    Google says this car has 357 lb ft of torque which is 3 lb ft more than my W166 GLE400 that runs petrol/gasoline. So I'm feeling confident to tow with my GLE now! In fact, you are already pulling the biggest trailer I would ever consider towing! :) Thank you for sharing a real video of your towing with the car, and not just a bunch of useless talking like most other videos. This is very helpful!!

    • @maximusfuscus
      @maximusfuscus  Год назад +3

      Yes but don’t forget where that torque is available. For the diesels it’s low to mid range RPM, exactly where you need it. Gasoline ones may rev quite a bit higher especially on steep inclines. Although I am towing this large of a trailer I would recommend a smaller one (up to 25 ft - this one is 27) for SUVs due to side winds dangers. Good luck!

    I've towed a roughly 6000lb traler traveler cross country this year at 8800 miles average about 12mpg.
    Gl320
    Def had cooling issues.
    Have amsoil low toxicity coolant.
    Dash gauge is 100% off, was running at 222-232f that's NOT in the worst heat, ac off, only on on downhills makes huge diff.
    Use obd meter not dash.
    Tranny was always at 100c
    Brakes never overheated
    Worst pull is by Wyoming around 80f day up to 9000feet, was def dying, had to keep low speeds, stop to cool
    Mount Rushmore also rough, back to main city
    Stretched transfer case chain, easy fix, replaced chain only, not guide. Guide support let snapped, had to fabe a support leg for the guide to fix flawed design
    Other issues, stutter at low torque prob air leak at turbo
    Oil cooler seals leaking I believe
    Injector seals replaced sprior to trip, one was bad

    • @maximusfuscus

      That’s a bit heavy, once you put all your gear in it will be quite a bit more. Your main issue will be the tongue weight and the side winds. Be careful. And check the rear axle at the scale once all loaded up and weight distribution leveled. If it’s over, or a lot over, you have a problem. Legal, safety and wear and tear issues. Let me know how it works.

    • @maximusfuscus
      @maximusfuscus  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, I would but not for towing this size of a trailer. For a smaller one and everyday use, yes. The ML CDI diesel did not have an AdBlue system, that made it a little more reliable. Once you properly updgrade the oil cooler seals (big job) to eliminate oil leaks and maintain it well it’s a beast of an SUV. You can find good used ones decently priced.

    • @maximusfuscus
      @maximusfuscus  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi. Regular suspension. Tongue weight was at max allowed for the rear axle and a bit more at times when I had 3 occupants, full 100L diesel tank. I was also removing the batteries and gas tanks from the front of the trailer and relocating them in the back. Air suspension would help but wouldn’t make it legal. So I was pushing it but also watching it at the scales often, I had a free commercial scale near by. Wouldn’t recommend that much of a trailer for the ML. The GL I used briefly was quite a bit more stable. Longer, heavier and standard air suspension.

    Can you give the weights of your particular travel trailer? You moved the propane tanks to the back to save tongue weight? Also, what kind of fuel economy have you seen?

    • @maximusfuscus
      @maximusfuscus  2 года назад +2

      5450 lbs empty. Yes, I experimented shifting weights at the back to save tongue weight, that way I was 100% legal for my 3 weight ratings on the vehicle (GVWR total, front and most importantly rear). Confirmed ar the scale. I was getting 18 litres/100km (13 MPG) on average but this is a high altitutde, high winds area year round. In other conditions (closer to the West Coast) I saw even 16.5 litres (14.2 MPG) on the highway. At worst, with bad head winds I saw 21 litres (11.2 MPG). Never underpowered. The weight of the trailer itself is not a real issue, the ML was rated for 7,200 lbs. The side wind gusts were always the danger.

    • @maximusfuscus
      @maximusfuscus  2 года назад +1

      I eventually left the propane at the front and added other water ballast at the back, it helps quite a bit with tongue weight.

    Hello Folks - video(s) are great with cool drone footage. Everyone's comments have been very useful as I'm new to towing. I'd appreciate you're opinion as I'm anxious if I'd made the right decision with my choice of vehicles. I've a 2016 GL450 V6 with factory hitch (now done 8000 miles) and we've brought a FR Alfa Wolf 29ft travel trailer which is 5400lb dry - 600 Hitch weight. We plan to drive 6000 miles around the western US national parks over a 10 week period which means over some mountainous terrain. Is this set up capable or are I better off with a truck ? Thanks in advance, Paul

    • @maximusfuscus
      @maximusfuscus  Год назад

      If you already have both vehicles I would correctly hook them up with a decent weight distribution hitch and take them to a scale. Verify front and rear axles + total GVWR (they are all written on the door sticker) to see if you are close over when the trailer is empty. Remember you will have fuel in the vehicle, probably a lot of luggage, gear, food, beer, etc…they add up quickly. The GL should tow the described trailer with no issues however you want to be legal in the case of an unwanted accident. Also watch the side winds, don’t drive too fast and be careful when passing or being passed by big rigs. 29 ft is quite long. If you have a truck ready it would give you more peace of mind when it comes to wind stability but it’a not a guarantee unless the truck is a heavy duty. The mountains are an issue only when descending steep, long inclines. You don’t want to cook (and lose) the brakes. Use manual downshifting to assist.

