- Hi Animators
I wanted to share with you how did i started this journey, from a high school student, to my first 2d animation school, Animation Mentor, to tv series, feature film, vfx and Video Games
it was definitely not easy, and i made a lot of mistake that cost me a lot of time and money and that what this first video is about...Mistakes!
so hopefully you won`t do the same.
if you have any comments, drop it in the comment
P.S. the character that i use for my Thumbnail is from Animation Mentor
Hi guys, if you find this video valuable please remember to share 😊
I recently graduated from a university and a lot of my friends and I are in the same position. We realized before finishing that we weren't learning what we need to, but we stayed because we thought might as well finish and get the degree (helps with working abroad). I don't fully regret it tho, because I have a good community of friends from uni who like to help each other out. Some of us even recommended each other for jobs.
We're learning from small online courses now, but are really struggling to create decent portfolios and I feel like we need at least another 2 years to catch up to industry entry level quality.
(Also, research individual needs regarding legal matters that can come in the way, especially for international students. For e.g. immigration is hard when you only get contract jobs)
Thank you, very much! I from Russia, and my English not so strong, but I watch your tutorial and it’s amazing thing that you do for all of us! It’s easy to understand! You are great teacher! We really need helps, like you do! :)
I am currently working my first job and it's been quite a struggle (I've learnt to hate robots 😂) so it gives me motivation that an animator I admire can open up about their personal mistakes in their journey as well.
Thank you for sharing.. I am in a similar situation now.. 3 years in a school and I've spent more time on english, art history, etc than on 3d animation..
Your videos and others like Sir Wade, Jean Denis Haas and Beau Pratt are really helping me to learn what I've been waiting to learn
Thank you!!
Happy to hear that
Love your videos Alessandro! I just graduated from Animation Mentor in Fall 2019 and it was such a great and challenging experience for someone like me who had no experience and I strongly believe it put me on the right path. I learned so much more than I did at my short time at Academy of Art. Anyone reading this comment - if you're thinking about learning 3D animation, definitely make sure you do your research and find a place with great experienced teachers. Alessandro and I would tell you Animation Mentor is one of those places.
I had a very similar experience, but I took the scary decision to drop out of my university to save money and time. It turned out to be the best thing for my career. At the time I felt like I potentially threw my career away, but looking back it was the best choice I could've done.
@@abouttam Well, I can say that I went onto working for Sony for 2.5years. Recently we finished Spiderman Across the Spider-Verse. The hard work never stops though.
Life it's about what you WANT to do and what you actually CAN do. We all have different opportunities and most of the times our choices are based on what we are able to choose. I've almost finished college I'm attending for 3 years by now and from a skill/knowledge point of view I felt and I still feel is not enough. The choice was based on what I could do, even I roughly knew about online courses, and I don't totally regret it. I had 3 difficult years that from time to time made me think I wasn't good enough to do what I was aspiring for and at the same time because I'm nowhere (almost at the end of this journey) I feel this continuous willingness of learning animation tells me that "Yes, I'm able to become an animator." I just need to hold on a little bit more and take the right decision.
Thank you, Alessandro! I felt your struggles, but I also felt that there is still hope and all I need is to make the right decisions at the right time!
Thank you very much for all these sincere videos your making for our community! Means a lot!
Un abbraccio Titi! :D
of course there is hope, i didn`t say that just because you took the wrong school you are doom to fail, is just that will make you waste money and time, when you will realize that there are more efficient way to learn and that some school are simply not very good.
Ciao
Ciao Alessandro, I love how honest you are in all your videos. I fell for the same 'prestigious school' idea, but in Europe. I am in my second semester in Animation Mentor. From day 1 I realized everything that had been missing in my educational life, it's like seeing the love of your life after dating girls at random lol. 10/10 would recommend.
Great channel and advice! I've been in the industry for 15 years and it all resonates with me. Keep up the great work!
man i wish i could watch all of your videos at once lol so inspiring man
I watched this video too late. Like you I'm wasting 3 years. I'm in my third year, so I decided to finish this just for the certificate. But I've more from youtube than from school. I wish I had signed up for AnimationMentor cause the pricing is about the same. And it was expensive for my family, and can't go to AnimationMentor now cause we can't spend that kinda money twice. It sucks. But I'm sure I'll pull through.
same is with me now I dont know what should I do
Thanks for this. I went to a school that I consider was very good for me (even though it was more of a generalist course than animation specialist, I learned a lot about the basics) but even then I think I would be lost without Google and RUclips. These videos help a lot to find the right learning path.
