The trailers for this looked really generic and made me less excited, glad to hear they're not accurate to what the movie actually is. Seeing it tomorrow, can't wait! Also, since Gravity, the we seem to have gotten a quality big-budget sci-fi/space movie starring an A-list actor every fall. Definitely one of my favorite trends of the 2010s.
Fox gambled on it. But Disney now owns Fox, I can promise you, you'll never see a movie like this or Widows come out of Fox ever again :( They shot with little green screen, used practical effects, did sky replacement and shot on land for the planet scenes and inside a studio. Seeing it again in IMAX this weekend.
Just came out of Ad Astra in IMAX! Wow, blown away. What a journey. Didn't want it to end. Great experience. Go see it in IMAX for full effect. A thoroughly believable portrayal (except Roy's CGI beard). I came out of the cinema playing the 'To The Stars' soundtrack on repeat all the way home.
Seeing a number of reviews calling it boring and I honestly believe that the majority of people went expecting something totally different from a character study. I think it will be very important to get the word out to people amped to see the film to understand that is deeply entrenched in slow character development which involves space. I'm seeing it tomorrow and I really look forward to it because I can appreciate all types of films set in space.
@Star Fox - Well, I enjoyed it and look forward to seeing it again. It's not to everyone's liking and the trailers weren't the right way to go. They should been straight forward about what it is and not release clips of the moon buggy fight or the monkey. None of those scenes should have been released because it sets an expectation that the film cannot meet.
This was the first film experience in five years that left me thinking about my own life more and more. It asks the question "What is enough for one man?" and that's what I've been struggling to come to terms with, but Ad Astra gave me the answer I was looking for. One of 2019's best films.
Nice review, Bailey! The visuals of this one were great, but I think my favorite aspect was the character study approach to dealing with Pitt's character. I wasn't expecting something quite so introspective.
I agree that the film was misrepresented. I was not a can of this film. I thought that it was boring in its storytelling. It is much more of a contemplative film , than a space adventure. I thought that its visual design was fantastic! And it was that, that really pulled him through the film. It certainly, was visaully immersive but I was not a can of how the narrative was executed. Great review!
I watched this review when it popped up in my notices even though I hadn't yet watched the movie. I wasn't sure I even wanted to watch the movie, the trailer felt very underwhelming to me. But I always love your reviews (even when I don't agree with you), you're always so passionate and eloquent. So you convinced me to give this movie a chance. Not only that, but my expectations were quite high all of a sudden, so I was worried that I'd be disappointed. I watched it today, and was immediately hypnotized. Just watching the title appear on the screen while listening to Max Richter's score had me in tears already. I loved the slow meditative pace of the story, loved how the harsh realities of space travel combined with all those majestic images of the solar system and the incomprehensible vastness of the universe filled me with a sense of awe and transcendence and loneliness and isolation, and each of these feelings was beautiful and terrifying all at once. When the movie ended I couldn't move, I just stayed in my seat watching the credits roll and listening to the score and feeling absolutely transported. I hope I can go watch it again.
At the end of the movie I felt as contained yet full of feelings for what I just witnessed and I don't know what to do about other than I wish I had a recovery room like the one in the movie
Wow. I enjoyed the visuals & thought the acting was not at all phoned in, but I struggled to make it thru. I thought it was a slog. I literally almost fell asleep a few times & the guy behind me was snoring. A couple people left before he left Mars. I'm glad I saw it, but I have no desire to rewatch it
After I saw this film I wasn't exactly sure how to feel about it. I didn't know too much about it going in, apart from that it had similarities to Heart of Darkness. However, the tone was even more solitary than I expected and it's definitely a lonely film, but not on accident. That being said, watching you talk about how much you love it is definitely helping clarify things a little bit for me. I think what I really liked about it was getting to explore this character that feels somehow both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. And like you said, the visuals are wonderful. For me, the only things that detracted from the film just a little bit were that some of the world-building aspects felt a little underdeveloped, and that a few of the lines that Brad Pitt had to narrate felt just a tad cheesy.
Preach it brother. I was engaged right from the start, and understood the journey from beginning to the end. In short, this movie is about a son struggling with abandonment issues, while struggling with duty that defined his identity.
Excellent movie review because you tapped into so many key points. The fabric of this movie becomes so uniquely tangible to the viewer it's like you said the immersion takes you into a week long journey.
See, I thought it was a waste of my time. I went in hoping for Contact but suspecting it was more like Arrival, and I was right. It is 2019 I suppose. Great future-world building but essentially petered out in its attempt to be subdued. I don’t need to watch a film about a self-centred father and son who kill people so they can have peace of mind at the end. thank u, next 🙅♀️
Yeah, the message of the movie is so "strange" at least. Like "science do bad shit, space is no land for you and, also, people are crazy". It's like an attempt to emulate the nihilistic vision of the world Kubrick showcased in his movies, but the wallmart version of it. Or a cinematography wise boring version of 2001 : space odyssey, which is amazing in itself.
@@BreakingBanter It might be, but as no character is developped in the movie (Pitt mothers got no lines, Liv Tyler just 2, the "friend" of his father not that much, nearly everybody else dies) how could you "want" as a viewer for Pitt to connect with them ? Nobody is shown redemption, how is humanity rewarded nor deserving in the movie ? I mean, that this message isn't that clear.
It was phenomenal! In my mind at least, this is what space travel would look like. It's what deep space astronauts would struggle with. This is just perfect sci-fi storyline, cinematography, and score all in the same film.
theres no one that reviews movies that helps me get the most out of a movie more than you man even when ive seen it i know to come back here to check out how you viewed it to maybe help me get more out of it the next time i see it and appreciate the art more
Bailey, I'm a huge James Gray fan, and beyond just The Immigrant and The Lost City of Z make sure you check out We Own The Night as well. He's such a spectacular filmmaker.
It was absolutely awful. I walked out before the end. BTW, anyone who says this was a really realistic space movie doesn't know what they are talking about; it was laughably unrealistic. They obviously tried to make Apocalypse Now in space with Brad Pitt as Marlow, and Tommy Lee as Colonel Kurtz. For example, Pitt's thoughts narrate many scenes, just like Martin Sheen's role in Apocalypse Now. But it was so silly in some points that I thought maybe they intended it to be a dark comedy. For example, there is one scene (SPOILER) where Pitt is in a small space capsule with three other astronauts (not much larger than an Apollo capsule ) but there is a freaking flight attendant offering him a pillow and blanket. I laughed out loud. And remember the scene in Apocalypse Now where they stopped on the river to inspect a little fishing boat and ended up shooting everyone? Well in Ad Astra they stop on their way to Mars (no seriously, they MADE A STOP ON THEIR WAY TO MARS like they had all the fuel in the universe) and it also went bad. Pitt even copies some of Martin Sheen's body language from the river scene. I was surprised he didn't copy Sheen's line "I told you not to stop" after it all went bad. And many, many, many of the plot elements made no sense at all, like why did he have to go all the way to Mars just to send a radio message? Don't they have radios on Earth?
This was an absolute masterpiece. I love movies and rarely watch a movie twice in the box office but I'm going back to see it in IMAX and Dolby Cinema. If have to say it's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.
Just came back from watching this movie and loved it sooo much!! Favorite of the year so far (haven’t seen Midsommar, Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood yet)
Thank you for this review! Convince me to see it despite all the OTHER reviews saying that it's slow and boring. Really glad I didn't listen to them and listened to you instead.
Watched this yesterday. Was only six people in the cinema for some reason. . I really enjoyed the film. Brad Pitt is excellent and the space scenes especially on the moon are fantastic 😁😀
Awesome review! Im seeing this tomorrow night. I hope i love it like you did... there's so many mixed reviews.. I love deep meaning outer space films..
Have you seen The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford? If so what do you think? I think Brad Pitt as Jesse James rivals his performance in Ad Astra as his best but for completely different reasons.
I saw this movie yesterday and I feel like I had almost the same exact reaction as you. It was just so incredible, and gave such a sense of clarity and content and just ugh it was so good
So glad this movie did not take the Marvel Comic view of the Universe, where EVERYTHING is DYSTOPIAN and APOCALYPTIC, nor did it view the Future as UTOPIAN . . . . Not a 2001 or ALIEN, but somewhere in between . . . . because the Universe is so broad . . . .

