- Maddie Lim’s piece, “Rosie’s Garden,” is based on an original tale that she wrote.
~ ~ ~
Rosie lives in a forest all alone. No other roses are around, just the other flora and fauna who belittle and bully her. This is all she has known for most of her life.
One day, a nightingale pays her a visit and, upon hearing her story, offers to help her find a new home. The nightingale flies Rosie away from the forest, while singing sweetly to her.
They descend into a colourful garden where she meets other roses. But while she enjoys their company and listens to their stories, she reflects in sadness, absent of any ambitions of her own.
She then hears a mesmerising tale from a wise old rose who created the first rose garden millions of years ago. By spreading her petals over the trees, flowers grew everywhere and became the beautiful garden in which they stand today. Inspired by this, Rosie finds her dream.
The nightingale then flies Rosie to their next destination, while teaching her how to sing.
But soon, a heavy storm hits, forcing them to ground for shelter. Rosie finds a safe place to rest and, to her horror, discovers that her new friend is missing.
She cries, as she is stranded. Can she ever explore the world again? She cries, fearing she may never bloom into a full rose. She cries, fearing she may never realise her dreams. She cries, as memories of her lonely past come flooding back.
The storm clears up. A faint song starts to play in her head; it is the song of the nightingale. She sings, as she recalls the melody. She sings, everyday, until other roses nearby hear her song. They gather around Rosie to lend their voices in harmony. She realises she is no longer in the cold, mean forest all alone. She realises that maybe there is hope.
Together they continue to sing in full chorus, which attracts all the other flowers and creatures around. And they all offer to help Rosie build her own dream-
A garden of her own.
