What you are listening to is 6 years of work by Tom Scholz in his basement, a perfectionist to the Nth degree. He played all the guitars and keyboards, brought in a drummer and Brad who does ALL the (layered) vocals. When the album hit the charts, he had to cobble together a touring band. There are many accounts of the origin of this album for you to peruse on the net.
My generation wore out turn table needles on this vinyl album. Bought the 8 track tape, the cassette tape, then the CD. Now we listen to it every 2 hours on oldie stations, and download to our phones. It still has not gotten old.
8-track tapes were awesome. Maybe the songs were out of order from the LP, but you never had to flip them over or set the needle back to the beginning to hear it all over again.
@@jethrofawkes8189 I remember sometimes when listening to 8-tracks you could hear other songs on the album at the same time you were hearing the current song. It's hard to explain, but everyone in my generation who experienced 8-track tapes knows what I'm talking about.
That transition from Foreplay to Long Time is one of the greatest transition in all of rock music. It's absolutely mind-blowing whether you're hearing it for the first time or the 100th time. Also, this entire album is pure gold and widely considered one of the best debut albums ever. I got my teenage daughter into Boston last year, she listened to the whole album with me one night and couldn't get enough of them. Ive never felt so proud, a new fan, a new generation, and one more person listening to real music. Its an awesome feeling. Great reaction, dont stop here!
This is PEAK Boston. If you were a college freshman in the fall of 1977 wandering around campus, you would have heard either this song or "More Than a Feeling" blasting from the window of someone's dorm room out into the courtyard of every quad. (Yes, I speak from experience.) Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember where I was when I heard this for the 1st time. Older friends house, about 1 pm in the middle of Summer vacation. His dad had an audiophile stereo system. We had the volume up to 11. Same place I heard Van Halen's "Eruption".
Boston had such a unique sound because Tom Scholz not only wrote arranged and played most of the instrumental tracks, but also designed and built the effects equipment on this album. And this album was recorded in the basement of Tom's apartment. Back in the day and up to today people in search of a record deal will do what the label says. The label wanted to record at their studio in L.A. Tom refused. He wanted to do it in the basement. The rep started lo leave tom's apartment but stopped at the door and said "O.k. you record the tracks here. We'll mix them in L.A." Tom paused for a few seconds in shock. And then the rep said "And we'll split the producers fee."

You can literally drop the needle on any part of this album and find your next favorite song! Boston has one of the greatest debut albums ever recorded!!
Boston never used a synthesizer. They were proud of being able to make the music without one. Now you know. Great album. Thank you for taking your time to react to this!!
Now you know how we felt back in 1976! "Rock and Roll Band" "Peace Of Mind" "Don't look Back" "The Man I'll Never Be" and "Amanda" are five more from this iconic band that you should react to.
I’m 55. Boston albums ranged from my childhood to my high school days. Totally distinctive goose-bump music. Check out their Third Stage album “We’re ready”, “Cool the Engines” and “Amanda”. Boston is like Macaroni and Cheese. Everyone loves it!
Oh YES !! You might not see this , with all your followers, but Boston was my FIRST concert !! How bout that !! I WON 2 tickets on the radio to the Omni ,in Atlanta GA. In either 1978 or '79 I was a freshman and they had an organ coming out of the stage !! It was INCREDIBLE! In just hearing it again brings back all those goose bumps ! I am almost 62 and it takes me right back to being that shy freshman and not a care in the world ( for those 3 or 4 hrs ) I'm so glad you like them .. but watching you enjoy their music 🎶 , means a lot to old parts like me ! Lol j/k you have a blessed day and remember all glory goes to God! 🎉
This is my favorite Boston tune. It is different from their "blow the windows out" rockin' stuff but still quintessential Boston. Something About You is my second favorite and to me has a Beetlesque quality.
The fact that any of those three is someone’s favorite, to me is proof of the band’s longevity. Many times it’s whatever album was the first you heard makes it your favorite. They are timeless!
This was the first album I ever bought. I was 10 years old and I saved my lawn mowing money and went to the local record store. Unfortunately, 40+ years later I no longer have it, but several years ago my son started collecting vinyl so when ever I went by a thrift or antique store that might sell albums I'd stop and look for it. Eventually I finally found an original pressing and gave it to him last Christmas. To this day "More Than A Feeling" is my favorite song and YES, even after hearing it 1000s of times, it still transports me back to younger days. You do great reactions! Keep up the good work!!
