Chinchilla doesn't need to walk around half naked to draw attention to herself and I absolutely love all her fashion choices in her videos, they're eclectic, original and fascinating! Love love love her!! Yes, the outfit is a fly. Her EP is called Flytrap, and the outfit was made for the cover photo shoot. She loved the costume so much that she decided to wear it for this video as well. Chinchilla designs and creates a lot of her own costumes, although I don't believe that she made this one. In most of her videos she's wearing fabulous hats, meant of which she made herself.
I am so cynical about the music industry that when I noticed in multiple videos that Chinchilla was almost always covered from wrists to throat I wondered whether she might actually suffer from some body esteem issues... then I started following her on Instagram and saw how she dresses when out with friends. She MOST DEFINITELY does NOT have body esteem issues. Her decision to wear unrevealing outfits when preforming (like her decision to employ back-up dancers older than than my grandma on MF DIAMOND) is intentional counter-programming, and is fucking brilliant! Keep defying expectations, Chinchilla! With that voice you can do ANYTHING you like!!
I absolutely LOVE that about her. How much ya wanna bet that the record label wanted her to show more skin and be sexier? (Not to mention tone down the creative outfits). Fuck them!! I am most certainly not a prude and I have no problem with my fellow women dressing any damn way they please. But I often find myself wondering why the hell singers at the level of Beyoncé and Mariah Carey are still dancing around half naked, writhing on a bed in a nightie, etc. The industry forces women to be sexy to get noticed… OK. It sucks but it’s true. But once you get to a level where you have creative control, why do they keep doing that? Don’t they think about the next generation of women who might not want to do that? Or feel like they shouldn’t have to? THIS young woman has got it all. I absolutely love the fact that I cannot assign her to a genre. I love it. I love her skill, but mostly her creativity, her uniqueness on her mindset. Singers are a dime a dozen, but she is an artist.

She has a lot of female empowerment songs with lyrics that are digs at the music industry or what was expected/demanded of her. And she's not having it. MF Diamond, Little Girl Gone, Bounce Back. I LOVE when (males especially) comment on her being fully clothed and appreciating that. We live in a crazy time, where it's sad that that's a rare topic. My daughter is a "swifty" and though I don't hate that, I think she's a decent role model, but her outfits and makeup are usually a little more than I appreciate. My role model growing up was Shania Twain, and though she had a few crazy outfits, she was MOSTLY modest. I love Chinchilla for her personality, convictions, and voice!
