The way use English , Hertfordshire, is viewed as three different words, hert-ford is a comfortable compound word but the shire bit feels weird to say next to ford so we break them apart as we say it. Idk if that helps but English is spoken differently in many different places it’s just easiest to scrutinize American English bc it’s the easiest English to speak next to Regular English.