I remember growing up a few blocks away from Tom Schulz’s place in Watertown Massachusetts. He built and recorded his studio in the basement. Tom is a MIT graduate. Thank you for the greatest album and the memories you have given to millions of Boston fans. Whenever I listen to the album, I close my eyes and travel back to my teenage years
I saw Boston in 3 different concerts in metro Detroit. 2 times at Cobo Arena in Detroit and 1 time at the Pontiac Silver Dome. Sad to say, both places are no more...
Foreplay was a work in progress for over 5 years before Tom Scholz was satisfied with it. Sib Hasian played drums and Tom played everything else. The only other person involved in the writing, recording, engineering and production of this album was Brad Delp who sang beautifully. Recorded in Tom’s home basement studio that he built and using several pieces of equipment that he either modified or invented because nothing existed that could do what he wanted. One of those inventions became the foundation for every guitar effects pedal available today.
I remember listening to Boston back in the 70's when I was young. To me, Boston is the epitome of summer. Once spring breaks and that first summer day hits, it's Boston, with the windows down, driving down the road. Destination doesn't matter, it's the journey, and Boston is always forefront on the ride.
Indeed. Only problem is, "Foreplay/Long Time" is one of those songs that makes responsible drivers who usually hover around the speed limit look at their speedometer while the song is playing on the sound system of their car and realize they are now driving at 98mph.
One thing I love about Boston is the vocal and guitar harmonizing. I loved your reaction. I'm glad you enjoyed another song from this great classic rock band. Your a bundle of joy. Thank you for sharing 😁👍
No, that was an organ - a featured instrument of the band. The guitar made much of the rest of the sounds. The "intro" was the first song Foreplay (instrumental).(If it has a name, it is a separate song). Their organ was the world's largest portable pipe organ. Their first 4 albums are all masterpieces.
Between Foreplay and Long time is the album cover “story”. It has particular notes that’s can be found on every album. It is the journey of the BOSTON spaceship/Guitar found in every Boston album cover.
Boston was way ahead of their time. This came out in 1976, I was 6 and jammed to this with my older brothers and sisters. The guitarist work is one of the most underrated there is. The intro with the use of the organ etc was groundbreaking.
I was fortunate enough to sing backup vocals with Boston at the 87 Texas Jam. Brad died the same day my 99 year old grandmother did. I wept for both. Brad was asked once why he was the only vocalist on the album. He stated, "Who better to sing harmonies with, than yourself?" Loved him and how he and his music changed my life. And few things are as wonderful as watching a beautiful woman react to Boston's beautiful music!! 😍
I used to love when I was blasting this on my car stereo back in the day coming up to a red light as Foreplay ends waiting for the reaction from all the people around me as Long Time blasted out, all smiles every time.
A lot of people never realized that on the album cover, the space ships are guitars with sound hole pointing down. In the dome is the city of Boston. There are two others behind it.
Welcome to the 1970s. I'm 69, so I grew up with this, among hundreds of other great bands. This was mostly the creation of Tom Sholz and his knowledge of electronic effects. His engineering on this album is pure genius. If I remember correctly, he worked as an engineer for Polaroid cameras, until "the band" was successful. He is the only member of the band still standing. Brad Delp was the lead vocalist. Most of the debut album was created with LOTs of multitrack overdubbing by Tom and Brad. I like your reaction! *You absolutely got the vibe.* This song was probably responsible for the dank basement, or lovers' lane, consummation of more teen relationships than we know. What a glorious debut album! One of the few bands I can point to who do the same thing for me in 2024 is The Warning. Their latest album, *Keep Me Fed,* is amazing. If you really want to go down the rabbit hole of 1960's music, go watch some of the documentaries of the Laurel Canyon scene in the late 1960s, early 1970s. Artists like Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash, The Mamas and Papas, Carole King, The Doors, The Byrds, The Monkeys, The Beach Boys, Gram Parsons, Buffalo Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, Frank Zappa, and literally dozens of others came out of that area. It was an intense and magical concentration of musical creativity that will probably never happen in one place again. It was REAL, ANALOG, and innocent until it wasn't. It's a GREAT story.