I’d give it a 7/10 it was missing a lot of answers to a 1000 questions asked throughout the film, a very slow and dull dialogue, pointless scenes, but brad Pitt and tommy lee jones just made this movie.
let me tell you people were walking out and the people behind me where saying this movie was slow and it was a waste of time and I kept wanting to leave but i was with a friend who thought it was ok and he paid so I stayed but boy the story and the ending sucked &*&^*sss
I'll repost here my own com on the thread as nobody seems tohave bothered to read it, in order to try launching a debate. - I got the point the movie is trying to make but it's a huuuuuge miss on every aspect. Apart from the 10 first minutes everything else is so flat. The cinematography is random, after seeing Gravity and Interstellar this movie is just ok-ish cgi. There is absolutly no character arc wathsoever. No repercusions, no pay-off. At the end I was laughing, as a lot of people in the theater, when the Space Cowboy do what we knew he would for the past 20 minutes.. SPOILERS In details, my main issue with the movie is that, - It story shouldn't even start, Pitt character have like zero reasons to be sent in his journey (he just has to make a phone call, but needs to be brought near his interlocutor to make so because the movie asked it..). - Every problem arrive because the scenario needs it, like 10 persons needs to die during his journey, which is more or less a big ferry travel. - The travel from the Earth to the Moon has for only purpose to showcase the virgin atlantic space shuttles, no justification scenario wise, he should have traveled in an army shuttle. - Same thing for the moon part, once again, it only purpose is to showcase a cool (and it is) space battle. Nothing logic about their way of travelling. - Science and exploration are described as evil and only bring death (from space death monkeys to dooms day space station device). - Having dreams will probably make you a mass murderer. - Every mistakes your ancestors made are your own. - Government manipulate and use you, because reasons, even though they're just trying to save humanity. - The response this movie tries to bring to the question of life is that we are alone in the universe and God is the only response. - Also, our hero kills 3 innocent pilots, steals a space shuttle and detonate a nuclear warhead, but, will live happily ever after... - (Bonus) The way the co-pilot of the shuttle is portayed is just insulting toward any professional in any line of work. The movie tries so much and fail so hard.. This only is my perception, but seriously, this is the worst movie I saw in a theater for a long time. This was the first time in my life I wondered if I should leave the theater before the end of the movie. (English isn't my native language so.. sorry for the typos)
Breaking Banter Oh cool. Was hoping to seek advice from you with what you do. I admire your work man. I’m watching Ad Astra tomorrow night on IMAX! Thanks for the review, looking forward to seeing the film! Keep up the great work!!
Ad Astra is indeed a masterpiece and the best film of 2019. It's almost as good as Gravity and even better than Interstellar. What we need is many more space movies.
The movie 2001 had more exciting dialog, the storyline was one dimensional, and predictable. The movie dragged along with long sequences of nothing while skipping over key details with barely a mention. And what the heck was the 15-minute plot detour on the disabled space station with an enraged ape. This had no plot purpose but to needlessly kill a minor character and had nothing to do with the rest of the movie. The special effects were admittedly good but a movie can not be carried on effects alone. And any so-called sci-fi elements were ripped off of a number of other films with very little imaginative thought. Overall the film was mostly boring with nothing new to offer fans. And Yes the trailers were massively misleading, I went thinking I was going to see an action-packed sci-fi movie, not 2 hours of watching a has-been actor just phoning it in. He showed no emotion throughout the film, no connection to the character he is portraying, just staring is not acting. If it was then my Dog would be an Oscar winner. You can save your time and money and just watch the movie trailer and dream of the movie this could have been.
That's not how my reviews work I guess. They're not sales pitches or advertisements, it's just me talking about how I feel. I don't really even try to say that I think anyone else will feel the same as me about any movie, because that's usually never the case.

