Is nobody going to acknowledge how hard Spies ran 😅?
Or even how far offside BOD was
I was about to say the same thing. Jamie Roberts got BOUNCED!
If you watch the rest of this game from this moment: Dannie Russouw is replaced by Heindrick Brussow, who comes on and single handedly wins the game. 2 turnovers, monster tackle on Shane Williams, and the pass to Jacque Fourie in the corner!
I think this only shocked the Lions fans, never heard anyone other than them talking about it.
Lol. Francois Steyn talked about the brutality of the match, and of this tackle specifically, quite recently.
David Hughes Where’s the video or article where Francois Steyn said that? Even a Link to it would be great
you're shocked enough to be commenting here
@@croissants1280 I watched this video wondering what they were talking about and I still don't remember anyone from these parts "shocked"

He also touches on the Adam Jones clear-out and on how special the Lions tests are.
I know we have to do this a lot, but i'd just like to apologise for Stuart Barnes and the generally over-the-top and biast Sky commentry. The BBC guys tend to be a lot more fair, though i know there are very few that are totally unbiased.
Everybody talking shit about that Rossouw-O'Driscoll clash, but nobody says a single damn word on Spies' massive hit on Roberts just seconds before at 0:07. Pierre just sent him flying right back to Wales, man.
Totally legal.
This video highlights the question of whether O'Driscoll's hit was legal, the Spies hit (totally legal) isn't relevant.
He trucked the shit out of Roberts.
They won’t because sa don’t say a word of their own mistakes, but they always want to tell you the other team mistakes. Almost every sa fan is the same that’s why i don’t support this shithole place, they are a bunch of bad losers.
Talking about brain o drisscoll tackle not spies on roberts
If danie russouw tackled O’Driscoll like that the commentators would have been outraged and called for a card
Cry me a fucking river..he fucked him end of.. get off the pitch
@@cormac2515 true pommie😂😂😂
@@andrieslategan4139 I could understand it being given both ways, but I think the referee got it right.
Of course it was terrible technique, every kid you teach rugby to, you tell them if they tackle like that they will get hurt; And of course he did. It was a clash of heads, which is really unusual in rugby. The real problem for the Ref is most of the impetus comes from Russou, he drops his head and runs into O'Driscoll. From Roussou catching the ball to the hit is about 3/10 of a second, maybe less. Roussou is providing most of the momentum. I'm just not sure what O'Driscoll, is supposed to do to avoid the collision in that situation, or how it would have made any difference. If anything the dangerous play is Roussou, but he isn't doing anything really illegal, and I'm not sure he had much time to react either.
I think this was just one of those things, but I don't think lauding the challenge is the thing to do. I bet both of them wouldn't do it again if they had the choice.
@@TheToledoTrumpton not saying any of this is not true, just saying the commentators would have had stark differences in their commentary if it were russouw on O’Driscoll
@@andrieslategan4139 Oh yeah, I'll give you that for sure, but lets just agree the Aussies would have been worse.
Well he concussed himself as well with this hit. Next move Habana ran right past him and scored because he didn’t know where he was. He then left the field 5 minutes later. Also about 12 Lions left the stadium in an ambulance after the test, so I wouldn’t say the Boks were shocked by the physicality.
Well aren’t you just a bundle of joy !

turn the tables around and it would have been outrage. I really cannot stand the biased comments from our commentators.
I take it you're a South African? The commentators were Sky Sports commentators from the UK, hence the bias.
It was absolutely disgusting how biased they were
Outright for a head clash?
They weren't our commetators thankfully.
Biased? They mentioned numerous times that the tackle was illegal and should have been carded...what more do you want? For a nation of self-proclaimed hard men and given the way you all brag about the 'Bomb Squad' you'd think you'd have thick enough skin to handle it...obviously not.
If that was a Samoan, the commentators would say it should be a red card...
If he was Samoan the other player would have died
used to be refered to as a coconut tackle
And the commentary condoning it, is aweful, I would love to have seen there faces after they lost
Ye u
Absolutely, I watched this game recently.
The Pom commentary was pretty bad to listen to. Amazing how the 2021 lions tour will once again be to the world champions.
@@TheTruthDon yeah honestly I love the concept of the lions, everyone I know of loves it when they tour with there fans, this commentary though made alot of people annoyed
VaaaughN And I have watched many a match on tv down under and it’s just as bad!
You're so right, I extend that to all English speaking northern hemisphere commentators in general, except the Americans and Canadians. I once watched a game where Fiji tied Wales. The Welsh commentators were bleating in distress. It was both gratifying (because I'm a Fiji fan) and hard to watch at the same time.
(edit: I just noticed that I used "bleating" while referring to the Welsh commentators. I'm gonna leave it in")
You know what shocked English Rugby? The 2019 RWC final (and also the 2007 RWC final).
To say it shocked South African rugby is absolutely delusional, if it was so shocked they wouldn't have won the match, if anything the fact that it was so illegal fired them up
And yes it did. The Lions were in control up until that point. And then The Boks bounced back and won that Test. In fact the boks were absolutely brutal after that tackle

