    I freaking LOVE Beethoven's codas. And his music in general of course. Lieds, Opera, Sonata, String Quartet/Trio/Quintet and so on, I love it all. But this piece is one very dear to me. Along with String Quartet 1, 8, 13 and 16. I could go on and on with the list, but of his String Quartets, this is on my top 5 for sure.
    Also, cute cat - +Jamison Sanchez

    "OP. 59 QUARTETS OPENED A NEW CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF CHAMBER MUSIC." Beethoven's Symphonies, An Artistic Vision, Lewis Lockwood, Norton, 2017, p. 82. "No one before Beethoven had opened a movement so idiosyncratically as he does the Scherzo of his F major Quartet, Op. 59, No. 1, with its four-bar phrase that is a fully intelligible and well-made musical sentence though it has only one pitch from beginning to the end - the low B flat on the cello." Same, p. 151. "The re-positioning of the slow movement (placed third, as opposed to the traditional second) allows Beethoven to forge an expressive bridge to the finale as the slow movement ends. Other examples include the 'Archduke Trio', Piano sonatas Opp. 106 and 110, and the Ninth Symphony." Same, p. 211.
    The cello solo at 37:01 has A (not A-flat) at the eighth bar in both the Breitkopf & Hartel edition [Dover] and the Eulenberg edition; however, it is always played as A-flat for a smoother transition to the minor mode.

    Playing this as first piece with a new group of musician I've met. Wish me good luck the first violin part is fiendishly difficult, I'd rather take any of the Paganini caprices over this

    This is the brilliant Takacs Quartet, isn't it. It sounds a bit muted, but thanks for uploading the full thing like this, and with score.

    • @timothythorne9464

      Zack Wyvern it's incredible. They take the first movement at a brisker pace than other performances I've heard.
      Again, like the Archduke piano trio, Beethoven opens this piece with a striding, stately, march-like, classically inspired theme. But what he does with the material in the lengthy development section is quite far removed from orthodox classical-period procedure.

    31:39 fun fact at the theme russe most of us treat the downbeat as the upbeat and its so hard to feel the downbeat as the downbeat

    • @dzinypinydoroviny

      The same trick goes for the scherzo. Most of us hear the first three notes of the violin theme as an anacrusis when it comes back but on the first beat.

    This is a wonderful quartet. I love the Scherzo. The finely balanced craftmanship of the form is thoroughly Beethovenian but the second theme sounds strikingly like Schubert (also a bit Chopinesque) in my opinion. All in all it must have hit the contemporaries as an unbeliavably modern piece of music.

      I love when someone hears a piece of Beethoven’s and they ask “this is Beethoven?” Just goes to show you how diverse his music is or how little of his music people know.

    • @timothythorne9464
      @timothythorne9464 4 года назад +7

      Cory Fields his music is incredibly diverse, even within the time period they were written. At one extreme in the middle period there's the Eroica symphony, and Symphonies 5, 6 and 7, and the Appassionata sonata: very forward looking pieces rich in Romantic rhetoric. At the other extreme are Classically inspired pieces like the trio op. 70, no. 2 or the 8th Symphony. The only common denominator within all middle period Beethoven is that it's great!
