- The Master's Edition is a martial arts film/artistic documentary by Shai-Hai that reflects the inner world of Japanese master Shinjo Kiyohide, a modern day Samurai and living Karate legend. This unique glimpse into the world of the Master is like a treasure in a chest into which we are rarely granted the privilege of looking inside. This film depicts ancient practical knowledge in a wide range of impressive and innovative demonstrations, a profound, forgotten philosophy and living and learning guidelines that will help the viewer, regardless of his or her background, to understand the "Aji", that secret ingredient, that personal touch, that rare quality, that unknown element that transforms an ordinary person into an outstanding individual, a true master.

My favorite Karate video of all time.i watch this at least once a week❤
Watching this video takes me back 40 years, to my time in the dojo, each punch to be better than the one before, even to the one hundredth. Master Shinjo is the finest ambassador for Uichi Ryu there is. Makes me want to be in his dojo,,,,,,even at age 83. May the spirit of this man live in Uechi Ryu forever.
I watch this every few days and never get tired of it....
Beautiful, Deceiving, and Deadly!
I love this video and have watched a thousand times. This is a basic but strong form of Karate. This is one of 2 of the best Uechi Ryu DVDs out there
Good morning from The Bronx NYC one of my top documentary for any karateka to learn the true history of system that started in Okinawan. I watched it several times and I highly recommend it to any karateka to watch and learn. Gung-ho
Thank you for posting! As a Shotokan and BJJ practitioner, I am a HUGE fan of the Okinawan SUPERMAN! Visited Israel once, and Best Wishes for a Great 2023!
Very realistic karate for real life situations when in a vulnerable environment or life threatening circumstances.
🙌👏🙌👏🙌❤️
Uechi ryu saved my life and gave me structure. Studied it for 4 years and my dojo had strife and split, sensei ended having back problems and he had to stop teaching. I will always think of uechi ryu everyday for as long as i live
Osu !
Brother, I hope you one day return to a Uechi Ryu Dojo. Come back home...
My vision is augmented.

