This viral legend takes its title from an old playground game enjoyed by Japanese children… but much like “Ring Around the Rosy,” which originated with Europe’s bubonic plague, its innocence is now tainted by a grotesque tale of war, sadism and unimaginable horror.
The word “Kagome” can be roughly translated as “circle,” but also can be interpreted as “cage” or “surround.” Most properly the game would be called “Circle You, Circle You.” The rules vary depending on tradition, but in one version a group of children choose one of their number to stand stationary, while the others form a circle around them, chanting a song beginning with “Circle You, Circle You” as they try to scare them with sudden moves, loud sounds or creepy faces. If the chosen child flinches, they lose.
No one knows for sure how long ago the game was invented… but the most bizarre and horrific account of “Kagome Kagome” dates back to 1942, at an orphanage in Japan’s Shimane Prefecture. According to documentation obtained by the Allies from captured German facilities, Nazi officials had occupied the isolated orphanage in order to conduct classified experiments on the children. The experiments - which authorities insisted take place outside of Germany to avoid negative publicity - involved the search for an alleged “kill switch” within the human brain, which, when activated, theoretically initiates the slow, deliberate process of physical aging and the eventual death of the body. Nazi scientists theorized that locating, isolating and removing this kill switch while a person is still young could make that person virtually immortal.
Numerous child and adult subjects met an untimely end as the Nazi doctors repeatedly tried and failed in their attempts to remove this specific area of the brain - which they had ultimately isolated in the region of the cerebellum which controls subconcious brian activity. The countless innocents who died from the procedure were buried in the woods surrounding the orphanage, and no record of their names is listed in the documentation.
Finally, it seems the doctors achieved success with one subject, a very young girl. Her heart stopped during the operation, but she was revived with electric shocks. Strangely, this happened repeatedly, with her heart often stopping while she slept, but she could be easily revived afterward and appeared to be normal… despite displaying rather odd behavior. The procedure was deemed a success, and repeated on several other children with similar results.
That’s when the game of “Kagome Kagome” is first mentioned in the documents.
Post-surgery, the child subjects were coherent and could converse normally with their doctors, but later wandered the corridors of the orphanage with calm, euphoric smiles on their faces - as if they shared a wonderful secret. However, when a single child was alone with one of the doctors or caretakers, their expressions were said to change instantly to a look of pure malice and diabolical hatred. They began to single out various adult watchers, circling them and chanting the words of the game: “Kagome Kagome”… Circle You, Circle You…
By the end of the war, when the experiment was shut down, many of the scientists and accompanying personnel had already abandoned the orphanage for reasons not given in the documents. The final entries give no indication what happened to the children; the only account comes from one of four remaining caretakers, who left just before Allied forces entered the area: he writes that the children approached him, smiling, asking him to play one last game of “Kagome Kagome.” He mentions that the looks on their faces were so horrifying that he turned and ran from the building, never looking back.
Kagome_02 Today, the abandoned orphanage is still standing, but locals steadfastly refuse to come anywhere near it. They claim the woods surrounding the building are filled with strange, gnarled tree stumps which resemble human bodies. They also say that the children are still inside… not ghosts, but very much alive, cursed with eternal life thanks to the doctors’ surgical tampering.
Some skeptical visitors have explored the grounds, and a few claim to have actually seen the children. The kids are described as more or less normal-looking, but bear the scars of their surgeries, and their expressions are strangely angelic. They invite the visitors to play their game, with its one simple rule: if you flinch… you lose.
Those who claim to have played the game of “Kagome Kagome” with the children say that the kids’ facial expressions suddenly turned hideous… even monstrous, inhuman forms. Those who managed to return from the orphanage reported that, despite their absolute horror, they somehow managed not to flinch.
However, several others who explored the area have never returned, and are still listed as missing.

Actually, Japanese names are extremely complex, because two people could spell their names with the exact same characters but pronounce them drastically different! The name "Kagome" has numerous meanings, meanings such as basket weaver, eyes in a basket, or (the most fitting in Inuyasha's case) Lost. It's not a traditional Japanese name, as it is more seen as a word and less as a name (like how english has Leaf and River and Sage as names) .

It is creepy as hell. If I'm correct, it's about a person/group, who keeps luring and killing children, and their souls can never leave the house. And if I go there, they ask me to play with them. Firstly, it's innocent, but soon I realize, they don't want me to leave. They don't let me go, circling me, until the killer comes.

Lemme explain.
In 1942 during the war, the Nazis decided to go to an orphanage and experimented on the children there. They had a “death switch” with killed the children. Fortunately, one lucky little girl, survived but whenever she fell asleep, sometimes her heart would stop. The orphanage still stands and people refuse to go near it because of the horrifying story. At the woods, there will be dead bodies of the children (I believe) and some say, when you go inside down the hall into the farthest room, there will be children there. They want to play with you with only one simple rule. Don’t flinch or you loose. Sometimes they would make insanely creepy faces kinda like in 3:47 when you see Miku smiling as she is covered in blood. They would make creepy inhuman faces and some didn’t flinch and made it out alive. Some went and ended up going missing. Either way, the children are not ghosts, they are alive because of the doctors experiments. Also I kinda found 3:47 disturbing as fuck
This brings back memories ^^' I had a school project about the "Nazi time" in school and decided to dedicate it to Josef Mengele, a fked up doctor, who used to do fked up things with kids. Also presented this song to my class and they were spooked.

I feel like some of the elements that make this song creepier is how it refers to you, saying to close your eyes and they'll "circle you, circle you" with the imagery of all of them trapping you in a circle. And how lizz's voice is so sweet and calm while singing this, which is also why horror movies often use children. Also the fact that all of this actually happened.

Those Nazi doctors removed something of the children’s brain called cerebellum, some have died and became unsuccessful. But they achieved success cause of a little girl, for some reason the girl’s heartbeat stopped when she slept but the Nazi doctors revived her with defibrillator. I showed my friend this song and explained everything about this, she got scared just a little. And that orphanage still exists to this day.

3:57 one of the most brutal Nazi experiments was cutting out pieces of peoples (mostly polish and jewish women) legs and arms sometimes cutting off the whole limbs, and trying to implant it to amputated soldiers.
She was sent to the Russian as a gift from the nazis for helping them with something i cant remember but the russians cut her arm off to replace it with a bionic arm they were working on but gave her back and disappeared from the whole project (specifically in Japan) and the girl was the only one with her "kill switch" still in her brain, the other kids and care takers had theirs removed by the nazis and survived it but spiraled down into insanity and eventually scared those Nazi scientists away

When i first read the legend i started crying, not because it was scary,no. Because the poor kids had to go through that, what scienists do for immortality. Its really fucked up that children get experimented on right now, everywhere in the world, thats so heartbreaking. it wasnt their fault.

This song is about the theory of WWII or how fucking terrifying it is to be the Oni... Depending on the region of Japan, the game could be that the Oni has to stay still and not fidget while they see the the children that form a circle around the Oni, lock arms and are able to mess with the Oni by making faces, tapping the Oni, or moving the circle around. The other way is that people lock arms in a circle like the last one, except the Oni gets to switch places with the person if they guess right.