These are the things most students doesn't actually think about. Institutions also promising to even give them placements and students who lack the motive gets convinced easily. Eager to gain lots of knowledge from you further.
Exactly 👏
I had my first line test at an animation studio in Canada! in my 3rd year of animation school, thank you for these videos Alessandro!!!!
I just love u man , it's great to follow u , keep going
I think I might end up going down a similar path. I started doing animation mentor after graduating from my college animation program and I loved it, but then I got a job as a 2D animator for 3 years that worked out pretty well until I wasn't happy there anymore. Now I'm working as a 2D animator in Manchester for a while, but after that I'm not sure where I want to go. After seeing this video it just occurred to me that I don't immediately have to go back to finding work again, I could go back to animation mentor and build a proper 3D animation reel if I wanted to. Something to think about...
But yes, I also didn't realise in high school that art schools can be scams. The idea never even occurred to me, so I think we need to create more awareness to high school students that it's necessary to REALLY look into the school, and see what their alumni is like before deciding to go there.
Exactly, share the video so hopefully someone watch it before doing the same mistake
Thanks for sharing your mistakes as well as your triumphs! I learn a lot from you, thanks.
Very good solid suggestions Alessandro. Love it this is so valuable for ppl wanting to get in to the industry. Will follow this series like a hawk.
Thx so much for what your doing ❤️
Thanks, and don't forget to share 😊

Great video! Thank you so much for your videos!
thank you so much. I am planning to go to Canada this year for visual effects and your tips were phenomenal!
Make sure you chose wisely my friend
@@acamporota Sir yes sir!
Thank you for making this video...🥰
Hi Alessandro! Thank you for this! Have been following you videos religiously for a bit now and they’re always helpful. Something I would love for you to talk about is getting a job internationally as you have the experience. This is an insecurity I’ve had and want to do things right. My passport doesn’t allow me easy access to either Europe, US or Canada, which is where most animation happens. I’ve been thinking of studying in a one year institution in Canada, which would then make eligible for a work permit over there. I thinksit’s a great chance to get it since a lot of work is contract based. Although ideally I would love for a more stable position in a big studio not necessarily in Canada and i think it’s what you and some other AM international grads have achieved.
Where you from?
@@acamporota Hi! I'm from Ecuador
it the same situation for me i went to an animation institute they promised to get placements to different studios . Was excited as soon i finished my course they said we will let you know . Thats it never heard from them
Thank you so much mr.Alessandro.... Valuable message
Hey Alessandro I have a request ..can you pls make some videos like faical animation do's and don'ts ....tips and tricks...principal of facial animation..some thing like that.. :D
you are so inspirational!
Thank you for your story! Very helpful!
Your my first teacher in animation ❤️
I was going to say that too
Thank you so much for sharing your story Mr. Alessandro!
I've actually made the same mistake, got myself into a university where they teach us a variety of subjects including filmmaking , motion graphics , game development , 3d animation etc. It took me a lot of time to realize that I can't be good at everything so I have to choose one. After I chose animation, I started studying on my own and doing research. But I'm finding it too hard to manage the time to study animation on my own while managing university projects :( I'm focusing all my time and energy into this and yet feel like it's never gonna be enough. I would like to ask you a few questions -
1. Is it absolutely necessary to find a team to work with as a 3d animator ? Or can you work remotely ?
2. Is there any cheap alternative to animation mentor ?
Again thank you for your videos! Your guidelines are very valuable to students like me! Keep them coming! :)
Well you can work in a studio or as a freelance.
If the school are too expensive you can try with a private mentor. But it depends how fast you lear. Everything has pro and cons
Damm so true im also in university and facing the same thing .I think everwhere the condition is same .But after hearing his story I was so broken and what he has to go through to become such excellent animator.
