They are teaching us how to do a chain called harassment yet they did not play as Schezo which makes me mad because he is the most fitting man to be played with that chain name.
These tactics are way above my head at the moment. I still can barely handle even looking at my opponent's board while playing at the moment. Thankfully I'm alright enough at Tetris to compensate online. For some reason the Japanese players I've gone up against seem to be really good at Puyo and horrible at Tetris.
1:55. Leave it. Not only can they hit you with a 3 using the blues, they could use that purple green to do a power 3 off the greens below while you are locked in to your 3 chain and counter you hard! All they need is one yellow (a 2 in 4 chance one will be yellow next!) if you are well ahead and have memorized what is coming and how quickly they will move, good for you Puyo rain man! At least hold off till they place the next Puyo so you know they won't add the greens to their response!
0-o.... just like Melee this is what happens when you jump onboard a game that has had a decade or more to perfect the meta... the skill level is way too high. But the game remains super fun, non the less!

I'm not quite good at long chains yet (I keep accidentally getting like power 4s), but I'm still having a good enough time finding ways to launch as many 3s and 4s power 2's as I can at the best possible times. Fun!
First example, real advice, "only attack if you know your opponent is rigid and inflexible because they could turn it into a bulky sandwich 4 and that would leave you with a deficit in both space AND resources." Really I don't think those harasses were safe at all, unless you know your opponents play-style is flawed, Puyo isn't just about having a plan and sticking to it, you should preferably have multiple plans as backup and be able to spot things and adapt on the fly. As soon as I realize my main plan can't be completed I'm going to be going for an alternate.
It seems like if you just get a nine chain or something the match is pretty much over because of how small the board is. Why not just always focus on getting that quickly?
Because setting off your chain first can be dangerous. Chains take time to finish. If you and your opponent both have a 9-chain and you set yours off, your opponent will use the time to turn their 9-chain into a 10 or 11-chain and then activate that, offsetting all of your garbage and filling your board completely, killing you. If you and your opponent both currently have similarly powerful boards, you need to disable your opponent before attacking. By the way, the threshold for deadly chain is about 5 or 6, those chains can completely fill the board if they aren't countered. Attacking in puyo is very hard if the enemy is capable of launching a good counterattack, so you need to make sure that the enemy can't use strong attacks before you fire off a 5+ chain.
Adding to the previous reply... that's the very reason harass power chains are key in high-level Puyo. They are quick to fire, they are strong enough to block the opposing player's chain trigger for at least two rows, and you still have a long chain to build after attacking.
I would go so far as to say power 1s, 2s and 3s are the strongest move in the game! More so than your main chain, beyond around 6 garbage scaling goes down, to where a power 9 can beat a 10, in any Puyo match, the quickest way to deal or remove damage is almost always best, you want to minimize the time your opponent has to respond, forcing them to make a bad move, trigger their main chain, take the hit or die a power 3 timed well can put you in a position where you have no chance, just watch for counter setups before a follow-up and don't lock yourself into a power 2 if they have a big power 3, you'll be forced to use your next Puyo to defend and if you can't you're in trouble! Note that power 1 setups can occur quite regular and be converted into a chain, if you see an opportunity you can get 2 lines out of a one chain easily, even 4 lines is possible, this is deadly if unexpected as you have no time to react at all! Power 3 could easily kill from an empty board, or build tsurukame, works as a chain or a massive power 2 that will kill, wait till the opponent harasses, then fire!

TeCool Mage Nope. Not only does the board "freeze" for a fraction of a second in puyo to allow harassment, but the garbage drops on top of the puyos, potentially covering their chains. Against tetris, I'm not too sure of the strategy when playing as puyo, however, harassment does not exist as the garbage stacks on the bottom of the board, which doesn't affect their setup. However, as far as I know, there is a "knockout" strategy when against tetris. If you know how many garbage lines you'll send and your opponent's tetris stack is high in the middle (where pieces spawn), you can time a harassment chain just right to force the stack upwards, on top of where the next piece will spawn, causing them to lose the round.
I'm not super good at making ridiculously long chains yet, but I do notice a lot of players who do just kind of leave themselves open for stuff like this a lot. I just wait for what looks like a hard to recover spot and drop a combo, usually winning the game against opponents with more technical finesse.
