After almost day of fighting, Freeman searches for another way to the surface, in hopes of escaping the Black Mesa Research Facility in a place that is relatively free of the enemy. Upon finding one, he discovers that the surface is far worse than anything he had encountered below. It is at this moment Gordon realized that there is no escaping Black Mesa, as the entire state of New Mexico is now, essentially, an infested warzone destined to be nuked into oblivion. He is much better off entertaining the scientists hope of somehow stopping all this at the Lambda Complex, or dying at the side of his colleges.
