I would encourage everyone, regardless of their zones, to follow Jenna. I see that a lot of people here benefit from her experience in a specific zone, but there is a great value in all of her videos because she is explaining why things work or don't. All major takeaways from this video are applicable to all zones - for example, spinach is light sensitive regardless of the temperature; spinach will bolt faster if planted densely etc. . these fineses are what will definitely improve everyone's understanding of the plant's optimal growing requirements and help you have a better harvest. It's not that big of a deal to adjust planting calendars for your specific zones - Jenna's practical knowledge and in depth no bs approach to fundamentals are actually very rare on YT. I'm from Serbia, my area falls somewhere between zones 6 and 7, but my elevation, nearby river and specific winds create a microclimate that is quite challenging for vegetable production. I would not be able to have a lush, year around vegetable garden without in depth knowledge of soil chemistry, microbiology and plant physiology. Thank you again for doing an amazing job here, Jenna. I consider you my neighbor from other side of the globe 🌎
You are, hands down, the BEST garden youtuber on here, imho! You are so thorough, so detailed in every single aspect of whatever veg/flower you are speaking on. You are also NOT condescending, arrogant and do not talk down to us like we are peons. I am so happy the algo's sent your vids to me! I also love the fact that you show us what the bad and good insects look like, the damage that they do and how to curtail said pest and damage. Although, I am 1 million % jelly of your garden space. So many people just afraid of failure they don't succeed. 💯 best advice is "Growfully with Jenna " to help any gardening questions. I've built my wife a Asian hoe like Jenna but a left hand as my wife is lefthand and loves to garden also.
I cover my tiny seed veggies with a heavy felt cloth it was very successful last spring and for my fall planting out did that board trick. As you advised me last year with success, I planted my radishes carrots and beets this morning. Sadly, my wife doesn't like spinach as I like it and good for us. Thanks for the heads up. Thank you for doing this video. I am in SC zone 8B. I have wanted to go and setup some cold crops. Lettuce/Spinach and kale just to get a head start and then ill start more seeds inside in the next few weeks. I just have that itch to start going already. Your videos are wonderful. So glad i came across them :) Soon I believe we are going to be relocating to KY ; New learning curve, but we are going to have over 30 acres of land so many opportunities !
I think many times I watch your videos just because I love gardening and you are such a great presenter. I admit I do listen to see if there is anything I can add but that isn't very often. Pest pressure can be lessened with an abundance of natural predators. As we talked about earlier, that means the best thing we can do is have an abundance of native plants in or around our gardens. Oh and I do have one thing to add about bolting... Swiss Chard. ;-)
I have definitely struggled. I sowed some directly in a garden bed last fall and they came up during a warm spell and are growing well now. They went through some pretty cold temps. Others that I direct sowed this year haven’t shown themselves yet. I do have some in small pots that I’m going to plant out this week. I love spinach and would be so happy if I could just grow some!
Instead of watering with water I used ice from my ice maker between the rows and hide them behind my tomatoes and that has helped keep them from bolting early on me
You know what. I once told someone you never, ever, ever water anything with ice cubes... Spinach may be one of those plants.. I have some crow pie to eat. 😂

I always trouble growing spinach the second time. I try so many ways. Middle of August and September. Never no luck! I would like to try the winter spinach. The last two seasons I started to plant spinach in the middle of March, it works well

Not a true spinach but close and used the same way. Supposedly heat tolerant. Grows like a vine so needs trellis . Would be a nice summer option. Seeds are from MIgardner . Thanks again😁

I just resowed my spinach for the third time. The first one I accidentally dropped the tray. The next one nothing came up seeds rotted. Now I sowed with brand new seeds. Hardest part is getting seeds germinated. Third time is a charm.
I was just waiting for some rain (today) to put some spinach seedlings out. Grew some hydroponically inside this winter, the lettuce did better, pH related. Since my cat has been gone the bunnies feasted on my spinach and lettuce last year, will not give them the same opportunity this year, lol. Stay Well!!!

Wow, There is a lot to know about planting Spinach. I just planted some seeds 3 days ago. I planted some last year but it was too close to summer in June (Massachusetts) and they didn't grow.
I have to grow on the west or north side, my spinach(planted 1-12-24) all bolted as soon as they got two sets of leaves. Longstanding my butt!! 😂 Where I had it was a weird micro-climate, I guess.

I use 40%, which seems to do the trick here.
In Virginia zone 7b l direct seed in October then overwinter. Spring plants always bolt.
