It took tremendous amount of time to make this, but it was fun as hell. Kudos to those non-Greeks who can read greek. I hope it's at least understandable. Some of the texts are fragments of historical sources. If someone recognize from which Byzantine sources I took these fragments, my deepest respect to you.

@@PunchlineEverytime that's a good point, but don't forget it was a spinoff of the already extremely popular Roman Empire manga and anime. It even had a cameo of some characters from Christianity, which was one of the most well-known franchises too. So it's not too surprising it had a lot of following.
They kind of butchered the Roman Empire storyline tbh, but the Christianity storyline was very enriched by this show. That franchise was much more popular during and after Byzantine Empire.

@@yodabaki970 maybe the tribal germanics could've been running the empire's borders, but not the empire itself
@@konugardian2374 nah the elitism keeping them away from the actual levers of power crippled the empire. New ethnic groups romanizing and eventually taking power was a key aspect to roman longevity. For example the spanish generals who were almost all from working class to at best obscure noble backgrounds that became the emperors that stabalized the empire during the crisis of the third century. By the last century or so the most competent leaders in the west were men who were Goths and Vandals and Frank's yet they were kept from the levers of power that it would have been for the betterment of all they had been leading.

Mehmed II is one of the best anime villians of all time. I wanted to throw away my computer when I saw him taking Constantinople in the last episode.
He really is. He's the perfect fusion of understandable motives and a necessary enemy. The way episode 1453 continuously jumped between Konstantine and Mehmed really helps cement the magnitude of the possibility of Rome falling and what it would mean for Europe, all whilst making it clear that Mehmed can't turn back, and is bound by honour to take the city, or die trying. It makes his final march into Hagia Sophia both completely devastating and awe-inspiring. Best antagonist, 10/10

Historically speaking, to make this even more epic, the Byzantine Empire had become the final bastion of the Christian religion in an era where Islam was conquering the world.
They resisted fiercely but remained silent. But do you know why today the world does not pray to an Islamic god and instead Christianity still has a lot of presence? This is because although the Byzantine Empire fell, it resisted long enough for a new Christian crusade to purge the Islamic religion to begin in the Germanic Empire.
In short, the Byzantine Empire fell but not in vain.
Many historians describe the Byzantine resistance as incredibly important since, had it lasted less, the papacy would not have had enough time to organize the most important crusade.

@E.N.A نجم شمال افريقيا (B) we BUILT Constantinople. We chose its location and made it a metropolis of the world. Sadly, today, after it was stolen and in your hands, it no longer carries the same world renown and power it once did.
You see, what made it great in the past is that under us, many different ethnicities were allowed to flourish. There were Armenians, Greeks, westerners, Muslims and all types of people who brought their ideas. It was the New York and London of its day.
After the Turks and in the time since, they slowly cleansed the city of its variety of peoples and today it is merely the largest city in Turkey and fairly irrelevant as a world metropolis. London, New York, Tokyo etc have replaced it. Your false moon god was always an intolerable one, and so the lands you rule over are not welcoming to innovation. People from all over the world do not flock to your lands to bring their new ideas. In short, you took the city, and turned it into mediocrity.

"Alms, I beseech thee. Alms for Belisarius, who once scattered gold in these streets."
The framing and composition on that scene were perfect, especially if you compare and contrast with the same location in the earlier Justinian Arc episode entitled The Last Triumph. And, yes, I know it's an ahistorical event, but "when truth becomes legend, print the legend".

Am I the only one who thinks that the helenistic euro franchise should have stopped at season 1 when Alexander died?
It saddens me how successful the ottoman spin-off series became.
The Roman Empire franchise only had the trilogy as canon:
The Roman Republic
Roman Empire
The Byzantine Empire
It had a non-canon prequel:
Etruscan Legends
The Byzantine Empire franchise had itself prequels whose timeline runs parallel to Etruscan Legends and the Roman Republic franchise and was called Hellenic Chronicles.
After the Byzantine Empire series ended there are several spinoffs, OVAs, doujinshi, fanfiction, and games to the franchise:
Holy Roman Empire was a German ripoff
Ottoman Empire was a Turkish fanfiction
Russian Empire was a bootleg
Fascist Italy was a terribly made doujinshi by Mussolini
The game United States of America and Manifest Destiny was based on the Roman Empire franchise.

Saddest anime death! 1453
The writers made a mistake by making the villian of the new season, The Ottomans, gain too much power
I've heared a rumour that said in the spinoff series, "Europa: After the Fallen Greeks", the Ottomans will have a personality and a complex backstory. I personally don't believe in these rumours though.
At least they appear more interesting than the last season mail villain, the 4th Crusade. That one had a nice plot twist, but other than that it brought the series to a halt.
Bertú The Justinian I./Roman Restoration and Alexios Komnenos/First Crusade Arcs were the best ones in my opinion.
There is a spin-off manga where Poland fight with The Ottomans in 1683 but then you have a plot twist when Austria Prussia and Russia join their forces to kill him. Hope they will make anime adaptation
But then I hear rumours of a Russia arc called: Thirdu Romu!
