Id argue bun and other things lower quality of fried chicken. The Rueben on the other hand has salty and umami from corned beef, has tangy and kinda vinegar sour from the sauerkraut, swiss cheese brings a nuttiness to it, then choose mustard of russian dressing on marbled rye. I mean it is the yin and yang of greatness and every part of it is integral for it to be good.
Im saying this a former manager at many delis and sub restaurants. Cuban is solid no doubt, but I want to sell you on something I bet you've never had. Take some honey ham, sliced how you like it. Lay some out like a bed, add a layer sliced provolone, fold that once to the size of the sandwich and drop it on a hot pan. Let it sizzle for a bit, flip it. You know you are nailing it when the ham is browning in parts on the cooked side. Have a good sub roll prepared with mayo and lettuce. Drop the hot ham and provolone on that, add white onions and sliced tomato. Just a dash of oregano to the top, close that and enjoy! I wasn't a fan of ham until I tried it with melted provolone and all the fix. Add yes sirs to your liking 😉 Big respect to NL for not dissing the grilled cheese. He is right, you can do fantastic things to them. Lately I've been melting cheddar on ciabattas with slices of roma tomato added after taking out of the toaster oven. Another favorite is melted mozzarella on thin focaccia with roma, basil leaves and a dash of Italian red oil and pesto.
If you go to a restaurant that has Thanksgiving sandwiches you will understand that it is good in march, june, and especially september, the biggest push back against a Thanksgiving sandwich is the sheer amount of work and different uncommon parts that are needed to comprise it, not the enjoyment of eating it

The Reuben is a combination of all of the worst forms of its ingredients. Sauerkraut is the absolute worst way to prepare cabbage, corned beef is just a poorly seasoned version of brisket, and rye bread is the single most inferior type of bread in existence. I just want to point out that if you order a Reuben in Montreal, you will get Montreal style smoke meat instead of corn beef. It makes it a much more flavourful sandwich. Once you've had a Reuben in Montreal, it is hard to order one in any other city because it just isn't as good.

Typically, it's made out of Jamón Serrano (the Spanish equivalent of Parma ham) and with some Spanish hard cheese (similar to Parmesan cheese, but typically a little softer and less intense, especially the one you would put on a sandwich), on a Spanish baguette (Spain has some of the world's best bread btw). In short, it's normally as good as a sandwich gets... just supreme ingredients on a great bread. Also, super easy/great for bringing with you; just wrap it in some plastic foil, and it will stay fresh for a couple of days in room temperature.

There’s an extraordinary labor cost associated with the thanksgiving sandwich that makes it impractical unless the labor has already been supplemented, as it has on thanksgiving when you have leftovers, but this does not lower its value. It’s a delicious thing, and one of the best side-benefits of the holiday, it’s just a pain to cook a whole turkey and a whole bunch of side dishes, so most people won’t bother unless it’s a special occasion.

Cucumber tea sandwiches are great... but whoever wrote that book had never had one. Take your wheat bread, make sure it's nice and fluffy and fresh. Cut it into slices. Cut the crusts off the slices. Slice your cucumber into decent sized chunks about 3mm to 6mm thick. Spread salted butter on one side, cream cheese on the other with a layer of cucumber in between. Cut into triangles. Amazing sandwich that is incredibly light and refreshing. Great at afternoon teas alongside petite fours.
I also for a long time subscribed to adding banana to the PB&J, but after a couple years I grew tired of it. Now I think it's too sweet that way, which isn't what I'm looking for in a breakfast. With that said, falafel pita is the best sandwich, and nothing really comes close for me.

The Cubano is genuinely my favorite sandwich, I even ran it as a special at my last job at a restaurant on st pattys day(that had many of these sandwiches on its menu already) and we sold so many they put it on the new menu. The only thing we sold more that day was Reubens. I think you underrate banh mi and reuben and need to treat yourself to a real jambon beurre but regardless I don't think I've ever agreed with an opinion bracket more.
Yes totally! There’s something so perfect about a proper jambon beurre that you wouldn’t understand until you’ve had it because on paper as an American it sounds like crap. But when you get actual hood baguette, with actual good butter, and actual good ham, man is it good. Sorry for all the actuals but it had to be said lol, can’t have no bargain brand ham and land o lakes on some wonder bread. Let alone the best ingredients you could possibly get in a supermarket don’t even come close to what you could get if you actually were able to get your hands on some good stuff.

