The key question of "when does a man become a monster?" can apply to either Odysseus or the baby. It could either ask if Odysseus killing a baby to protect his family makes him a monster, or if being foretold to take vengeance on Odysseus' family makes the baby functionally a monster at this point if there's no way to avoid him doing it other than slaying him. First time I experienced act one it was just through the soundtrack and I wasn't previously aware of that part of the mythology so I wasn't necessarily sure if he'd done it or not, and there are certain aspects of the story which can be interpreted different ways depending on whether or not the listener believes he did it. I love that Odysseus first tries to stab the baby, but can’t. He ends up opting to drop him, leaving it mostly up to gravity. Maybe because Zeus is the god of the sky, he feels like it puts some blame on the gods
and probably also because he can’t physically handle being the one to take the kids life - the guilt would be immeasurable, seeing the bloodied baby and knowing that it was by his hand. at least by dropping him, he can look away, and he doesn’t have to *see* the death on his hands - he can avoid it. even if the guilt will never leave him, he doesn’t have to live with the memory of the babies cries as he tears it apart, and the look of his bloodied hands.
What good was having the first instinct if he overruled it? I will constantly aver that he chose wrong here. Stupid Greek gods throwing out ultimatums when there ARE other options-like he actually COULD have raised the baby as his own. I think there will never be a legitimate reason to harm a child.

Zeus, whose own wife couldn’t trust him, could totally have lied about the future for his own entertainment. He’s not even a prophet himself nor god of time or future or war. What stake or say does he have in any of this? Anyway, he did lie about Odysseus having blood on his hands no matter which choice he made. If someone does wrong, the blame lies with them alone. If the child lives and becomes a vengeful man and attacks Ithaca, it is not Odysseus attacking Ithaca. Instead, Odysseus has projected an innocent baby and has clean hands in that regard. But murdering an infant-yeah, that’s all on him. Not even Zeus can take the blame for it, because he introduced the choice to Odysseus, but O. chose to do the violent act himself. What he did to the baby in that moment was wrong and unjust.

It's so beautiful. I love how much of the focus is on the infant. When you're listening to the song with no visual input, it's easy to forget what Odysseus is truly doing but the constant images of the child blinking up at Odysseus and the things around him remind you that he was just an innocent infant that hasn't done anything yet. Heartbreaking.
The enemy that won't run like nothing he ever fought, just a pitiful little baby.. it gets to me to. Especially him pleading for the Gods to change their minds.

A thing to sadly remember is that Greeks in ancient times had very strong blood debts. A hint of that was the line; ‘Neo, avenge your father, slay the brothers of Hector’ Neo was Neoptolemus, son of Achilles, who kills a large number of Trojan royal sons but actually fails to avenge Achilles as Paris was slain by Philoctetes, a fellow archer like himself and Odysseus. Sorry, tangent, basically if the child survived he would have been honorbound to kill those that destroyed his family. Even if raised by one of them, as the gods said.

the fact he takes off the helmet for pleading not to kill the baby, then all through just a man, but puts it back on to actually do it always gets me. The difference in the man in him and the soldier in him, visually depicted - absolutely brilliant choice of visual representation! Even as he considers the situation, he is talking to the helmet, to the warrior in himself.
It's especially good as a reference to the famous scene in the Iliad where Hector removes his helmet because it scared his child, the same child now confronted with that same fearful image in his last moments...
If you feel sad about Astyanax (the baby) dying, don't worry, because a lot of Medieval writers did too. And they wrote fanfic to cope! He's the founder of France according to one of them so I think he lived a pretty good life! (Yes I will be believing this version and nobody can convince it isn't canon. CURSE YOU GIGI FOR MAKING ME ATTACHED TO THIS ADORABLE LITTLE BEAN WITH HOW YOU DRAW HIM.)
The French even used him as an excuse for some massacres of their own, namely the Fourth Crusade where they justified sacking Constantinople by saying it's payback for the Trojan War. So Astyanax *does* grow up to be the monster that destroys Odysseus's home and family.