Uechi Ryu gave me discipline. Thank you to my Sensei Robert Campbell for teaching this beautiful art which gave me the structure I needed. OSS!
Stunning and powerful karate. And very skillfulled students. No circus-like shows at all.
Highly skilled students and great demonstrations. Sticking to the point. No ego or display of inferiority complex. Good students comes from good teacher and self discipline. Beautiful video.
I watch this 3 times a week,my favorite Uechi video!Shinyu Gushi a very close second!!!
Powerful, focused, direct and explosive karate. Without any doubt, Uechi-Ryu is a true combat style with no fancy techniques. Superb karate.
Kiyohide Sensei is an absolute credit to the tradition of Karate Do. Also, solid and high level demonstrations by the participants. Karateka who can do the business 🙂
this is real karate, the essence of karate. not just demonstration. very practical
In a time of my youth...Uechi Ryu. Sensei Julius Scott, his Sensei...Seiyo Shinjo on Okinawa, mid 1960's, while in USAF. One of Sensei Scott's students was able to be stationed on Okinawa in USAF. The student was able to study Uechi Ryu in Okinawa. Respect.
Time to switch from shotokan to this! This is great for tight spaces
Coming from an mma/muay thai background (and a bit of southern kungfu in a distant past), this is a form of karate I can get with. Simple, practical, efficient, straight to the point. The moves don't look overcomplicated or like they go against the grain of natural human instincts.
I think uechi is simple but impossible to master. Its all in the first kata
The INCREDIBLE conditioning of this style make it appeal to me. Not many instructors are breaking two or three baseball bats with their shins My God this guy is so focused ....he could kill with one strike for certain No BS in this style.
I met uechi ryu decendent, sadly don't remember his name. I believe he turned 21 at the time. Didn't realize the magnitude of what I had experienced till later lol. Very kind man and just showed us what he knew. Great experience. I am not worthy lol, my priorities were shit at the time and my parents put me into uechi ryu, would never imagine the impact it would have on my life
People mock karate based on the water down version found in the U.S. and Europe. But Okinawan Karate is the real deal. The punches you see demonstrated in this video don't look like much, but when you get hit by one it is like getting hit by a truck. I know firsthand.
получается корпус не работает .Везде корпус прямо, нет волны в ударе и нет отклонений... В драке динамика большая и смещение корпуса гарантировано.
Thank you a lot for a great job! Shinjo is incredible Master!
Normally karate documentaries are pretty bad in my opinion, but this one has been hitting it on the head. In my 8 years of study, this goes over all of the things I learned up to black belt without gentrifying or making it look "extra lethal". This shit just hurt (maybe because the dojo I attended had concrete floors and we didn't use any pads in the sparring department). Makes me proud to be a past student of the style. Sucks that I can't find enough time for the gi anymore!
Hint to anyone who's practicing this style right now: Focus on the hidden diagonals of all the techniques, loosen up only a little, and study for the black belt exam holy shit I did not expect how long that would be. :)
Also, just to add a few more miscellaneous things:
*If you're not confident in your koken (the cupped hand strike thingy, I've been out of dojo for a while and can't remember exactly what it's called) you can replace it with a back fist to the nose. That usually works if you're in a street fight and you don't want to pay for the legal fees in a lawsuit!
*The kata seriously DO NOT TEACH YOU ABOUT DIAGONALS. EVERYTHING IS DIAGONALS IN THIS STYLE. DO THE BUNKAI. I MAY HAVE ONLY 8 YEARS BUT DIAGONALS DIAGONALS DIAGONALS.
*Seriously, do the secondary exercises. I regret not doing them when I could because they warm up your brain on your forms at the beginning of the class and allow you to analyze what needs to be fixed that day.
*Beat the absolute fuck out of the enemy and stay ready for anything. If you get on the ground (in my limited experience) you're a little more fucked than some other styles (source: have a couple friends from other arts and styles. Bjj is officially my worst nightmare). Make sure you're ready to compensate if somebody gets too close or too grabby. And if you do go down make sure they're coming down to hell with you.
*Uechi Ryu is, in my opinion and limited knowledge of both boxing and uechi-ryu, the closest you can get to boxing in karate. There's a very blunt spirit about this style, at least on the surface level.
*When you get into sanchin stance, you will feel mildly stupid. This is normal. Don't copy anyone else's foot positions or ratios exactly because everyone is built different.
*When you're in any stance, remember to keep muscles partially locked: not completely loose or tense. This especially applies to the abdominals and your lats (focus on shoulder position and posture especially if you have broad shoulders) where you'll be taking most of your damage. Think of it as a ballistics vest: you want to be a layer of hard surrounding a soft but maneuverable interior (hence the palm over fist at the end of sanchin - remember that). Also, don't put so much power into your strikes that you compromise part or all of this armor. It's better to have a soft strike and a fallback plan than a hard strike and no way back to safety. Breathing will help you regulate this along with just generally managing your armor.
*Another advanced mindset (because Uechi-Ryu is all about mindset) is to absolutely minimize the number of movements you need to do. Case in point, the bread butter combo seen in seisan bunkai (especially the bit with the armed opponent) is open/outside circle block into any strike ever or grapple with the same hand. (Absolutely scared the shit out of my aforementioned Bjj friend, it worked once before he dunked my ass because, again, its a nightmare.)
And the number one thing anyone practicing any fighting style should remember: Holy shit, run. If you don't have to engage do not engage. Simply GTFO and find help elsewhere. You are not a god. If you try to fistfight a gunman, you will die. I have had to tell this to people. You will not look cool if you die.
Good luck and stay safe out there! As my sensei would say: "let's hope you never really need to use this."
EDIT: If something I say here is contradicted in this video or by your sensei, please take their word for it. I'm just a 2nd-degree wannabe who spent too much time ranking up.
This is by far one of the Best Video made for Uechi Ryu Karate and It's History. I really liked the way The Master explained everything about it's History, The Sensei's, The evolotion of Uechi rye Karate through the years, The Techniques displayed and kata's, The hard core training,( I even had a Master hit me with a stick in the shin or head for that matter when he wanted us to train hard and toughing up) The Music was wonderful wish it had some subtitles what the man was singing. It really explained a lot of the Uechi Ryu Karate into light. I've seen a lot of videos on different Karate Style and this one is one of my Favorite ones. I've been in the Martial Arts all my life even though I don't teach anymore almost 50 back problems, I've taught for 15 yrs, I went from watching Kung Fu movies in middle school at 11 then 18 to 1 yr of Aikido, 2 yrs kickboxing, 8 yrs Olympic TKD teaching, 2 yrs BJJ/ MMA training. It still amazes me how many Master or students in the martial arts world have really good kata, techniques, and of course videos that show their love for the life of Martial Arts. I still consider myself a student because I'm always learning something new, whether it's viewing a video of a technique in a different Martial Art or watching a kinda act decency from one person to another. Life is good.
Hope,, young people still learn this very effective Karate worldwide,,keep it alive for generations to come...so it never disappears.
Thanks Mr. Hai for give us this gem.
I am Okinawan Goju Ryu - love the extra flavor - this is so effective! Thank You. Please keep the instruction coming!
this art has a spirit that is completely just not in other styles of karate. I studied Shotokan and eventually became disillusioned with it for its lack of reality. I knew that something was missing. it was the spirit that is alive in Uechi ryu. Unfortunately, there are no practitioners of it where I live.
Just train sanchin kata every day and find a friend to spar with. Just have them punch you until your block is automatic. Condition hands(spear hand, leopard fist, one knuckle fist, crane beak, bent thumb strike)and do finger pushups. Train kicks on a heavy bag at the gym, condition bent toe kick, stretch a lot. You can get the relaxation in a fight by training another martial art like judo
Great respect for Kyohide Sensei... the philosophy in the end is amazing and very inspiring... Excellent Karatekas keeping the standard high of their style. Many black belts these days don't have the basic standard of a black belt. Thank you for sharing.
true
Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing. This is a real karate in form and spirit and not an imitation of karate as we commonly seen today.
thank you .... south india (Bodhidharma) we have ancient fighting system but we lost , still little there ,like you masters in karate to world we learning........thank you
Excelente video gracias por compartir saludós desde el sur de la Patagonia-argentina
Thank you for this beautiful introduction to UECHI-RIU style
Very well done video, it shows Uechi Ryu as I have experienced it; deeply rooted in traditional training, powerful and effective. Thanks for sharing this.
I haven’t even finished watching and this is simply amazing. Thank you very much for uploading this. Amazingly beautiful.
Splendid!! Master Shinzo is truly a bushi. I put my deepest respect down to his feet.