The Cubano is the truth. It is the best sandwich ever crafted. A good Italian Sub, is a close second. Bacon, Egg, and Chess is my go to breakfast meal. (Sidenote to NL: you can make it with fried bread much like a Grileld Cheese, that's how I make mine in the morning.)
Best way to improve your grilled cheese: use mayo instead of butter. Just put a thin layer of mayo on the bread before putting it in the pan, and it's a ton better. I also like to put some thinly sliced tomato, maybe some bacon on there. It'll make even a white bread and Kraft singles grilled cheese taste like heaven. As for banana on a toasted PB&J? I'm 100% all for it. Doesn't matter if you like big chunks or small ones, banana will improve the base sandwich. Works especially well with strawberry jelly/jam over grape, but grape is still good in this situation. Also, yes, it should've ended with gyro vs Reuben, and the Reuben would've won, but just barely.

Blasting the Monte Cristo in round one... Very sad he's never had it with jam, that's the part that makes it stand out as great. There's this local place that serves it on special raspberry bread and then slathered in a homemade raspberry jam.

I have never eaten a banh mi even though I am so curious. The only reason is because there is no way in hell I am ever passing up a chance to eat Pho instead.
I know I'm replying 9 months later, but if you still haven't tried banh mi you should do so right away. I'm not normally a fan of wet sandwiches but it just hits different.
The Cubano is genuinely my favorite sandwich, I even ran it as a special at my last job at a restaurant on st pattys day(that had many of these sandwiches on its menu already) and we sold so many they put it on the new menu. The only thing we sold more that day was Reubens. I think you underrate banh mi and reuben and need to treat yourself to a real jambon beurre but regardless I don't think I've ever agreed with an opinion bracket more.
Yes totally! There’s something so perfect about a proper jambon beurre that you wouldn’t understand until you’ve had it because on paper as an American it sounds like crap. But when you get actual hood baguette, with actual good butter, and actual good ham, man is it good. Sorry for all the actuals but it had to be said lol, can’t have no bargain brand ham and land o lakes on some wonder bread. Let alone the best ingredients you could possibly get in a supermarket don’t even come close to what you could get if you actually were able to get your hands on some good stuff.
I've never been so emotionally conflicted on these choices. I can respect the bread integrity arguments, as well as specific ingredients preference.

Italian beef is just a better French Dip. It has au jus, but also giardiniera which is pickled vegetables, most notably sweet peppers.

A good Monte Cristo with jam just goes unbelievably hard. Sometimes you have to go Reuben, as most people would to be sure, but dont discount a Monte Cristo, that sweet and savory combo just makes me pog out my damn gourd every time

The Cubano is the truth. It is the best sandwich ever crafted. A good Italian Sub, is a close second. Bacon, Egg, and Chess is my go to breakfast meal. (Sidenote to NL: you can make it with fried bread much like a Grileld Cheese, that's how I make mine in the morning.)

Best way to improve your grilled cheese: use mayo instead of butter. Just put a thin layer of mayo on the bread before putting it in the pan, and it's a ton better. I also like to put some thinly sliced tomato, maybe some bacon on there. It'll make even a white bread and Kraft singles grilled cheese taste like heaven.
As for banana on a toasted PB&J? I'm 100% all for it. Doesn't matter if you like big chunks or small ones, banana will improve the base sandwich. Works especially well with strawberry jelly/jam over grape, but grape is still good in this situation.
Also, yes, it should've ended with gyro vs Reuben, and the Reuben would've won, but just barely.
Several months late but choosing the Cubano over the reliable Italian sub classic feels like a slap across the mouth.
