    Okay... I'm digging this... Really good DBX vibes... I'm even feeling some, like... Almost distressor mojo with some of those more extreme settings in parallel. I love it when plugin developers take advantage of the fact that they're making plugins... And they're not locked into limiting them to a box of only the exact function of the original piece of hardware.

      Its very DBX like. I like even so much that I sourced the hardware version 2 weeks ago and bought it.

    Also no offence but how can you fairly compare the Softube when it is a 165 model and has full A/R control? You'd have to know to set it precisely to what the internal A/R is of the VCE 118 to compare fairly.

    the resonance around 440hz is ringing out so much, kinda destroy the drum groove...i like compressor off more honestly but a very useful tool to have...great vid!!

    Interesting, I think this plugin is more useful as a parallel compressor as you demonstrated in the second part of the video. I didn't really enjoy it as a normal above threshold compressor full blend in. Far too snappy sound for my taste. For this use I think the hardware you have but also the waves and softube plugins sound much better...

    Really wasnt a fan of this plugin. Your unit sounds WAY better . To me, this sounds more like a transient shaper. Very digital and pokey. The Arturia VCA comp is much more musical and analog to my ears. In fact all oif their analog modelled plugins are top notch - their 1176 kills even UAs. I would say they are the best at this in the industry, shame they are so criminally underrated

      What do you consider digital?

    • @lucasturney4269
      @lucasturney4269 6 месяцев назад

      Huh. I just noticed that WhiteNoiseStudio already beat to asking what you mean by it sounding "digital." I ask because that has become a popular thought thrown out in a lot of conversations about plugins, but I rarely find anyone who can make even a slight correlation between it being digital and the actual character of a tool.

    • @Rhuggins
      @Rhuggins 6 месяцев назад

      By digital I can articulate it as follows: “linear”. Linear in terms of frequency response, harmonic saturation, compression (or expansion) action/transfer curve. Purely Digital compressors (not analog emulations), especially stock ones or older ones- can have a very sharp transient response and not have as “musical” of an envelope. Analog, depending on the design, can also be similarly “sharp” but often times the transformers and the amplifiers themselves can soften some of this transient in a musical way.
      I’m not saying that this particular plugin lacks harmonics or a box tone. Fuse is top of the line when it comes to analog emulations. What I mean to say is that this to me kind of sounds like a digital sounding transient expander, to me. Could be that i’m not a fan of the unit being modeled here

      I agree with you I also find this compressor too snappy. Transients come out too agressive and not very enjoyable at least when it's not used as a parallel compressor @@Rhuggins

    I like the dbx 118 more than the 160a; I can hear the attack pocking through with the 118, and it sounds clearer in the top end while the 160a sounds very dark. This plugin is the perfect tool to pair with the UAD dbx 160.

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah the 160a is very dark. That’s why I eq before using it to counter that. It’s also part of that typical dbx 160a sound. The softube was actually quite disappointing for me, didn’t get that dbx sound at all, it’s quite harsh. Could’ve been basically any other type of compressor.

    Nothing special.....just a compressor. AA grey is way better along with the Diamond transient

      It gets the kick out in the forefront without any "mucho mas" sidechaining, but yeah Acust-Audio definitely has more than one way to skin a cat:
      e.g. Ivory 5 Suite --> ASH/ASH Ultra --> L A C E / Ivory 5 Mastering Limiter
      e.g. Midnight Flat --> Acust Audio JAM --> L A C E / Ivory 5 Mastering Limiter / Arctic
      e.g. Tiger M.U. --> Pumpkin Pro --> Green 5 Ultra EQ --> ASH Ultra --> L A C E

    Maybe throw in Arturia too (VCA-65 is based on the dbx165)?

    • @whitenoisestudio
      @whitenoisestudio  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah seems like a good idea. All older dbx compressors use the same schematic anyway.

    I hope Softube ads fuse to console 1! that would be the ultimate, I always love fuse so much

    Again. I write it everywhere. Run that plugin through the same mic pre that your analog gear goes through, THEN compare that sound!

    You were right by the way. I really did not want to buy another DBS plugin but at $29 intro price I just went for it. The Waves is awful, as are all their "analog modeled" plugins (it's their unique stuff that is actually good sometimes, and Softube is a nice compressor, far better than the Waves, but in fact the Fuse Audio sounds better again. I have to compare it to the UAD at some point.
    Definitely no more DBX emulations for me now, no matter what. This is the best one, so there's that.
    I will say, I do like proper GR meters, we are in the digital domain, there was no need to follow the hardware in that regard whatsoever and it was almost a dealbreaker for me, but I decided to overlook it just this once.
    Edit, I actually decided against it last minute at checkout, can't live without GR meter, simple as that. I was in process of checking out when posting here. The UAD one is good and models the 160 without the attack and release of the 165 like the Softube/Arturia and has wet/dry added now also, so I'll just stick to that.

    Solid overview, nice A/B(C/D)-ing of the hardware and plugins too. I've been jumping around between DBX emulations for *far too long, unable to happily settle on any one (you're spot-on with the fact that some just sound like a generic VCA, though sometimes darkened/rolled-off.) I need that wooden **thmack** to happen. We'll see if this scratches that itch.

    Excellent demo Marlon.
    The Fuse VCE 118 seems to add the character if you dial it right. I like that it's there if you choose to have it.
    Interesting on the Softube VCA compressor in the demo, it was almost too clean for this drum mix. However I'm using mine, oddly enough because it's clean sounding, on an effect send channel working as my ducking compressor for my delay/reverb.

    This is dope this plugin, but also the new upgrade of Acustica Audio Green 5 Ultra suite is a mean and green machine I tell ya' that!!!! The Green 5 Ultra compressor is the first compressor to have a fast and slow threshold knobs separately. With gradual and sharp knee in parallel with smoothe downward compression!