I was a teenager in the 70's, the whole of the 70's were my teen years. Brialliance, pure brilliance. Then in 1977 we got Meat Loaf and Bat Out of Hell. We were very lucky back then. (EDIT and I've just noticed that you only reacted to Meat Loaf 4 days ago !!!)
I haven't heard this song for quite awhile. Grew up in the 70s and 80s listened to everything. We had such good music we took it for granted because there were so many good groups with real music. I watch reactions and I appreciate the music more so now. Watching you react to this song gets me emotional because I'm jealous that you get to here these songs for the first time.
Saw them in concert at the Sun Dome in Tampa, FL. in 1995. What a crowd! While waiting for the concert to start, we saw a man with greying hair in his' 50's walk in, wearing a Tux. His date was a stunning blonde in a light blue floor length evening gown with a tiara, diamond earrings/necklace and white elbow length gloves. 10 feet behind them, in walked a woman in her 30's wearing a black bustier, leather short shorts, fishnet stockings, thigh-high boots and black leather gloves. In her hand was a silver chained dog leash. This leash was attach to the collar of the man she was leading in. He was wearing black combat boots, black leather pants, a black leather vest (no shirt), spiked leather dog collar and a full head black leather mask with only breathing holes! I told my friends "This Concert just went to the next level"!! The concert was awesome!
I’ve been hooked on Boston since the album hit in 1976! More Than A Feeling got so much airtime I grew tired of it but never tire of Foreplay/Long Time in nearly 50 years. Yes! It’s a great song on a playlist for a long drive! Just be sure to use cruise or you’ll find yourself going 90!
A Man I'll Never Be. IMO, the best guitar lick in their entire catalog. The emotional depth is very moving. The guitar keeps repeating that theme occasionally throughout the song.
Really showcases the genius of Tom Scholz ….he wrote it all…played all the instruments, except the drums. So essentially 3 people put this together, Delp’s immaculate vocals, the drumming and fills are stellar too, and Scholz. Plus Scholz mixed it all together too in his basement studio.
"Foreplay" has the prep, blastoff, and arrival in space of the Boston craft that then plays "Long TIme". That quiet arrival in space is genius in that you crank it up to then get blown away when "Long Time" starts - yes everyone cranks this one up loud. Every song on their first album is a hit, but I'd go to "Hitch A Ride" next for a change of pace; and after some more rockers like "Smokin' " go to "A Man I'll Never Be" that's on their second album "Don't Look Back".
You mentioned blasting Boston and that makes me think of when I was first listening to this album. When I drove around listening to this everyone listened to it if they liked it or not! I had a '74 Chevelle with a Pioneer stereo, a 100 watt amp/eq/reverb, Pyle Driver and Sparkomatic speakers. Fun times those were and the music still is good. Peace.
You're right, Boston really sounds fantastic when you blast it. And I saw them in a small arena in 1977 and it was incredible. The sound was just bouncing off the walls and it was so loud, but the thing was the production was still really good on it, and the vocals were tremendous, and all the harmonies and everything. Fran on bass ends up being a total riot live, lol.
Love this band. You should also check out "Peace of Mind", "Don't Look Back", "Party", "Amanda", "Rock & Roll Band", "Smokin", "A Man I'll Never Be", & "Cool The Engines".
Tom Scholtz the founder of Boston was raised on classical music and you can hear that influence here with the intro. Again you hear Brad Deep the lead singer not only singing lead but also harmony and background vocals by overdubbing. I've been listening to them for 48 years and never tire of their music. It is fun to watch you experience them for the first time and have the same reactions I had.
Man. I hadn't heard that tune in a looooooong time. ( no pun intended ) Odd considering one of the tunes that got me to learn guitar at 12. Still playing.. MANY years later lol. Great stuff lady. Be well.
It’s 1976, I’m a sophomore at Michigan State. The hand-written note attached to State Drug’s New Release/Boston bin says “Better than Aerosmith”. Boy were they right! It’s so great to see younger generations discover some of the best music ever created.