Taekwondo YONMUJAE 🙏 thank you my friend
No uechi ryu here in Houston. Closest school i could find is in Austin, TX. We got kobayashi shorin ryu, goju ryu and shito ryu. All of these along with uechi ryu are my favorite styles of karate. If I was able to I would study all of them. So fascinating and different in terms of application and execution between the various okinawan styles of karate.

Awesome content for everyone. Thank you for sharing this.
Great video! The history of japanese martial arts is so rich. That free sparring session was amazing, by the way.
Beautiful, I am happy to know and witness this Karate is still alive.
Thank you ❤️
This is so beautiful to watch. I wished I knew a school around my area that teaches that same style. Absolutely great! Thank you for uploading the video.
Try Goju-Ryu or Kyokushinkai
Hermosa cultura , siempre quise aprender karate pero de okinawua, grandes maestros 🙏
Very well shot, and the music is fantastic. And love the philosophy part at the end.
Love it. This is how karate should be. Very impressive👊
This is so bad ass. Been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 6 years, but I would love to add this style to my training. Kiyohide Shinjo is very impressive! Would be so cool to get to train with him one day. One can dream!

But this karate style are so dirty
@@y.wirasmoyo what do you mean dirty?

. It is a particularly enthusiastic way of saying “yes” ....
Beautiful art in the Martial arts world.
I thank you very much for this video. Absolutely great! What a honor it must be to learn with such a master. Unfortunately, there is no uechi ryu dojo where I live. I would like to express my deep respect.
Thanks a lot for this amazing and lovely documentary. Thank you!
This style is like crane (machine), crushing everything in its way
Thank you Shai Hai!

