TRANSCRIPT (for the Film Essay):
While many people don’t have a favorite film and understandably so because it’s a hard thing to quantify - this film, is without a doubt my favorite. I know that because the first time I watched it, I had that sort of feeling when you’re in an op shop and you try something on and in your gut you just know you’re going to wear it a bizzillion-gillion times, without having to um-and-ah about the whole thing for ten minutes before deciding. I’m not, and would never claim it to be the best film ever made, but it’s my favorite and one small contributing reason to this is the high prominence of food in the film. Lucky for me I get to shove my favorite film in your face and ears because of this, as there is a fabulous selection of food that I got stuck into and veganized the booties off them with epic results.
But before I share those recipes with you, back to this film and exactly why it’s worthy of the claim of being ‘my favorite film’.
This Beautiful Fantastic is a small cast, small budget independent, British film set in London, which follows reclusive writer and librarian Bella Brown as she has to face the task of repairing her long-neglected garden at the back of her flat, despite her intense fear of nature and OCD tendencies. She develops a friendship of sorts with her grumpy plant-expert of a neighbor over the course of the film and also with her neighbors’ booted out cleaner & cook Vernon who works for her after his firing next door. I realize it sounds a little bizarre or bland - but, I assure you (at least in my opinion) the cast really do make it work.
The gentle comedy is not really about gardening despite that introduction, but more so about mental health, anxiety, grief, romantic and familiar love, passions and growing enough confidence in yourself to get on and do what you wish to be doing. What I love about this film is how the character of Bella represents an utterly creative person who is locked in and prevented from flowering because of anxieties and repetitive behaviors that pervade her life. The film meditates of the brain being both the source of creative drive and inhibitor of it. This Beautiful Fantastic doesn’t entertain the idea that a creative has to mentally suffer in order to create good work, but rather they will only flourish when they are freed from intrusive thoughts and behaviors.
At the start of the film, Bella’s obsessive world she has created for herself is set to a routine of eating, dressing and doing the exact same things each and everyday at the same set times. Listening to Gallic radio with her segregated dinner in front of her as the clock tick’s over to 6:30. Her seven different toothbrushes, one for everyday of the week stand in front of her bathroom mirror like prison bars to the life she could be leading.
But instead of entertaining the idea that a traumatic facing of one’s fears must take place in order for one’s psyche to rebalance itself again, the film shows that through following the positive provided by friendship and support (even from the bizarre-est of places) and creative passions - one can be led out of the darkness through love. Alright that was corny and the film is a quirky hufflepuff type of film for sure - the but whole inconsequential gentle nature of the narrative in the film is what makes it one that I’ll happily watch over and over.
The relationship in the the film between Bella and Vernon in the film is one of the loveliest, purest on screen representations of familiar love, rather than romantic love. Vernon, a young Irish widowed father of two girls, who works as a cleaner and cook to make ends meet, makes this film worth watching just on his own. The emotional sensitivity, humor, refreshing example of masculinity and ferocious yet subtle generous nature of this character is heaven and while the film doesn’t really go into it, this character copes with his grief through taking a shitty job as a way to be surrounded by people all the time and distract himself through caring for them.
As I said the film is not overtly about gardening, and nor is it about mental health but the subtlety and layers to this “modern day fairytale”, as it has been called are what make it so wonderful.
The food in this film only works as expressions of love and comfort so with that you’re definitely in for three warm-hug-esque recipes. Thank you for letting me ramble on about my hands down favorite film honeybunches, but let’s jump into these recipes in This Beautiful Fantastic. But Vegan.
This was lovely. I watched This Beautiful Fantastic just a couple nights ago. You are entirely correct in the deep message of the film. And in the second watching I began to notice the food. Your 3 demonstrations of making the 3 dishes simply topped off my Easter weekend. Thank you. & God bless.
Fiver years late to the party. But yes, this film is a little gem. Lovely story, beautifully told - and what a cast :)
Its so realistic...hardly anything fake about the host and her opinions...extremely comfortable as she is herself.....:-)

I must see this film now!!! :D I love stories like this, and as someone with OCD (though seemingly a different type than the protagonist) and anxiety as well, I think this would be potentially even cathartic to see, aha.
It's such a lovely film
I love your description, and I wish I could cook like you... but I am not even sure I can get the ingredients in the South of Mexico :(, and even if I could, it might be pricey ... but I love your work! and I was thinking... Absolutely love this movie. I can't quite find another one like it. However, Romantics Anonymous and Amelie have a somewhat similar feel. I like sad, romantic, nostalgic, vintage, Earl grey, rain, old books, jazz.. This movie feels like that. Awesome video :)
Ah Earl Grey, what a film description! That's so perfect for it

agh you do ?!!! i thought i was alone hehe :))
Ahh thank you so much for putting this film on my radar! It looks and sounds like exactly my kind of film! And as a creative who deals with a lot of anxiety and depression I can't stand the whole tortured artist stereotype, so I really appreciate that this film seems to challenge that trope. I can't wait to check it out when I have time! And of course your recipes look absolutely delicious as always too, especially the quiche!
agh i'm so glad this film sounded right up your street
Missed this video just like I missed this movie! But I remember watching the trailer and being definitively interested- really like the colours and the cast... then cookies for the win always arghh
