Presenter: Dr Ayesha Siddiqua DVM MS
Host: Prof. Mark Stevenson BVSc MVSc PhD
Topic: ‘Global Burden of Animal Diseases’
In This Talk: Livestock is one of the growing sectors in the world. Animal production systems and food safety are influenced by emerging and endemic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, animal welfare, and the environment and climate change. In developing countries, it is increasingly expanding to meet the growing demand for animal products. Differences between developed and developing countries, as well as between highly intensive production methods on the one hand, and smallholder and agropastoral systems on the other, are anticipated to become more prominent in livestock production. Animal diseases have a wide range of biophysical and socio-economic consequences, which can be direct or indirect, and range from localised to worldwide. Diseases have far-reaching consequences in today's globalised and interconnected world, going beyond animal sickness and mortality. The future state of infectious diseases will be different from today's, reflecting a variety of factors, such as changes in mean climate and climate variability, population shifts, and new technologies for battling infectious diseases. The lack of data, which is a vital area where improvements are needed if disease diagnostics, monitoring, and impact assessment are successful and sustainable in the developing world, is a challenge. To meet this challenge, GBADs will measure and improve societal outcomes from livestock to have a positive impact on sustainable development goals.
