Update: Mercante had replied that she was perfectly okay if anyone to contact her family. Someone bought a domain name of her sister's name and contacted her sister about what Mercante has been doing, and is using the website to show the receipts of what Mercante has been doing (including all Twitter posts she's posted and then deleted). Now, Mercante is saying it's "not cool" to dox people. She's a hypocrite. It's okay for her to do it to Smash JT, but when it's done to her, it's "not cool." (rolls eyes)
Additional Edit: I'm saying that it was right to do unto her what was done until Smash JT. Two wrongs don't make a right. But, she drew first blood. And what goes around comes around. Like I said, I'm not saying it's right, nor do I agree with it, but if you say something stupid like, "You can contact my family, I'm okay with it", expect someone to take you up on the offer. Imagine she pull something like she did and something bad happened to the doxed person. Then the situation becomes worse. That’s what Julyvis warning about. You sue Kotaku and their lawyers would tell management that the best solution is to fire Mercante to avoid litigation and loss. Or suffer financial consequences. And you sue her to make her realize that her actions have consequences. If she goes full delusional and acts stupid that is further evidence to show the judge that she is mentally unstable and a danger to the community and herself. This is to prevent a bigger tragedy. And a warning to the rest of the Whisper Network that this type of behavior will NOT be tolerated.

About the Alyssa Mercante/SmashJT thing, heres what I think about it: I miss the days when people had much thicker skin to stand on their own. Instead of homewrecking their opponents lives and/or careers. They are not “victorious” and neither is it considered “a gotcha” moment. This is an act of a very uneducated, uninformed, unhinged, cant-think-for-themselves “YES people” that should never be taken seriously anymore, the same goes for their so-called virtues. Going after your opponent’s family clearly means YOU’VE ALREADY LOST the argument. You made it personal, and you have made it very disingenuous enough to be called a CLOWN by the internet.
Exactly. People put way, way too much stock into other people's opinions about them while making whatever they're defending apart of themselves, leading to people to take criticisms about what they're defending as criticisms of themselves. It wastes alot of energy and emotions for nothing.
In my belief, the only opinion that you should put major stock in, that opinion that cause strong emotions, are those of your SO and your family and of course your own. Any other person's opinion only matters as much as you let it. So put stock into the opinions that can make you better or that of friends or other people you care about. Also put stock into your own. If you don't like something about yourself, change it to be better, to how you want it to be. The opinions that have little value to you, the ones that cause strong emotion and come from strangers or non-family or friends, should just be discarded. These people are strangers. Odds are you will never see them again so who cares what they think of you. They are also probably not thinking about you anymore after the interaction, so this goes doubly so.
People also really need to stop taking criticisms of things they like as criticisms of themselves. Everybody makes everything so personal nowadays. There's hardly any objectivity in a lot of online discussions, especially about entertainment like tv or videogames as well as politics. if people have valid objective criticisms, then listen to it and be willing to change your argument or come back with another valid objective criticisms but don't take it like they insulted or threatened your mom or SO. It gets so tiring having debates online because it always devolves into stuff like this. Granted this is mostly online. Rarely have I seen debates in real life devolve into this sort of stuff. I think maybe it has to do with not seeing the non-verbal body language.

I'm not normally a litigious person...but it's time to start taking their money by force. Start getting lawyers involved. Start costing these crap companies money they can't afford.
The problem with that is lawyers cost money and the companies likely have more cash to dump into legal teams than we do. Getting all of us to do some kind of class action is like herding cats. I think ultimately the way this problem gets sorted out will be much more primitive and scary.

When Jared Leto had “damaged” tattooed on his forehead for the role of Joker, they were appealing to the Alyssa Mercante demographic.
They are used to being given an enormous amount of leeway by everyone because of their beliefs and the upper-middle-class circles they grew up in; they assume that they can make any destructive attempt at causing immeasurable damage to anyone who they decide they don't like and the consequences can never and will never get back to them in any meaningful way because that would be 'oppressive'. We are dealing with the result of a profoundly weak class of people growing up in a society that asked nothing of them, gave them everything, and told them if anyone did the opposite of either, they were evil, and now we live with the consequences, and the lives these people have destroyed along the way are of zero consideration or value to the people who we are discussing.
If you ever hang around a lawyers office, you'll this type of stuff happening IRL. Its been going on since the 90' s by my witness, and since the 1500's if Chaucer and Shakespeare are to be believed.