Thank you so much for your Videos. It helps a lot
Thank you so much for sharing this! Do you think there will be jobs in 3d animation for a long time? Or do you think future tech will take over those careers?
Hai Alessandro , I love your tutorial and it's very helpfull , keep going. I'm also trying to learn animation by myself. As you mentioned in your vedio about future of the job which we are looking forward . I would like to know about the future of 3d animation , is it get disappeared in coming year because of motion capturing technology or other cool technology? I asked this question because at present you are working in animation industry, so you know exactly what changes are happening in industry. Could you please reply over this comment?
Very intelligent question.. For photo realistic animation there is a chance that in future the mocap plus machine learning will create perfect animation. So my suggestion is to learn very good acting performance or action choreography that actor and machine are not able to replicate, learn layout and editing might be helpful as well.
Could you please make a vedio regarding this topic. I think it might be helpful for those who want to become an 3d animator in future.

Thank you ,very much!!!!for sharing this!!!
(sorry for my bad English)
I'm a oversea student studying at a university in Taiwan from Malaysia , my major is Multimedia Design. Today is my 127th day studying aboard in Taiwan , since I left home on October 31 last year .I really interested in 3D animation , but in university , they teach us 2D graphics , music class , Chinese class ,digital photography , html web design and applications , digital content industry , gym class , IT applications and finally 3D modeling .I know everything has pros and cons that maybe I can learned many things and skill in university, but this made me confusing my future because there are not many job opportunities for multimedia design department in my school. (ToT)
Do you have any suggestions for me ? Thank you very much!!!
Again thank you for your videos!!!!! This video really helpful for a confused student like me (^v^)
Thank you so much for sharing this 😊
Looking handsome
is the job good
Thanks for sharing this 😊
Thank you for your story, It's Very helpful. Sir, I wanna learn 3d Animation like you. Sir, I've got a question that I have a character from a well known Online School. Can I Use it for my future demos ?? I'm not from that School...
If they find out, you could be in trouble, i will suggest you not to do it
Thanks for this video. Help me a lot about what should i do now. The current problem i have now is .. i don't know where to start. Should i doing the ball bounce exercises, 12 principles. Is doing basic exercises are very needed? Or can i just start to animate a rig and doing body mechanic or acting?
Always start from the basics
Here's a good guide for practice: www.animatorisland.com/51-great-animation-exercises-to-master/
Remember you can't do the more advanced exercises unless you master the basics
Why did you chose animation mentor? I'm also currently thinking between animation mentor and animschool. Any thoughts? Because for me its a trouble..its very expensive and people there from both sides have someone that was really happy....it cant be that both of them are great options, can it? :) Thank you
This is the subject of my next vudeo 😉
Same Story
Same here. I've learned much more from online schools and tutorials than University. It's a shame fore sure, but, it's the truth. The University mentality is stuck around 80's model. they not growed side by side with the internet.
Exactly
In your opinion
Will artificial intelligence replace animators?
I have a video about that
Hi dude, I have a question if you could answer, please!!
I just finish high school and I want to go make an advanced diploma in 3d animation and VFX in Australia. Thé fact IS that this school doesn't make thé theoretical knowledge and bases (draw character etc) they only make practice on the computer. So before entering this school I would like to go to the other school where I'll learn this part (theoretical and bases knowledge). Do you think an advanced diploma in visual art would be enough? Or where should I go?
Depending on what you want to learn... For animation you don't need any of that.. There are better solutions....just careful because there are a lot school that are way too expensive and are not worth it... Don't do my same mistakes
@@acamporota i want to learn the bases, drawing character etc. In fact i would like to learn the part of animation who's not on computer. Wich kind of degree should i do...? And for thé school, yeah i've Seen that.. 😅
I want to be an animator and work in this industry but is there any chance that animators be replaced by AI /Robots ?
Hello sir, I am interested in applying to centennial college in Toronto. I looked for their students in their demo reel and it turns out every student has a job in the industry. I did this with 2019 and 2018 visual effects demo reels. Moreover I even called them and asked a few questions a few days back and their demo reel is very good too!. Is this a green signal?? I really want to be a vfx artist or an animatior =)
Would you mind to send me the link of their reel?