The contrast in Just a Man between Odysseus cradling and gently smiling at the baby, and picking him up by the blanket and keeping him at arms length to the very end? As if to distance himself from what he's about to do? Breaks me.
kinda seems like alsp Abraham and issac, considering God tells him to stab him as a test to prove his faith (he didnt get killed) difference is in greek, there are multiple god, while in abrahamic faiths there 1 god who controls everything along with being the creator
Just gotta say I love all your depictions of all the other greek heroes at troy, Menelaus looks like a true spartan king. Agamemnon being just a big guy with a big shield fits his big ego. Neo's blood soaked armor and murderous eyes are perfect for how he was portrayed. Little Ajax is also great, I love him with the big smile on his face. Fun fact according to some sources it was actually Neo who yeeted little baby Astyanax off the walls of Troy.
Whoever does the deed, the murder of Astyanax is usually portrayed as Odysseus's plan. He's the only one genre-savvy enough to realize that sons avenging their fathers is a thing the gods favor and will almost certainly happen if they leave him alive. I find it very interesting that Epic goes for the version of the story that paints Odysseus as the most cruel, the one in which he drops the boy off the wall himself, but absolves him of responsibility for coming up with the idea in the first place.
Can we all just appreciate how smoother and faster the transitions are in Gigi’s more recent animatics. I really love how you can see Gigi’s growth and slight art style change from The horse and the infant-Suffering

Probably not intentional, but I like how here, when everything goes dark, Odysseus sees Penelope and Telemachus. Where as in The Underworld, we get "All I hear are screams every time I dare to close my eyes". Almost like he used to see his family when he closed his eyes, but they got temporarily overshadowed by his guilt. Bit of a stretch but it works for me.

I think the tree growing from the crib references Penelope and Odysseus’ bed, which have an olive tree. Fun fact about this! When Odysseus came back to Ithaca, Penelope didn’t believe that it was him so she said she moved the bed, Odysseus went on to go on a rant in incredulity on HOW she moved it because it was literally connected to an olive tree, search it up, it’s true

The detail that Ody took his helmet off because the baby, Astynanax (definitely didn’t spell that right), is afraid of battle helmets according to mythology. Ouch.
The seamless transition works so well here, probably since it’s basically the entire Troy part of the Troy saga, so it feels like a full episode. Also I can’t put my finger on exactly why but the Ody/Zeus duet section in the newer version sounds so much better (same with the buildup of “when does a ripple become a tidal wave,” thanks to that instrumental buildup). Also the confirmation that he dropped the baby?? I’m assuming that’s new but whew it’s so good
The Ody/Zeus duet sounds better cause you can actually hear Zeus this time, I had to get captions and a lyric website to find out what he was saying but now you can hear him loud and clear
“Little Ajax will stay back.” I love how he called him little Ajax because in the Trojan war he was only about 17 at the time and probably the youngest on the horse at the time. Also I love how Jorge made sure to name names of the actual people who were there and what they did. I just love that little detail😭❤

In the Dictionary of myths and cultural traditions it is written under Astyanax: "Son of Hector and Andromache, after the capture of Troy, thrown from the city walls by Odysseus or Neoptolemus, so that the royal dynasty could not be reborn." So it really depends where you read

I very much like the start of the song. It captures the story in an epic tone that I don't think anyone has been able to capture in any discussion, capturing that awesome military move. And then it flawlessly transitions into the tragedy. And the rough, terrible choices the ancients had to make.
I think you have a hit! My daughter heard of this in her English class in college. She came home this weekend and wanted to show us ( her parents). My favorite little detail in this song is _how_ Zeus gives Ody this vision. Any time Athena enters Odysseus's mind, she announces herself before they enter that mindscape. (Ex. "Have ypu forgotten the lessons I taught you?" "Athena!" Then you hear the ticking showing theyve entered Odys mind). But here, Odysseus expresses pain and then is like _wtf where am i?_ before Zeus announces himself. Zeus is a king and a rapist and he does not ask permission, so he did not ask permission before entering Odys mind. I love that Jorge shows us, the audience, Zeus personality even with small moments like this.
This! I love the details put into Zeus and the other gods. Stuff like that is also why a big party of me believes that if Odysseus had disobeyed it 100% would have turned out how Zeus told him it would. Not because it was a preordained thing, but because Zeus (being who he is) would have MADE SURE. As a punishment for disobedience.

This is such a niche thing to say but, I loved your 'Mystery of Love' animation about the song of Achilles. Then coming into the EPIC fandom and watching you animate Neo - Achilles' son, looking so much like him, Im not kidding, it LITERALLY KILLED MY HEART. You're so talented and amazing with your art. Every small detail and focus you have tying in stories and characters effortlessly is impressive. You probably get this all the time but you're a profound artist!

