS" just refers to the superimposed signal that allows the radio to display station information, song titles, etc. Regardless, you should still have audio to any FM station whether or not they are using the RDS system.

When I plug the radio back in the display comes on and the time starts up at 0:00. I have good batteries in the radio and they have no effect when I disconnect from AC power. Is there a CMOS Btry in the radio that can be replaced? Thank you
Hmm, not sure. I do have a friend that can work on these types of radios. He is an engineer and specializes in solid state gear. if you give me your email or cell # I will give you his information.
I thought I read that there is a backup battery in the radio and is charged while plugged in. Perhaps it has failed. The back cover comes off with just the 4 starpoint screws removed. Might be able to get a look on the exposed board?
This radio sounds a lot better than the Tecsun PL-880, 990x and S8800 on SSB, Tecsun DSP is a disaster. The Sangean ATS-909 X2 sounds a lot better than the Tecsun Radios on SSB and ECSS works great on it, impossible on the Tecsuns and in my opinion ECSS is essential for the serious DX'er so you need a radio with good sounding SSB.