I have never heard him praise any South African players and yet the great Daniel Gerber would have taught him a thing or two.
Off sides and high! Great tackle
It wasn't high, the illegal aspect was because he didn't wrap the arm. This was many years before the current safety measures were introduced.
Odriscoll inventing a new offside line.
Lions could not hang on, and let it slip. The Boks was just to strong over 80 Minutes. It was a great test match.
From the footage, it looked like accidental head collision to me.
Not with the arm so high - above shoulder height. With today's laws could have been a red card.
@@Emmanuel-Power they clash heads but his arm was high was it wasnt a head clash? gawd
To wrap your arms around a guy that size you have to get in close, that is when heads get in the way. Nothing illegal about the challenge.
It was Justin. O'Driscoll was being perhaps a bit stupid but it wasn't a deliberate no-arms shoulder to the head tackle. If people wanted to point out that he was offside and running across the field in a way likely to lead to this outcome, then fair play. They prefer to be outraged and claim that he was trying to hurt the other guy even though he was hurt just as badly.
I seem to recall brussow came on and had a blinder
"That is leadership of a different kind from a very fine player." You should lose your job for saying that. What if other players start "leading"? Players like Eben Etzebeth clocking that annoying Owen Farrel by the neck? It would be an outrage. Illegal tackles are illegal for a reason and no one should be allowed to encourage it, most definitely not a commentator on national TV.
What is your opinion on Bakkies Botha?
@@stallthedigger2599 Well I didn't quite see him in the video but he's probably one of the toughest guys that ever played. Definitely a solid defender and made the South African lineouts and scrum's quite dominant.
However my admiration for him does not mean I defend his one hit against Richie Mcgaw that he got suspended for. Further than that he didn't have a lot of simlar moments. However if I saw him break the rules I'd call it out as I just did. Not encourage it.
That's why these commentators should check what they say. They should not encourage illegal play.
Joos Engelbrecht He didn’t call it leadership because of the high shot. It’s because it’s a smaller player on a bigger player. Body on the line type of tackle. I highly doubt the intent was to go high and clock him. I believe he was going in to make an impact.
This is a fine tackle, they just clashed heads. The tackle of Spies before was nearly identical except Roberts bounced off.
Hard committed tackling and heart should always be encouraged, what the hell game do you think this is?
@@7dayspking His shoulder went over Dannies shoulder. What happens next? Momentum takes it to the head. That's high. That's illegal. If you watch the slow mo you'll notice Brian jumping into the tackle. That's illegal.
How is there not even 1 comment on Spies run? Like whatever about the double head knock, what a run that was from a number 8.
O'Driscoll could not shock a wet dream- he and the Lions got hammered- again.
I love watching rugby, but it's a seriously weird sport. In my 20s, I socialised a fair bit with two former Harlequins players who had both retired from the game early due to injury; one walked with a permanent limp. They said (I have no idea if it was - or indeed is - true) that about one in four rugby players ended their careers with a permanent injury. Now we're seeing lots of high profile dementia cases involving players of that period (70s and 80s). Sadly, I doubt if today's players will turn out to be immune to this when they reach late middle-age or early old-age. Something needs to be done, but heaven only knows what. It's rather hard to believe something akin to touch-rugby will ever catch on, and it would be a great shame if the sport as we know and love it simply disappeared.
Off-sides. no arms in a high tackle and watch Habana burn his ass in the set move when the Boks score...Swing low...sweet cheerio!!
Commentator : O'Driscoll levelled Danie Rossouw there
Meanwhile O'Driscoll is levelled... by Danie Rossouw
Rossouw lost the collision and got smashed by a much smaller man, head clash or not. Just accept it.
@@decekfrokfr3mdx Illegally mind you. I love how the commentators praise O'Driscoll for his inability to make a good tackle. What a joke!
You can see O'Driscoll asking Rob Kearney "what happened there?" and Kearney telling him. Nuts how different Rugby was only a few years ago.
Did anyone notice how far off side he was? He never got back. Morris thought it was done and dusted. Lol
He was onside based on the rules at the time
I felt that from the kitchen table
Odriscoll led with his head first, hahahahaha hardly a tackle let alone a good one. 😂😂😂
You always lead with the when you commit, he just came in at the wrong angle. If he hadn't been knocked down by the tackle it would have been a great tackle.
Triggered. Go back to eye gouging players when you cant handle physicality
🙈 laughable comment
Yet, we shocked the world when we won the series.
Funny how this needs to be shown as a Lions highlight. In the greater scheme of things this did not really matter because we won that tour.
0:09 I think something bounced off Spies!
O'Driscoll is the greatest rugby player of our generation not even up for debate

Sure bud

More of a collision than a tackle.
When both guys get knocked out that's inevitable, like to see anyone try and complete a tackle while they're unconscious.
@Aldo Bonaso It happens if you're committing to your tackles. This isn't a game of chess, you don't get to plan out your move 5 minutes in advance.
That's just the type of jingoistic "expert" commentary we can do without in RU. It's an important game of rugby but not a war to be won at any price.

