  • A trial funded in part by NIH is evaluating an investigational device called the BrainGate neural interface system. This is a type of brain-computer interface (BCI) intended to put robotics and other assistive technology under the brain's control. By imagining the movement of their own arms, two paralyzed individuals were able to use the BrainGate to make complex reach-and-grasp movements with robotic arms. Credit: The BrainGate Collaboration.

    The best part of this video is to see her smile over something so simple for most of us.
    There has been amazing advancement in this type of stuff since i was a kid, another 25 years i could see this being a practical option for prosthetic

    Wow. I watched this at 6.30 am on my way to fall some trees. This video reduced a 270 lb 6 foot 1 inch 39 year old logger to misty eyed wonder. I haven't had a tear jerker since the end of ET. Great stuff.

    Science and Technology has to be the greatest achievement of Man-Kind. If only we have funded scientific Technology a little more than Military tech, I think we would have lived in a happier world. I wish I had the mental focus to study up on Robotics. It's really amazing what we can do with it.

    The hard part about this is the noise in your brain. Its really hard to separate what impulses are sending commands to whatever part of the body. While you're thinking about moving your arm there also many other things going on at the same time. They have to single out that one action, its like a needle in a haystack. They use repetition, basically you thinking about the same movement over and over for long periods of time. It helps them figure out which set of signals go to that specific command. I'm sure the technology has come a long way since this video and I hope one day people can get new arms and legs, hell maybe even eyes

      I did, absolutely, yeah. Wow my mind is blown by how much your brain can output within only that amount of area (of that implant) and with only 100 electrodes, and I haven't had the concept of how deep science has gone in decoding the brain impulses, being able to control a cursor and an arm is really incredible! Like this is certainly not a miracle at all, like we all know this is gonna happen, but I didn't know we're already that far.

    I thought about writing a novel about a man who's brain was moved to a robot after he died and was able to continue living, and the way that I thought about how it would work is EXACTLY how the person was controlling the robot in this video, and I was totally guessing, that is awesome!

    Actually, that is the next phase of this development...a signal sent back to the brain so the person can "feel." For amputees with robotic arms that have intact nerves, they do have these reverse signals back to the brain allowing them to feel. Google the "60 Minutes" story about these robotic arms.

      They might be too damaged. The people in the video suffered from stroke, which damages the brain in a completely different way than ALS.

    • @Sposchy
      @Sposchy 7 лет назад +1

      It's absolutely possible. Krishna Shenoy recently published a paper showing ALS patients moving a cursor in two-dimensions with amazing fluidity. They were able to type about 20 characters per minute using an on-screen keyboard (compare to ~200 characters per minute for an average able-bodied person with a keyboard).

  • @monashnsri5
    @monashnsri5 11 лет назад +1

    Nope, but it makes sense that to control a external arm or limb, you need to be able to 'feel' that limb, as if it were part of your body and nervous system. In fact, without feedback from our nerves, its hard for us to have real control over our own bodies. Thoughts alone are simply not enough. Scientists really need to focus on this area of development, cos telekinesis is not the way we control our real bodies :)

    I was forced to take an implant at 316 east chestnut st Louisville ky in July of 2012 at the ccc jail. I've been a test subject for the last 5 years. I have an x ray showing the chip in Louisville. I moved out of ky to avoid being set up by the Louisville Metro Police Department. If your from Louisville you know what I'm talking about....fake cia training center. I know the name of the tech that updated the system in the basement(braingate system) help me put a stop to this inhumane testing and torture. I have the chip, I have an x ray. I eyewitnesseed the braingate system being used. My family and friends as well as councilors believe me. I have called the police departments. (LMPD and Sheriff) as well as the ombudsman. They all know what I'm talking about, but it's out of their jurisdiction. It's corrections jurisdiction.They never answer the phone. Ever.