Just a Man is a song that will forever have that place in my heart. You did a wonderful job with the animation, it's the best I've come across! The emotions are conveyed so well, I don't think they could've been done better.
listening to these songs after other there are little details you notice like the "please dont make me do this dont make me do this" used in the horse and infant comes back in thunder bringer "choose you or your crew...choose...someones gotta die today and you will have he final say...please dont make me do this dont make me do this" and same song "Penelope and telemacus" in the song monster that same line is used "i must get back to see penelope and telemacus" its how the names are said and also the monster in monster is same as in just a man where he sees his own inner reflection as the monster

This was amazing, I really like how you were able to morph the tree into a skull. Also the last scene with just showing the hand letting go in the darkness was really powerful. Everything about this was great!

Just gotta say I love all your depictions of all the other greek heroes at troy, Menelaus looks like a true spartan king. Agamemnon being just a big guy with a big shield fits his big ego. Neo's blood soaked armor and murderous eyes are perfect for how he was portrayed. Little Ajax is also great, I love him with the big smile on his face.
Fun fact according to some sources it was actually Neo who yeeted little baby Astyanax off the walls of Troy.
Some also say Philocetes, the guy who killed Paris after Paris killed Achilles, was the one playing "Toss the Toddler."
Also, Little Ajax wasn't a great guy and pissed off both Athena and Poseidon for what he did to Cassandra

Whoever does the deed, the murder of Astyanax is usually portrayed as Odysseus's plan. He's the only one genre-savvy enough to realize that sons avenging their fathers is a thing the gods favor and will almost certainly happen if they leave him alive. I find it very interesting that Epic goes for the version of the story that paints Odysseus as the most cruel, the one in which he drops the boy off the wall himself, but absolves him of responsibility for coming up with the idea in the first place.
Can we all just appreciate how smoother and faster the transitions are in Gigi’s more recent animatics. I really love how you can see Gigi’s growth and slight art style change from The horse and the infant-Suffering

Probably not intentional, but I like how here, when everything goes dark, Odysseus sees Penelope and Telemachus. Where as in The Underworld, we get "All I hear are screams every time I dare to close my eyes". Almost like he used to see his family when he closed his eyes, but they got temporarily overshadowed by his guilt.

The detail that Ody took his helmet off because the baby, Astynanax (definitely didn’t spell that right), is afraid of battle helmets according to mythology. Ouch.
The seamless transition works so well here, probably since it’s basically the entire Troy part of the Troy saga, so it feels like a full episode. Also I can’t put my finger on exactly why but the Ody/Zeus duet section in the newer version sounds so much better (same with the buildup of “when does a ripple become a tidal wave,” thanks to that instrumental buildup). Also the confirmation that he dropped the baby?? I’m assuming that’s new but whew it’s so good
The baby being dropped was always a part of epic Canon, but it wasn't in the old animatic for just a man

It's always a joy to relive a song with a new animatic
My favorite little detail in this song is _how_ Zeus gives Ody this vision. Any time Athena enters Odysseus's mind, she announces herself before they enter that mindscape. (Ex. "Have ypu forgotten the lessons I taught you?" "Athena!" Then you hear the ticking showing theyve entered Odys mind). But here, Odysseus expresses pain and then is like _wtf where am i?_ before Zeus announces himself. Zeus is a king and a rapist and he does not ask permission, so he did not ask permission before entering Odys mind. I love that Jorge shows us, the audience, Zeus personality even with small moments like this.
This! I love the details put into Zeus and the other gods.
Stuff like that is also why a big party of me believes that if Odysseus had disobeyed it 100% would have turned out how Zeus told him it would. Not because it was a preordained thing, but because Zeus (being who he is) would have MADE SURE. As a punishment for disobedience.

listening to these songs after other there are little details you notice like the "please dont make me do this dont make me do this" used in the horse and infant comes back in thunder bringer "choose you or your crew...choose...someones gotta die today and you will have he final say...please dont make me do this dont make me do this" and same song "Penelope and telemacus" in the song monster that same line is used "i must get back to see penelope and telemacus" its how the names are said and also the monster in monster is same as in just a man where he sees his own inner reflection as the monster