שי חי כל הכבוד על ההשקעה של הסרט ,סרט מאוד יפה מסביר הרבה דברים ומספר על מאסטר שלך ועל השיטה יפה מאוד !
What a beautiful piece!
Uechi Ryu, kyokushin, ashihara and enshin karate are the best 👍
Shinjo Kiyohide has my utmost respect. Uechi-ryu is a hard style, even though they say it is half soft. There's no softness about it. Very few can actually train in Uechi-ryu due to hard conditioning. I can't think of any other karate style that would be more realistic. I train in Goju-ryu and I often wonder why do I need to spend years to learn 12 kata if I can have 8? Uechi started out with 3 kata and it still came out with a better system. Less is more.
Could you develop a bit more about why you think Uechi-Ryu is a better system than Goju-Ryu?
I'm having a hard time choosing between the two haha
Considering how Kanbun Uechi went to China to get the kung fu, the Chinese believed (at least decades ago) that less is better, with 3 being a significant number to them (three treasures). In many styles there, the first form usually contained all the system's principles and additional forms introduced supplementary concepts. It doesn't surprise me that Uechi Ryu is as effective as it is because they keep it simple.
@@bigwavesun I started in Chinese Wing Chun which also only has 3 forms to learn.its all principle and concept based.
@@evilxmetalband6532 I practice the same art!
@@jean4j_ goju does circle block with closed fist so there is no crab. Kinda removes the idea of mawashi uke as a way to "climb the arm" and controlling enemy centerline. Uechi againts a clothed opponent is plain unfair
Why someone would think this isn't potentially lethal is simply insane you can feel the power.
bunkai is legit like most arts the problem here is how many of us can actually pull that off when a punch is coming at us? thats the hard part about traditional styles. being able to punch and kick doesn't mean that you're using "said" style because you're just punching and kicking-anyone can do that. uechiryuu just like any other style have their own way of doing things, philosophy, and tactics in fighting and if you miss any of these you're not really using "said" style. i think the reason why non traditional stylists say it tma sucks is because many can't use the style in a fight and this is true. you're lucky if you can pull off a few of the bunkai off in a sparring match. using strikes is a different story though because thats where MMA comes in..its a mix of many different striking methods from different disciplines. when you don't have to care about philosophy and tactics but only worry about striking it because less constraining to the user.
Thank you so much for uploading, this is a very positive initiative to further promote Okinawa Karate-do, Uechi-Ryu, Kenyukai , Shinjo Sensei and yourself!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.

Hello I'm new to this channel and Uechi Ryu. My father in-law told me about Uechi Ryu and Okinawa because of his service in the Marine Corps Recon Battalions back in the day. He showed me one of the best schools in the U.S. in Amsterdam, NY. I was wondering if this open handed style would be complimented by some judo because of the grip fighting and throws.
空手50年やっててまだまだ未熟とは、空手家が目指す理想の空手家像ってどんな人物だろう、板垣恵介先生でも予想出来ないだろうな
I hear the kyokushin guys pushing the idea of it being the strongest style. I say Uechi Ryu could very well be the system that could shake the foundations of that belief. Uechi Ryu is a very rooted Style, with no wasted movement and very powerful both in its training methods and its delivery. This comment in no way is a wish to take away anything from the Kyokushin system, its merely to pass on the idea that Uechi Ryu has been very underrated down the years. I don't practice Uechi Ryu myself, just so you will know this is an unbiased comment.
Well the conditioning of Kyokushin is legit and they probably spar much more than Uechi-Ryu people do.
The problem of Kyokushin is the sparring/fighting ruleset and their kata. Their kata are very impractical (like Shotokan katas) and they couldn't care less about Bunkai from what I understand.
Respect Master Namaste 🙏

Master Shai Hai, Good afternoon Sir. I notice this video was created awhile ago (2015?). Thank you so much for making this video Sir. I can't help but wonder if you will be making another Uechi-Ryu video again in the near future? Greetings from New England - a fellow Uechi-Ryu Student and inspired protégé. With Much Respect.
Thanks Sensei Shai Hai
Great video. All things I practice in the Dojo are here. Great technique, it helps with checking the details, it also helps with reviewing the historical side of Uechi Ryu. What´s most amazing is the fact that even practicing in Mexico katas maintain the same form. It´s been a question I´ve made to myself during practice. Are we really learning the techqniques in it´s original style? I see not only the same katas, but also the hojondo part, hajiki, tenchin, etc.
