Just wanted to throw in a correction as a long time fan of the game. The earlier season universal cards are cycled out in tournament play, but the old warbands and their warband specific cards are still valid. Still means you need to shell out for new universal cards to pimp out your deck but at least you'll never be wasting effort assembling and painting your favorite warband.
That's good to know. I've got the old Skaven warband somewhere that I bought when I got a copy of the game because I thought they looked really cool. Will have to see if I can dig out their old cards too
I like idea of a the Gateway Games Series. There are so many different miniature games out there beyond the core Games Workshop Warhammer Age of Sigmar and 40k. I like how you discussed both the game mechanics and the miniatures. Any thoughts about looking at mini agnostic systems like One Page Rules, Frostgrave/Stargrave, and Gaslands?
@@MSPaints Could we also see a game of Warhammer Epic / Epic Armageddon Space Marine between you and Luke of Geek Gaming Scenics? I think you mentioned it in your Epic video and Luke was interested in 3D printing 6mm Epic after his 10mm Kings of War video.
I've looked in the comments, and have not found (so far) anyone recognizing and respecting the fact that you put the chords to Underworld's Born Slippy in the intro of your video. So dear sir, pun recognized and appreciated! Cheers from Belgium
"Space Hulk" was my gateway game, and to this day I play Genestealer Cults in all my skirmish activities. (I've deffo looked at some of the Underworlds warbands and asked myself, '... can I convert this into something usable in 40K?') As an adult with spending money, though, I went "Shadow War: Armageddon" -> "Kill Team 2018" as far as gateways go. 10-20 models a side, games lasting an average of an hour, fewer moving parts to remember under stress.
Came here from zorpazorp and subscribed after one video. Totally buying underworlds as i had no idea it was setup this way. Video made me laugh several times.
I picked up Bladeborn just before Christmas - it has cards in it that you can use with certain Underworlds warbands, plus rules/cards to use those warbands in WarCry.... making it a gateway game to a gateway game, while also being a gateway game to a skirmish game... which can also be considered a gateway game to Age of Sigmar. Once I realised that, I had to go and have a lie down... I love the idea of a gateway game series and I'll be tuning in for more - keep up the good work!
A bit late to this video but it was quite prophetic as the Rivals format that followed has made this game even easier as a step in. I love it purely for the fact you get to sample some amazing character models from a faction without feeling the need to buy an army. And if you do, they can be used in AoS! Happy days. Always a fan of a good little beer and pretzels game that can be set up and played on the fly. Great vid. Looking forward to mooching through the channel.
That method to paint up the gold armor was a slice of fried gold. Intrigued now by this game, I love the versatility of being able to play it anywhere.
I have SO MANY minis lying around and knowing there are boards out there that basically take anything is an awesome reason to actually paint those up. Awesome paint job!
Lovely thoughts. Completely concur. As more of a painter than a gamer, I love that these small boxes provide opportunities to paint new things that can be played for 2.
Just picked this up today. Grabbed the Direchasm boxset along with the Crimson Court and the Hexbane Hunters (both of which are just bad ass looking minis), because if you're going to have demons and vampires why not have some wicked looking witch hunters to throw down with them. And there's those elf guys too... but witch hunters! Plus, it's a nice bonus that there are Warcry stats for most of the earlier warbands and my son wants to get into Warcry, so win, win. A gateway games series is great. There are a lot of great games out there that many people don't know about that don't cost an arm and a leg to get into. Hell, I didn't even know they came out with a Terminator game until you featured it!
That was really useful. A solid review with zero hype. More in the same style would welcome. Snuck in a couple of nifty painting tips too. Multitasking Dave! Soz re headaches fella. Cat still white.

A really useful, and as always fun and hilarious, intro to underworlds. I’ve bought some of the warbands purely for the miniatures. This made me think I might play the game too. I was put off a bit by the deck building having had my arse handed to me on a plate as a beginner in collectible card games.
The miniature angle kind of balances it out again. Sure you can get rushed against a prepared player, but it’s way less painful than in card games haha

Great vid! Only one thing to add, which is it works really pretty well at 3-4 player, which makes it an especially good and sociable way of giving non-warhams folk a look at what it's about. With the new season, I've tapped out but that's fine because there are so many great looking warbands already out which I haven't had the chance to look at yet, and I'm only interested in casual play.
