I bought the smaller version of this radio after the Ohio tornados, and was reminded again why I have it after the Kentucky tornados. Both of these incidents occurred at night and you want as much warning from as many sources as possible. It's also important to have a source of information in the aftermath an event as well, once hurricane Katrina had passed survivors were unaware of supplies that were available a few blocks from their location because their phone service was out and they didn't a battery powered radio.

If the battery goes completely dead on the ER210. No matter how long you charge it or crank it, put it in the sun it stays dead. My old Grundig Crank radio, got me through many events including Superstorm Sandy. The newer CCranes got me through power outages, blizzards, etc. This E210 was useless when I needed it. It may have been a defective battery. Who knows. All I know it was not ready to work when I needed it. I am glad I didn't dump my old Grundig with duct tape on it and bent antenna. Also the CCranes were there in time of emergency. The Midland ER210 is just good to put under an uneven table in a time of emergency. Just speaking from experience. Peace.

Good review. I still have my old Midland CB :) I also have an older, very similar model of this E-Ready in a Midland ER210 model, purchased almost four years ago. The ER210 radio appears to be the exact same radio as the Midland E-Ready demonstrated here, but made with some very practical modifications.
The downsides of the ER210 includes a 18650 Li-on proprietary plug in connector type battery, which apparently are not easy to find. The LAST thing any emergency radio should have is a hard to find replacement battery, even a battery of top quality as seems the case. But we all know that even the best battery is going to degrade over time, so it's good to see that this deficiency was addressed by the E-Ready unit, designed to also accept common household batteries.
Another downside of the ER210 was that it came with an awkwardly short USB A/USB C cable. On top of that, the USB C side was a non standard size. The plug casing (the part you hold onto to plug it in) is smaller than any other USC C's that I have come across (and I have looked). I'd like to know if this is still the case with the E-Ready.
A standard 'C" plug can be made to fit into the ER210 slot, but doing so places too much tension on the 'C" plug receptacle, which can only degrade the plug over time. You have to insert a standard size plug into it gingerly, then wait for the red LED to light, then STOP and carefully set the unit down.
If they'd set the radio's casing molding perhaps 1mm wider in the receptacle location, or if possible, they had moved the plug itself that distance away from the edge of the casing, it'd easily take a common 'C' size cable plug.
This is another non standard part, the opposite of what any emergency radio should have. Use of common connectors and batteries is only common sense. We know why companies like to use proprietary parts and this is a particular fail in an emergency radio.
On the ER210, the Solar bar on top is more of a booster, extender or maintainer than a charger.
I tested the Solar "charging" capacities when the ER210 was still close to new, and found that it might take a full charge after three strait days in direct sunshine while periodically re-positioning the panel at a prime angle for max sun, with the unit off. It's my understanding that it's not ideal to charge batteries while they are in use.
The ER210's are still available for about $30.00. If I followed the Sportsman's Guide discounts and assuming an additional 'Buyers Club' membership discount, then this works out to $52.99 ea. for the E-Ready or $105.98 for both. (Do your own math, I still haven't quite woken up here).

Thanks for the review. I am assuming this is the ER310. I had avioded this model because of an @mazon review complaining that the battery was not easily replaceable. The reviewer showed an 18650 battery but with wire leads and a connector. Yours looks like it takes a standard 18650 with a button on the + end, which can be found pretty easily and I have several already for flashlights. Anyway, it was an older review (2017) and I guess Midland changed the design to accomodate readily available replacements.

I have the Midland ER210. It's a little smaller than the one you have. It doesn't have the AA battery holder or the dog whistle, but otherwise it's the same. It's a great emergency radio - durable, sensitive, and versatile. I keep it on my desk but it'll go into my bugout bag if I have to evacuate. (I live downwind of a nuclear power plant so if there's an incident, I need to be able to get news. And since most radio broadcasters have backup power, they're pretty reliable in a disaster.)

Sir, I'm hoping to find a weather radio that lets you customize the settings & I wonder if you know if this one does. For example, I live in MO & only want my radio to go off for tornado warnings. The other radios I've had in the past were all or nothing, you'd get that startling alarm for a tornado watch or severe thunderstorm warning. My heart can't take that kind of scare for lesser storms, so I want to find a radio I can customize in that way. Thanks for your thoughts & thanks for your channel! God bless!

All my grippy plastics over a decade become incredibly tacky as well, the oils seep to the surface and renders the item useless. How can this be delayed in storage? Flashlights, radios, walkie talkies, binoculars all had this problem after redoing my get home bag, lost funds. Wish I could buy plastics that did not do this, I think if it has ruberized feel it is a no go for me moving forward, only nylon or rigid type polymers from what I can tell.

I bought one of these radios last year. Just FYI I found it incapable of charging my iphone 6 with the included lithium battery even fully charged. I tested a comparable battery and same thing. So not much good as a power bank. This will likely be a deal breaker for most and not sure if my unit was defective and was looking to see if others had the same problem. When switched to the AA batteries it charged my phone just fine. Radio reception of the NOAA channel (or in Canada the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) (eye roll) radio Hz was barely there. Do I need a special antenna to pick up shortwave? Thanks in advance.

What if you plug it in, put it in the sun and operate the hand crank all together will it charge faster.

FM tuning is with steps of 0.2 MHz in odd numbers, so some stations that transmit on frequencies ended with decimal even numbers can not be tune with Midland emergencies radios ER210 and ER310. The reception of emergency radios is not the best. I recommend a good quality rechargeable and portable radio instead, like a C. Crane Skywave or Skywave SSB paired with at least 5 W solar panel, and a good hand and/or pedal crank generator.

It won't recharge with solar. Bought one back in March and it's in my windowsill since. It still has only 2 battery dots. Fully recharged it would only recharge my smartphone about 15 percent. Also the hand crank wouldn't charge the battery more than 1 dot after 20 minutes of cranking. I'm sure it will get me radio and light in an emergency but I won't trust it as a source of energy for any device. Please let me know if any of you tested it properly and what your thoughts are. Thanks!

Mindland makes some great products. Slightly over priced but full of features. The hand cranks are terrible tho. Lots of cranking for a min or 2 of music and less of light.

When I heard that Midland used proprietary batteries they lost me. With many quality rechargeable AA batteries out there, there was no reason not to permit their use. Yes, alkaline batteries are ok, but rechargeables are the way to go.

Thx for this review. Btw would you have any reviews on garmin gps devices and navigation tips in general for when you might find yourself out in the elements without any modern devices?

Did anyone else notice that when the dog whistle is turned on, volume level the mic is picking up gets quieter? Seriously. And likewise when it was turned off, it returns to normal level.
(Sootch, did you hear any kind of a distortion or anything at all with the dog whistle being on?) I swear the sound level of the video drops when its turned on.
    Interesting, anyway.

I have the newer version of this, it’s pretty much the same but the reception sucks even with the antenna up, only picks up two radio stations and zero weather channels, pretty disappointed.
