None of this works in my version of Substance (2.6.2). Once I open the paint layer, add mask and then add paint, there is no “stencil” in properties. There’s nothing, just fill mode and color.
Here's another simple yet extremely powerful tool in Substance, hope this clears up any questions you had for projection and stencils :)

I saw someone do this using animal images to texture animal models. Looked so weird at the time cause I had no idea what he was doing.
