The voice acting decision, the arc that Frank goes through being unique against other scifi amputees, the fact that injuries have WEIGHT to the show?? This video is a perfect advertisement to this show 👀👀
You know, considering how often Cinema and television have played the old, "feeble person with cane, faced with danger, reveals a hidden weapon" thing. Having the reveal of the crutches themselves being the "Oh, SNAP! moment. That's pretty great.
Huh. I wonder what y'all feel about the whole "weak disabled person turns out to be powerful bad/good guy" trope; I bet that it won't be regarded as fantastic or anything, but I'd like to see some discussion on that.
@@FurKid_the_Gg_roo_99 Huh. I guess it would depend on whether they treat their weaker form as a disguise, in which case it would be equivalent to blackface, or whether they consider it their natural form, which they choose to return to rather than being a God all the time.
@@THATGuy5654Yeah, there are 2 (technically 3) examples that I know do that do the disguise thing - hence why I was curious. There's the shitty *Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief* movie with Grover & Chiron's reveals about them using magic & mobility aids to hide their fantasy equine legs; if you didn't see the film (or the book Ig, but I can't remember shit from it & I viewed the film more than it unfortunately), Grover is a satyr who hides his goat legs by being a crutch user & Chiron is a centaur who is a wheelchair user to hide the horse half of his body. I don't think they're too bad since they're just fantastical beings trying to blend in, but the movie is bad & has flaws with how it portrayed the dyslexia & ADHD, especially when it was only kinda acknowledged/portrayed with Percy & not Annabeth when in the books, if I'm remembering it right, they were shared demigod traits, but that's something else entirely. Then, there's what I'm pretty sure is a more obscure film, *The Librarian and the Curse of the Judas Chalice.* (*Spoilers for the film in case you wanna see it or something, Ig*) To put it more basically/without "legit" story context to not get too all over the place, there's this nice disabled professor guy who turned out to be Vlad Dracul/Dracula himself who just had to regain his power after getting weakened; as I'm typing this, I realize that this may not actually count because the guy was actually disabled, however, he was the only prominent disabled character and he just turned out to be a literally bloodthirsty maniac. I'll let you guys handle that if you want check out the film and especially its 2 predecessor films because I bet the other 2 are also good - but aside from the 3rd one/that one I can only kinda remember the 1st one & have no memory of the 2nd.
I personally got the impression that those were just hospital issued crutches he got in case his leg hurt or he needed off time from it. I do seriously hope he gets some proper ones that feel his next season
God its so fucking real, one of my online friends got a pair of crutches with shock absorption and I am so fucking jealous of them, if I try to move fast on mine the entire impact goes to my shoulders ripppppp
How dare you!!! You don't realize what you wrote! Be ashamed of yourself! Nobody couldn't even thiks ,things like that!!! That's why I don't like this movie too! It's actally really bad!
For explaining the crutch-like weapons: if Max had access to Frank's skillset on his dossier, the way he uses crutches would probably have been listed as a martial arts training of some kind, probably similar to tonfas, because that's DEFINITELY a martial skill he's trained, the way the battle choreography works out. It wouldn't be too hard to modify an extensible tonfa into a permanently extended version. (This in turn implies that either he invented a new way to fight for himself, or that in their world, there's an entire martial arts discipline that incorporates crutches, kind of like La Canne incorporated canes and walking sticks into a martial art, too)
I actually used my crutches like tonfas, I even considered modding them to be better at this extra job. I had a bit of experience with tonfas before and I would even consider crutches more dangerous. I am usually able to walk without them but I am way faster and more agile with them so if I am going into not 100% safe environment I am taking my aids. Or of if I am working as mass event safety person. Nobody expects crutches self defence and it is VERY effective.
Also, open cuffs are actually more practical if you want to use them as improvised tonfas - this is reason I am sticking with them. I am even considering opening them a bit more. There actually is a reason to choose them. I added Velcro band to hold them around my forearm. Basically tonfa -> rotating stick with handle. wouldn’t be possible with closed ring around hand. Mostly half rotations are possible with crutches but this is more than enough in real fight - length is giving you a lot of advantage. And I have to watch this show.
I am surprised that you didn't mention that moment in a fight when Frank used his robo's weapons like crutches, it really shows how he incorporates his disability in his fighting style even while piloting
YES! I love Frank, he's my favorite character in Mech Cadets, and I love seeing this show get recognition since no one really talks about it. That's so cool that Frank's VA has the same disability, it just adds a bit of realism in the fact that he'll be able to really understand and get in the head of his character in a different way than an able-bodied voice actor would. Thanks for the video!
This is such a fascinating show! I'm going to check it out for sure! 😀 One thing I'd like to see in more stories are variations on blindness. Too often, blind characters are fully blind, or it's some sort of bizarre metaphor about 'not seeing' something important, or whatever. If someone asked me, 'would you want full sight with both eyes?', I'd say, 'absolutely not.' Trying to imagine what that would be like, it's like trying to imagine smelling with your knee, or hearing with your elbow. Ridiculous.
Excellent suggestion! One of my fandom friends describes themselves as "A blind painter of extinct media," since they can see some things, especially a wide variety of colors my average eyes don't pick up on, and they paint gorgeous watercolor portraits and landscapes. 🥰
If you're comfortable with watching it, you should do a disability review on Blue Eye Samurai. The show has a main character, Ringo, who was born without hands, but he's very well adapted to it, and he makes little custom tools to help with day to day tasks. His disability also isn't really in your face besides how obvious it is to see visually unless it's being brought up for story reasons like how Ringo relates to the protagonist's biracial heritage since both his disability and her heritage makes others immediately discriminate against them.
I have got to say, when I was using crutches a while back, it took a while to adjust to caring things around. I can only imagine how having closed cuffs crutches helps with that. thanks for another informative video!
I don’t know why but watching this the thought of how I’ve read some fanfictions that portray disability better than actual professionally developed media portrays disability and I hate that. Like if fanfiction can portray disability better than actual studios for media then I feel like there’s an issue and there is.
I’d love to see you do a video on „a silent voice” the anime as I’m deaf and Japanese and I’d love to watch it but I’m obviously a bit cautious of how the representation is handled
In this case I agree with all of you Mr. Mainly about crutches. The walking stick(with a few legs) or walkers are much more comftable to use. And simetimes (speaking about walker mainly) help much with carrying some heavy things during walking. Like the dishes for example. These series seems to be so awesome! Even I don't know it until watched this video. Thanks for sharing it. Can you please tell me Mr. where it can be avalible to watch for free? Is it on Netflix maybe? I really want to watch it! I it something what I looking for so long(The story with dsabled charatcers when they are treat perfecly normal same with undisabled characters,And not focusing to much about their disability). Hurray!!! You make me so happy!!!.😆

Have you considered doing video on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom and disability? The ending was absolutely beautiful EXCEPT for that part, and I can't enjoy it fully; bc what they did with restoring Link's old arm just makes me feel so *icky*, & even if it didn't, it's unsatisfying imo.
This is completely unrelated to the video, but I recognized your right ring! (Lovely to see!) I noticed that the two on your left hand are slightly different colors. If you're comfortable with sharing, could I ask what they mean?
i honestly hope he did get input on the charecter, it seems to me like he did with Frank prefering to not always wear a prosthetic and with the forearm crutches, it makes sense to me since he preffers to not have it and underarm crutches are very uncomfortable.
