This seemed an interesting story, and I was onboard with it, until they reveal that the Aquillian breathe methane. How did the main character stumble into the showers when he wasnt able to breathe in that environment? Seems a slight lapse in foresight.
If you think about the theories of an ancient civilization that pre-dates the rise of life on Earth seeding the planets with the building blocks of life, it's not hard to visualize the concept that a recessive gene could lie dormant waiting for just the right circumstances to reunite "cousin" species. Built in triggers designed to ignite the next step in evolution. After all, we haven't been able to solve the riddle of what has triggered the different advances in our own evolution yet. Maybe it's a built-in thing that just needs the right circumstances.
