Please, one last question to understand better: with a mic. so small I believe you have to be close enough to it to get a good presence and a robust sound. Don't you think that shooting distant or very distant people outdoors (countryside) with the mic. built-in camera do a similar job? Do you believe that the mini mic. is it necessary to get better quality? Thanks again.

I know that when it comes to mic preference the choice is subjective, but I was really hoping that mic "B" would have been the Deity, specially since I already have on one the way in the mail. I really think in this test Rode did a better job in isolating your voice from the construction taking place to your side, and it had a nice base sound. That said, I'm sure I will be able to match it in post, something I really rather not do. However, I have to say that the Deity at this point is unmatched with the ability to connect a 2nd sound device like a lavalier mic and the price point.

both will need quite a bit of EQ but the extension on B towards the bass side might be easier to work with. A sounds nasaly and I think I hear a 1k peak in there. B sounds like your nose is stopped up so less response past around 3k and maybe a slight 1k peak there as well. I think the bass extension on B would be easier to work with because you can add a bit of air in post and have it sound the most natural on a device like a smart phone.

To me the Rhode sounded better and had more base. It was also kind of funny when you mentioned that if you had the mics close up, you got the best sound, and warned that in the next shot there is some rattling - while in that announcement itself you already had noises. I am not 100% if these are popping noises or you had very slight bumps into them.
I am currently having one of these massive Blue Yeti Mics and some Rhode Wireless go. But what annoys me most, is that:
    1. They are both highly susceptible to movement. If I turn my head slightly during a recording, this will have a big impact on how it sounds. Angle and distance from mouth to video is cruicial. Also the Rhode Go doesn't sound that great without an additional mic, and these for some reasons always come with super long cables, which was the reason I bought the wireless mic in the first place (instad of a lavallier).
So I am wondering if these Microphones would actually do better in that regard, if you position them like 70cm away. I guess it will not make that much of a difference anymore in regards of whether you are 10 cm closer or turn 10 degrees to one direction?

Great work, I thought they'd be reversed due to the "bass" on B and the clearer sounding A.
Interested to know how far away they can be to boom in, the first minute sounds great but when you move them closer, the audio does sound more complete (full?). For "talking head" shots a tiny "mini" mic does look a bit funny when it's in shot.
Is there much difference from this vs something like a rode NTG (which is a good $200 more) or a cheaper Comica CVM VM20, because if they have to be in shot, these could look a little better IMO.

    • @markwiemels

Good pick up on the sound variation! At the start of the video, I had positioned the Mic, but then was leaning into the shot and the mic was pointing more towards the top of my head, rather than the optimum position pointing to mouth/chest. I adjusted it and that's when the audio improved. I'm about to do a more detailed video on booming and mic placement. The sound is overwhelmingly about personal preference. So a $200 mic is only better if you prefer the sound signature, also check out Deities premium mics. The Deity D3, and D3 Pro, they look like very good value, but I have not had a chance to test them yet.

Yes, a video on mic placement will be really useful especially working from home setups, something like this can clearly x10 your audio yet it seems with audio the law of diminishing returns applies heavily and things can get very expensive.
Looking forward for my D4 Deity, I think (hope) it'll be good enough for “everything” just interested to see whether I can get away with using just this mic, voice overs (up close but not in shot) and then boomed in for talking head.

I didn’t like “A”. It sounded thinner and more nasal like. “B” had a bit more presence, and a nicer overall tone.

To me there was no deference in Audio quality and that will make the Diety V-D4 Mini the best bang for the buck with it's price and extra cable. A no brainer IMHO

My dachshund barks when it hears your voice in my speakers. I literally have to use my headphones on low volume, otherwise my dog will keep on barking. lol. Nice video though. Thank you.

I was surprised that the Deity was A. It sounds so much better than the Rode microphone.

throughout the video the mic he uses just sounds a little different..A is more delicate and B a little bass.. in my opinion both mics are good..some people prefer to listen to instrumental music and some people like to listen to jazz music, maybe rnb and maybe rock..so there is no final answer..if you still have many questions about which mic is good, you better buy a more expensive and higher spec mic.. "what you pay for is what you get" but not for fakes ..

I'm 2:11 in and prefer mic B. Seems to have more cardioid isolation and response in the bass frequency while still retaining clarity in the higher > 4K frequencies

Your audio tests were far to short for a serious comparison. That is one thing you learn with experience. My preference was for the clarity of microphone A as opposed to the more bass in microphone B.

I disagree. I thought that the test lengths were fine, and that Mark managed to pack in a pretty thorough range of different test conditions. And I don't need a 60 min test to choose between two $50-ish mics. I found myself leaning towards B (Rode) most of the time; A (Deity) sounded a bit thinner and a touch hollow sometimes. But it still cleaned up nicely. I'd happily use either.

Current price on Amazon USA is D4 = $49, VideoMicro = $52, I guess it changes all the time. Even at the same price you get the extra port and the extra cord with the Deity.