      @@paulthomas3316 - I see. Fuel up the GL, put some people inside (depending how many you’ll take) and weigh its rear axle. You will see how much you can spare. Then add the theoretical tongue weight of the RV trailer and determine how much (if) you are over the number. Don’t forget you are also adding a battery (mandatory for emergency trailer disconnect brake) and the propane tanks - which at times I used to carry them inside the trailer to the back. I also used to add a ballast at the rear of my trailer in order to keep the axle weight in check. Also didn’t put any gear at the front of the trailer. Don’t forget to add the weight of the WD system itself, that will help with dostribution ans stability but will add some pounds. By the way, I also towed with a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel. It towed great but when all loaded up I was still overweight, so only an HD truck will ensure you have room to spare. I did that too but it was overkill to me. Your GL is more than capable to tow this from a power/braking point of view. My GL350 Bluetec did great. My only issue in the prairies was side winds. The Rockies of British Columbia were no problem.

    • @maximusfuscus

      Hi. I had factory. It should be ok but check the tongue weight before doing it. It may press too much on the rear axle and make it lillegal/chew the tires excessivley. Otherwise the lenght will be only a driver/inconvenience issue. The weight is ok. Also, make sure to use the “off road” button when manouvering at the launch site, especially when pulling the boat out. This will engage low range and protect the transmission.

    There is no doubt thay such small trailer would be an easier tow with German SUV vs. half ton truck. Truck crowd doesnt understand that low center of gravity, short rear overhang, wider independent suspension, better brakes are more important than a TV ad where their truck is shown when towing a trailer. 3/4 or one ton can provide a feeling "of better stability", but good luck with any emergency maneuvers. They will go straight like Titanic into the iceberg.

    Wow! 1st: Tow ratings are determined using flat bed trailers on short distance special courses, NOT 9’ high RV’s. Big Difference. 2nd: Because of this you should never tow more than 75-80% of max tow/cargo capacities given by manufacturers. Called Prudent Man’s towing recommendation. 3rd: The wheel base on this SUV TV is waaaaay too short for this size RV. 4th: Empty weight 5400 lbs (Loaded 6400?). 5th: Max TV tow is 7200 lbs x 80%= 5760 lbs safe & sane amount. IMHO still way too much for this short wheel base SUV vehicle. 6th: Max payload 1442 lbs x 80%= 1153 lbs safe & sane cargo amt. 7th: Loaded RV 6400 x 12% tongue weight= 770 lbs + 2 adults (350) + hitch/W-D (100) + tools/junk in car (100 lbs) = 1320 lbs. 8th: You should never load back of RV (behind axles) with weight. You have a tow rack (lbs ?), (full ?) 2 propane bottles, (full?) 2 fuel tanks + spare tire/rack (150 lbs? on bumper ). Just because your owners manual/door sticker says it can tow something, doesn’t mean it can stop or maneuver in emergency situation. In an emergency that 6400 lb RV would push that short wheel base SUV vehicle around like a kid pushing a Tonka trunk. Well, stay safe (and lucky, I guess) out there.

      One thing that everybody seems to leave out of the equation is driver skill. This beaten to death “wheelbase” argument is getting so old. It’s not like if you drive a dually F450 it will guarantee safety, I’ve seen 5th wheels and small trailers with big trucks belly up. I’ve seen lots of semis belly up because of extreme winds. It’s also about what kind of suspension the vehicle has, the four corners are attached the the wheelbase, no? Besides, put an F150 near an F350. There isn’t much difference in wheelbase, I would say not at all. But they obviously can’t tow the same, right? As far as breaking goes this setup was more than adequate, I had wildlife cross at night where I had to swerve and break heavy, no issues at all. The trailer is braked too. The ML’s brakes where large and cooled, never had fade. Driving on long downhills will cook your brakes no matter what you drive (seen those runaway ramps?) if you don’t know what you’re doing and relying only on the pedal. And why not put anything at the back of the trailer? I don’t see any issue as long as it’s not too heavy. The trailer has 2000 lbs payload in total. So in theory you have some validity but my point is the setup was legal and safe. Was it a stretch? Might be for the majority of drivers, that’s exactly why in the end I stated a shorter trailer is advisable. Btw, I towed this trailer with Ram 1500 Ecodiesel, Ford F150, Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi, Chevrolet HD 2500, Ford F250 Powerstroke. The HDs definitely had an edge in stability and braking but the half tons were not much better than the ML. Also the 6.2 V8 gas on the Chevrolet HD was struggling uphill compared with the Mercedes 3.0 diesel.

      Driver skill will never make up for having the correct vehicle. Don’t know how driver skill is going to make your frame, axles and brakes stronger? You don’t put weight behind the axle because it adds to sway. Numerous videos on here about that with videos showing what happens when you load weight on the back. Wow, That is common towing knowledge. So much for “skill”! Half tons are not really great tow vehicles for a camper this long and probably weight. They are no more than grocery-getters with light duty frames, brakes, axles; like your Mercedes. Sorry, but your vehicle is not safe for that size/length RV. We have a 6.4L Ram with 25’ 5th wheel (7200-7400 lbs). We can accelerate up hill. Doubt that 6.2L could not do the same in tow mode vs your 3.0 diesel. @@maximusfuscus
