    Good news! I finally built the rack this past weekend and it turned out great! I freakin love it! I really appreciate you posting this vid. Saved me a ton of money. I built this for under $50 in 3 days. I built mine with a 30 degree angle as it fit my setup better this way.
    Supplies I used:
    - (3) 1 x 3 8' Pine Quality Board
    - (1) 1 x 2 8' Pine Quality Board
    - (1) 1 x 4 6' Pine Quality Board
    - 2.5 cans of flat black spray paint
    - 1 box of 1 5/8" course drywall screws (Used to build the rack)
    - 1 box of 1" drywall screws (Used to install gear)
    - 1 box of flat washers
    I pre-cut all of the wood, pre-drilled every hole, spray painted everything flat black, and used a skills saw to cut everything including the 30 degree angled boards.
    The video explains most of it but I had to figure out a few things on my own. If anyone has any additional questions please let me know. I'll probably do a small vid of mine at some point. Rock on! 🤘

    So this video doesn't explain how to make these -- it explains "how HE made these" -- missing some key information to consider this a tutorial video. Here is the break down of board lengths and quantity you need:
    A) QTY 2 - 1x3 cut to 19.31" with 25 degree angles on each end as a parallelogram (angled top boards)
    B) QTY 4 - 1x3 cut to 22.5" length (horizontal face and back boards)
    C) QTY 2 - 1x3 cut to 10" length (vertical face boards)
    D) QTY 2 - 1x2 cut to 23.25" length with one side with 25 degree angle (back vertical boards (he calls them feet)
    E) QTY 2 - 1x3 cut to 17.5" (bottom side boards that go front to back to make the rectangular base with 2x B)
    F) QTY 2 - 1x2 cut to 18.25" (rest on top of bottom side boards (E) to make it possible to recess the wheels ( I bought 1.5" wheels so didn't end up needing these)
    G) QTY 2 - 1x3 cut to 21" (go from side to side between the side panels (E) to make platforms to screw the wheels into)
    Took me a day or two to build including the time to pause and go buy different tools that I didn't have to pull it off.
    Highly recommend a kreg pocket hole jig to do some of the joins of angled top boards (A boards to B boards) and the faceboards that connect top to bottom (C boards to B boards.
    Good luck should you decide to take it on!

    Nice work! I build my racks out of wood too! I prefer the look/weight to other materials. However, I will disagree with you on one point I would always use rack rails. While I agree that most modern audio production gear - audio interfaces, headphone amps, patch panels, etc - is pretty light so you can 'get away with' not using rack rails there definitely a limit.
    For example if you are using anything with some 'real weight' to it (some of that vintage kit is heavy) or you are switching gear out regularly I would always, always, always use rack rails. For one thing it spreads the weight across more than four pieces of fixing hardware, secondly it means you won't damage the wood if you are moving components about/swapping out kit in your setup and thirdly (this may sound weird) the rack rails add strength to the rack's 'carcass' and can guard against warping.

    • @_EightySix
      @_EightySix Год назад

      I can't understand someone with that skill going through all that effort putting together and building those racks and not using rack rails?? It's odd. Those holes will get worn out quickly, like maybe you could swap a unit in and out of a spot one time each. Even actual rack rail holes get worn out after a while.

    • @PhillipHilton
      @PhillipHilton Год назад +1

      @@_EightySix I couldn't agree more. Rack rail kits aren't crazy expensive and make racks last a lot longer. He's done a beautiful job here with these frames except for not including rails.

    Great project for all of us who can’t afford to buy racks. It would be nice if you could supply the lengths of each board instead of just the overall dimensions. The top and bottoms obviously are the same rectangular size but how did you determine the slanted boards sizes?

    I have a very small studio here in the UK and I was very nervous for you when I saw all the jack and XLR's hanging down with the weight of the cable trying to pull them out . It's very difficult to find the one cable that's just loose - not quite right out - in the middle of a session. I have made sure that all cables have some king of mechanical retainer or just lift the cable and support it somewhere to the side to avoid this situation.

    I don't understand not using rack rails. If you ever listen to Glenn Fricker and get rid of the Klark Teknik EQ; rack rails would make it easier to swap it out for something that doesn't suck.
    I am planning on building a rack. I plan on using rack rails. That way if I decide to switch things up it will easier.

    • @TrueSoundTV
      @TrueSoundTV  3 года назад

      This video came out over a year BEFORE Glenn Fricker did that video, I got rid of them anyways. There’s essentially no difference in using or not using rack rails. I don’t like rack rails so I didn’t use them. If you like them, use them! There’s screws for both, you have to take them out and then put them back for both

    Thanks for sharing. The studio looks nice. I was just thinking building a studio rack with this kind of wood to have only the structure. I'm still hesitating about the shape anyway. Maybe something straight with a panel on the top to put the monitor speakers.
    I'm wondering, the gears seems very condensed. Especially for the amplifiers and power supply. Isn't it risky? On my manual amplifier (Yamaha) they recommend to put empty space above.

  • @spike3505
    @spike3505 5 лет назад

    Hey Weezna, I found your channel by pure chance and what a fantastic find it has been. Mounting your gear straight onto the wood will give the mounting tabs support that the metal mounting strips doesn't give and will prevent the mounting tab holes being stretched and warped. I'm loving the "floating on air" look as well. It looks like I've got a couple of hours of viewing ahead of me so that i can catch up. A great channel. Sub'd.

    I'm counting 11 rack units inside of the wheeled racks, is that correct? Where 1 rack unit = 1.75 inches, and 11 rack units equals 19.25 inches... A tad confused, b/c it looks like your depth is a tad short at 19 inches, did you shave off .25 inches? And is that why you are not using the extra space at the top, the 11th Rack unit?
