I'm a 60-year old classic rock and blues guy for the most part, but to me these guys are right up there with the best musicians ever to come arouond. They put all of their emotion into their music and they fucking nailed it!
From what I can remember there was a vacuum that needed to be filled at the time, Radiohead and The Prodigy filled that. Also there seemed to be a certain amount of ambition and hunger involved in both these acts. Of course having the right record company, PA and manager helps too. The internet homogenizes everything so you may not see this kind of thing too often in the future.
This, in my opinion, was the coolest moment ever for Radiohead. I know they did a lot of great stuff after, but they were never as cool as there were in that moment.
Radiohead were the first band I saw in my first term at Sheffield university in September 94 a few days after My Iron Lung was released. They didn’t even play in the bigger room of the student Union. I remember they played this and I was totally blown away and wondered what the hell I had just seen. So glad I saw them in an intimate venue at the peak of their powers.
The more I see Radiohead live, the more certain I am of the following: 1. Thom Yorke is the most captivating frontman ever. 2. Radiohead's better live than on their albums which is to say...holy crap.

The best ever performance of a Radiohead track commitment and soul to the max and the intensity hasn't ever been reproduced in my opinion back from when I saw this live in the day
two observations - at 3:33 - notice the person in the red shirt sitting down with their hand on their jaw, looking the other way, pred stiff, as if at a poetry reading.. and at 1:55, bloody hell, Jonny's guitar string was closer to Jools Holland than his fretboard! what a legend!
I don't think Radiohead has ever sounded as passionate as they did on The Bends. It was their first 10/10 album in my book. I was 18 when this album came out so at an optimal age to absolutely fall in love with it and for it to become an essential album in my inner musical library. Ok Computer is still my all time favorite album though and I've loved almost everything they've done since. I don't agree with people who underrate this album or see it as "dated" just because it's heavily guitar based or doesn't sound like the aesthetics of 2020. Why should it? It was done in 95 and in 95 it sounded extremely fresh and to me all these songs sound just as timeless as they did already then. Many of these songs are still musically more interesting and moving than majority of what I hear today.
In retrospect, this song (album) is a tad 90s and, by definition, overwrought. Yet they perform it with such powerhouse precision, its absolutely astounding.
as i know, you can choose a bridge that allows you have the strings easily pull out. Some old fender guitars, like jaguars and jazzmasters, have that kind of bridge. Or you can detune your guitar so the string would be easily pulled out off.
There's a ball that comes on the end of strings drilled onto his pickguard that he latches the string onto and then picks as he bends it from the other side. You can see the ball when he does it the first time and hear the string click when he sets it in the groove right before he does it a second time.
Simple the best live performance I've ever had the privilege to watch. Remembering when musicians could do this ? Unlike today's mealie mouthed audio tuned, voice enhanced polished to an inch of their lives excuse for singers. So glad to have been around to appreciate and witness this first hand the 3 times I've got to experience them live in Ireland 🇮🇪 The stuff that makes life long memories Thanks for the music Tom, Jonny and the rest of the band Radiohead will always be my number one all time favourite band.
Luckily my bandmate has a couple teles among a dozen other guitars but it still didn't sound like John's but I wasn't expecting it to sound exactly like it but at least close which it did thanks to contributions from my bassist, guitarist and another friend who helped by letting me borrow pedals and effects board so I sounded kind of close. But all that mattered was that we as a band sounded good. I can't say anything about the singing though
Gavin Gratza thanks I appreciate it. Was this the one that was stolen? I have a way older friend who showed me this vid and told me about his guitar getting stolen
i'm not sure. i don't think so. i know one of his tele's were stolen either on the pablo honey or the bends tour. I believe the guitar that was stolen and all his subsequent tele's were telecaster plus's, which were manufactured in the nineties and had the dual red humbucker lace sensors with a blue in the neck
Yep. This is the one of the stolen ones. Jonny also had one in Ebony Frost which was stolen along with the rest of the gear, but it was recovered and is now in Jonny's possession.
It's Johnny. It's kinda simple (like 3 notes - on the album version) but for reasons I can't explain something about it uplifts maybe more than any other solo (of any band) I can think of.
Jonny plays that guitar while swinging it around and still hits notes, The man is a musical powerhouse.
that's because he deadens the strings he doesn't want to ring out. Much easier with heavy distortion
@@robmaddison8645 Thanks for your input, Buzz Killington.

Best part!! 😂
My favorite version of this song. Get chills everytime. Fucking johnny greenwood makes this performance legendary..
It was like a neophyte Nietzsche coming on to Philosophy TV. That audience was a bit blown away.

Jonny's guitar is loud and clear and so loud and I love it
Thanks for sharing !!
Aya Ch was lucky enough to see them live 2 months after this they sang every song of the bends àlbulm and a couple of Pablo àlbulm
Aya Ch he uses the Marshall Shredmaster
Bot. Reported.
@@fdfsdfsvsfgsg4888Don't care. Didn't ask.
Could you imagine if a band went on Jools Holland and played like that now? Yeah, me neither.
Bands don’t play like this any more. Ful stop. Period.

I agree
The performance of Paranoid Android on Jools Holland in '97 was a bit better.
@@anthonyfuqua6988 that's a legendary performance, and yes, better than this - but I still think that they looked cooler here.

Thom's voice is really exceptional.

The value of a chill and a focused rhythm section x
The best performance on Jools Holland ever!
Hard to argue
Different genre completely, but foals' red sox pugie live at jools Holland is a close second place imo

They just sit there looking unimpressed not realising that they're watching one of the greatest bands of all time.
A few people are into it tho.
I saw this performance when I was eleven years old, on TV of course, this introduced me to Radiohead, and they became one of my top 5 fav bands ever.
Glastonbury 97 was probably the best gig I’ve ever seen them play.
Was absolutely awesome
How many e strings has Johnny gone through in his lifetime
How many e strings has any guitarist ever?