I think I love you 😂... Your reactions are more real than any I've found. Keep up the great work on this channel. I was 12 when this album released and it changed the music landscape... Boston is the definition of "they have a unique sound" 🤘
This song was always the opener at a few discos I went to back in the day in Cincinnati. The intro brought everyone to the floor to start the evening. Best days ever! ❤
I was a freshman when this came out. I wish I could remember where I was the first time I heard this. I do remember making Boston and Frampton T shirts in Graphic arts and painted an 8’x8’ mural of this album cover in Mrs Morris’s painting class. GAME CHANGER album for MOST of rock n roll/pop fans!
This was the first Album I bought when I was 17 at the same time that I purchased my first turntable, a BIC 980. I worked summers logging to get the cash. I had built my own custom stereo which was quite powerful and had very clean sound. It was transcendent experience hearing this song for the first time. Hearing your enthusiasm does teleport me back in time to that moment. 👍 Thanks!!!
No synths. That was definitely an organ. I saw them live on 11 March, 1979 and Tom played a massive organ that rose out of the stage for this song. It was awesome! And on the album, Brad Delp did all of the vocals, lead, backing and harmonies. He was one of a kind and is sorely missed!
Well done! I so enjoy watching you experiencing this band the way I did when hearing it for the first time on the day it was released back in 1976. EVERY song on this album is sheer perfection and if I were you I'd either do "Smokin'" or "Hitch A Ride" next. The double lead guitar at the end of the HAR will move you to tears. Love your channel. Keep it up!
This album is nearly 50 years old and it’s still, in my opinion, the greatest Debut Album ever! The instrumental at the beginning (what you were calling ‘the intro’) is FOREPLAY, which then segues into LONG TIME. The liner notes for this song give credit to the people clapping! PEACE OF MIND next
I was all of 13 when this came out. Like many out there at the time, it blew my socks off. There were so many albums that came out in the mid to late 70's but this one was in a class all it's own.
Awesome seeing younger people discovering these classics. This album was released in 1976, one of the great years for music. Rush - 2112 Genesis- A Trick of the Tail Eagles - Hotel California Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive AC/DC - Dirty Deeds The Ramones - The Ramones Jackson Browne - The Pretender Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers So glad I grew up with all these albums to enjoy. Music has changed so much the past 50 years and not for the better. Rock On Stacey 😎
You forget what a great tune this is if you haven't heard it for a while. When this stuff was pouring forth from the radio every day we didn't think the party would ever end.
One of the best Classic Rock albums of all time!! Ever!! I grew up with this timeless music!! I love all the songs on this album but I have a favorite. "Hitch A Ride" is an awesome tune also with great guitar work!!
In 1977, I would occasionally cover my brothers paper route when he wasn't able. It was a row of small apartment buildings, and one customer always seemed to be playing this album full blast. The rest of his customers would get their paper 45 minutes late 😊
Eargasm is definitely the correct word. This song brings me back to the 80's, summertime at the lake, and dancing around a bonfire with my girlfriend and her twin sister. 😊
I'm from the north of Boston myself and live the next town over from where their drummer, Sib Hashian, lived. Around here, he was legendary, and reportedly a very good person besides - we patronized the same dry cleaner, and the proprietor had nothing but wonderful things to say about him. RIP Sib.
Thanks for getting back to Boston so quick. I will be commenting every Boston reaction. Smokin' would be a good next song. If you want to jump to the third album for sh!ts and giggles, Cool the Engines will not disappoint.
Great reaction, thanks for sharing. So far you have heard song 1 side 1, and song 3 side 1 of the debut album. Next up is song 2 side 1 Peace of Mind. All three are mastercrafted songs. The best part is it is three people. Tom Scholz plays all the instruments. Sib plays the drums and Brad Delp sings all the vocal parts. Most of the album recorded in the basement of Tom. Who wrote, composed, engineered, arranged all the music with help from his friends. This album would play at parties for about a decade. The entire album is amazing, with some songs legendary. Chris
100% real...zero auto tune. Just raw analog mikes and amps...a lil electricity and air of course. 🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸 and nope it was a true to honest organ ..i heard bought from a church! Tom actually toured with it..was very lucky to catch one of their last shows with new singers/players etc...and yes he brought that massive organ took up half the stage! Shook the whole stadium!!!!🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸🤘😔🎸 Cant mess with MIT thats all i have to say! Edit: please do listen to all of their music in order...its a concept collection (not concepts of a plan 🤣🤣🤣 - sorry just had to!)