Can't wait for the next lions tour...!
Mr. B O’Driscoll isn’t a Pom. He’s a full blooded Irishman that played for the Lions. And I seem to remember The Irish ☘️ team giving South Africa a right old lesson on how to play rugby, on South African soil in recent years gone by... 😉
Anyway, huge respect to SA, deserved World Cup winners last year. Well done and congratulations, from an Irishman......👍.
For me this is the moment when the Lions started visibly losing their heads in this match, they were ahead they didn't need this at all at this stage. 20 minutes later another Irishman lost his head too and lost the series for the Lions.
Superb.
"brilliant tackle"
Jesus christ no. It was awful.
I agree it was shocking.
They quickly went from "That was illegal and you never want to see that" to "that was brilliant play" then back to "illegal, dangerous and should have been a penalty". It was a poor tackle or attempt at a tackle and a complete lack of sportsmanship from the commentators. Not sure if it had intent from BOD, maybe or maybe it was poor technique and a bit of misfortune for timing. It would rightly get marching orders now.
You know it's a bad tackle when both players get hurt
the commentator even called it - penalty at 0:18

I live how the 1st commentator tries to get them to comment in tbe face that he clearly believes it should've been a card, barnes gives some inspiration b/s before hinting it should be a pen, but dowie just strap up shoots: illegal or not...
If anything it was a clumsy challenge. We couldn't see O'Driscoll's left arm, but his right arm was all the way round the Boks players back at the time of impact.
Didn't look malicious or intentional, so a mild rebuke from the ref was the most S Africa could have really hoped for.

obviously not a legal tackle. However it's frustrating because we saw southern hemisphere players doing this all the time and not getting penalised until the last year or two. a lot of bias in the comments section naturally. Yes is was surprising at the time for some in SA Danie was hard as nails and it was unusual to see that although in a long career of hard hitting you're also gonna get some back. Was the tackle illegal..i don't think so. if you look at the replay frame by frame, two hands were almost wrapped around though the heads clattered together milliseconds before. maybe a timing and technique issue, understandable when you're giving it all, tired, yet still desperately trying to defend at all costs. great series great players!

WOW the commentary.
The commentators aren't wrong... Except for the part when they say legal not legal it was a great tackle. It wasn't a legal tackle... But I agree it is the way you want a player to approach a tackle and that is to incur a certain level of pain... So opposition don't think they can run ball at you all day without feeling it.

In the end BOD did good than harm to Boks, as he effectively introduced Heinrich Brüssow far earlier than what would have been.
Clumsy as opposed to malicious.
How did this game end?
SOUTH AFRICA won the match and the series
Jean Smit exactly - it was an illegal tackle and from memory Brussow came on and turned the game
Rugby used to be rough and tough,, all handbags now. South Africa do as much illegal stuff on a rugby field as any team, did plenty of stuff in that test series. Guaranteed to be plenty more in 2021 Lions tour.

Next time i run into a wall head first being drunk....we should all yell out...good tackle!!!
Watching it all again slowly it looks like O'D is watching the ball so intently he's not realised how close by Roussouw actually is. In fact he may have been anticipating an interception on a long pass or short to the No.3 who was still a safe distane away. Once the pass to Roussouw happens O'D changes direction slightly to his right, it's barely a step, but the pair are so close he can't get down low enough or even really extend his arms - his fault the incident happened but I don't think anyone was trying to deliberately incur a head injury.

What tackle are you talking about? This is near identical to the tackle Brian Lima made when he knocked himself out or less severe than lelia Masaga tackling lwazi mvovo. No card there, not even a penalty. It makes no sense to penalize someone because they were knocked out and couldn't complete getting their arms around. The intention to get the arms around is clear. So both guys have a clash of heads. O'Driscoll is lucky having a less sensitive area of the skull receiving the impact, and Roussouw not so much. O'Driscoll also feels dazed for a bit afterwards. But somehow a tackle that entails a clash of heads (i.e. a bad way to tackle someone), and leaves you dazed, and involves alot of luck (to not be seriously harmed yourself), is somehow a glorious and powerful tackle?
Amazing how ten years on attitudes have change so much. When Brussouw tried to get to his feet you could hear the crowd mockingly cheering him. You'd be set upon if you did that at a match nowadays.
Same goes for Barnes. His comments weren't really out of step if you're judging by the standards of the day. Tackling like BOD's was illegal but not worthy of the utter contempt you'd generate if you did it today.
As an aside i think people are awfully precious these days and the virtue signalling in the comments is irritating.
Ya, the reaction of the crowd wasn't nice. Looking back, I am sure most of the people at the match can now see the seriousness of a big man falling over like that.

@@kylebyrne7282 No penalty, legal tackle headclash. Look at Owen Franks knockout hit on Fli Van Der Merwe, identical tackle to this one except Brian got knocked out and Franks did not. Head clashes are not penalties, they're just unfortunate accidents.
And still the Lions lost! :-)
Shocked himself with that tackle😂
Exactly, Man knocked himself out