Jumping up and down about the very mature issues that this film is trying to take on about the death of a parent and mid life crisis There’s no way this child can even grasp what it means on some levels and he’s literally screeching.
If you had died after seeing Ad Astra, you would have died content because of having seen Ad Astra? Do you maybe want to redo this review in a few weeks once the ludicrousness has worn off?
@@BreakingBanter everybody should and has to be entitled to there opinion, but nevertheless it's so strange to see someone loving so much something you see as so bad based on your criteria of artistic evaluation.

SPOILERS
In details, my main issue with the movie is that,
- It story shouldn't even start, Pitt character have like zero reasons to be sent in his journey (he just has to make a phone call, but needs to be brought near his interlocutor to make so because the movie asked it..).

I love you so much. Your passion for good movies.
So you liked it?
I'm waiting for your review of the movie Uncut Gems
Thanks for the beathyful review I go o see the movie this saturday so excited thanks man
So it's definitely not a horror movie based in space, right?
Sounds like some Oscar worthy production design going on there. Definitely will be seeing this.
Brother are you based in Melbourne?
Perth
Wow you clearly have attention deficit in films.
Explain this... F = GM m / r2 .....millennials!!!!
I think you might have ruined it for us. How can this movie possibly live up to all that hype from you?
That's not how my reviews work I guess.
They're not sales pitches or advertisements, it's just me talking about how I feel. I don't really even try to say that I think anyone else will feel the same as me about any movie, because that's usually never the case.
Just saw it, it was outstanding
It’s way overrated! Dull and boring

Jumping up and down about the very mature issues that this film is trying to take on about the death of a parent and mid life crisis
There’s no way this child can even grasp what it means on some levels and he’s literally screeching.
If you had died after seeing Ad Astra, you would have died content because of having seen Ad Astra? Do you maybe want to redo this review in a few weeks once the ludicrousness has worn off?
Nah, I'm good thanks. A movie can mean that much to someone 👍
@@BreakingBanter everybody should and has to be entitled to there opinion, but nevertheless it's so strange to see someone loving so much something you see as so bad based on your criteria of artistic evaluation.
@@GalaadJoachim Your opinion doesn't make it fact nor is your point of view the only correct one. Stop hating on people that love something or stop making people feel bad because they love something and you didn't. That's weird. Your the problem not the movie. You got issues.
@@maforo85 Yeah, of course. The only thing we can do is try to analyse movies based on criteria we can agree on, like storytelling, character writting, music, cinematography (etc..). This movie as for himself to make us speak and debate, in this aspect, it's great.