Wow Stacey! I loved watching groove to this song! You totally caught on so quickly and was grroving so hard I thought you were going to jump up and start dancing. And I was ready to do the same with you!!! I thought you were going to back it up and start again...Thanks for your energy. And your openness to real good music. This definitely a playlist song while driving or doing anything. Great talent...See you next time...Thanks again.
My favorite debut album ever it stayed on the charts forever and I love the name of the song you reacted to foreplay / long time sounds fun it is this is by far one of the greatest two together songs ever done it's mind-blowing just like everything Boston did for the first three albums
This is the greatest debut album ever made. Every song could be a number one on the chart. This album is a masterpiece.
Definitely!!!!
This one and Chicago Transit Authority are 2 of the best debut albums ever!!!
Van Halen for me. All killer no filler
Not bad for one guy in his basement and a singer.
i think all of them wer not sure though if they all made at least top ten
Brad Delp was a unicorn. He is missed. RIP.
And that's exactly the reaction we had hearing this song/album for the first time in 1976....pure joy!

I recommend 'Peace of Mind ' as your next Boston reaction
Brad Delp sang all vocals. Harmonies, lead and backing. Amazing !
I saw Boston in concert. They sounded EXACTLY like this LIVE.
True! Someone else said that the band was “cobbled” together, but they were a top notch band that complimented Tom and Brad.

Such a great song. So damn happy to see you reacting to some great music. Thanks for all you do.
Ah, yes! I can't get enough of this song and album!
A Man I'll Never Be. IMO, the best guitar lick in their entire catalog. The emotional depth is very moving. The guitar keeps repeating that theme occasionally throughout the song.
YES!!!
YES!
Yes and this basement recorded and mixed debut album is universally considered sonically superior to the professional studio produced follow up album.
"Amanda" is also a great song to react.
Cool the Engines is better.
Peace.
so happy you're finding the joy of Boston!
Be well.
RIP Brad Delp , The most underrated voice ever !!!!
Most underrated rock song of all time. Top 5 rock song IMO.
Next up: “Peace of Mind.” Great song, and the lyrics are words to live by. I did, anyway.
" A man I'll never be "is well worth a listen...
I was all of 13 when this came out. Like many out there at the time, it blew my socks off. There were so many albums that came out in the mid to late 70's but this one was in a class all it's own.
Awesome seeing younger people discovering these classics.
This album was released in 1976, one of the great years for music.
Rush - 2112
Genesis- A Trick of the Tail
Eagles - Hotel California
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive
AC/DC - Dirty Deeds
The Ramones - The Ramones
Jackson Browne - The Pretender
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
So glad I grew up with all these albums to enjoy. Music has changed so much the past 50 years and not for the better.
Rock On Stacey 😎
You forget what a great tune this is if you haven't heard it for a while. When this stuff was pouring forth from the radio every day we didn't think the party would ever end.
You have just experienced musical foreplay and and Eargasm 😂 Great reaction and Peace out Stacey 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
The first two minutes is “Foreplay”. Just like it should, it gets you warmed up and heart beating!
Definitely "ear-gasmic" !! Boston was incredibly popular in the "party" environment, incredible! It was fun to watch you react to this song Stacey.
This album totally redefined the art of the possible in terms recording dynamic rock music. Every song on it is a banger. Keep going.
This debut is also referred to as a greatest hits Album!!!
This whole album is fantastic! No synthesizer! Yet another fantastic reaction by staceyrpg, you're the best
I love that song. Masterpiece.
Boston and don't look back.
These albums are a masterpiece
💯💯💯💯🔊🔊😨😁🔊
I love seeing you first time react to this song. It reminded me of how mind-blown I was as a child listening to it in the 70’s
Great reaction. I remember when I first heard this. Blew me away. Fun watching you stunned by the musical changes. My favorite debut album by far.
This is a great song, and a great reaction! More Boston!
A Man I'll Never Be or Hitch A Ride would be my recommendation for your next Boston song.
