It would help if he learned how to use the mid-scoop and lower the gain to clean up the sound on the MT-2. Plus, that particular pedal benefits from an EHX Noise Suppressor pedal, which is pretty cheap.
I was watching this video on the SmartTV when I heard, from the kitchen, the voice of my old grandmother telling me: Hey Junior, no need to run for the photo-finish camera, this fu**ing Metal Zone is by far better compared to the Marshall. And I answered her : Granny Good, don't talk so loud, the neighbors are listening. Do you want them to call the Taste Squad ? They are not in death metal as you do. May the mighty Lord have mercy on your poor granny soul.
I think it just depends on they sound you like and the style you like playing . I much prefer the metal zone . Because I love tons of distortion. It just my personal preference it doesn't mean that I'm right or wrong it what I like .
The Jackhammer is a very versatile pedal but it works best on the overdrive setting. The distortion setting is that speaker drowned in blankets sound someone spoke of.
Great comparison man... But it would be fair if Jh1 vs Boss DS1 because these two pedals are suitable for classic hard rock tone while Mt2 is more to thrasy, death black tone...
The mids on the Jaclhammer are CUT only. The flat setting for the mids is with the "Contour" knob at minimum. From there you can only scoop the mids, choosing the frequency at wich the scoop occurs with the "Freq" knob. Anyway, good comparison of both pedals.
Thanks for the video. I bought the JH-1 recently, i'm definitely stealing some settings from your video 🙂 i have owned both, i would say that they're both very much different, for different kinds of metal/rock. If you wanna go extreme go with MZ if you wanna have more Hard Rock/Heavy sounds then it's the JH. It's basically a marshall head in pedal, it sounds more like the sound is from a head then a pedal. It's also crazy how a little touch on the knobs changes completely the whole sound. It takes a while to get the right sound that you're looking for. Right now i mainly play with my stratocaster and JH gives me great Joe Perry kinda sounds. I love its distortion but not much its overdrive cause it sounds so bright for my taste. It's also notable that one setting that sound great in distortion mode sounds completely different in overdrive mode and vice versa. I think it's the best distortion pedal for a guitar with true single coils
Finally gave in yesterday and bought the Jackhammer at Rogue Music in New York City for $45 US. It's the only distortion pedal I've used ever that can run totally clean for me (in O/D mode). Amazing! Would be great for turning anemic amps into Marshalls, then using your favorite drive pedals in front! Of course, I totally dig the DIST setting!
I have a Marshall JH-1 Pedal. It's a weak pedal if you're going to use it as Metal Pedal, it's ok for Classic Rock. You can't get a responsive distortion sounds from it and get great Harmonics. These two are different Pedal. The MT-2 has more clipped distortion sound used for Metal.. you can easily make Harmonics from it. The JH-1 is good for classical rock distortion.
I have a behringer Ultra Metal, (Metalzone clone). And a Jack Hammer. I use the Ultra Metal as an EQ and for tone before the JH-1, zero distortion on the Ultra Metal. I really like that sound!
I choose the Metal Zone here, it kicks major ass. I have a Diezel modded Metal Zone though and it's way better than these 2 here. Thanks for posting this Simon. You rock.
The marshall pedal is the clear winner, it just needs more treble (or maybe its a contour thing) something to clear the 'mudd' but its not even that bad tbh!
1. how can you tell from a video- 2. it all depends what amp you use, 3. I have owned them both, the MT-2 is not for those who like "tone"- and the JH-1 is huge and ballsy but limited in what you can use it for. so, who knows. no matter what, play loud.
Antonio Carvalho As Victor has said, it can be used either way but I find the overdrive setting to be more user friendly. Especially if you're doing neck pickup solos
MZ - Jar full of bees JH - Speaker drowned in blankets Hmm... I just couldn't decide ; ) But seriously, you actually managed to find a few good sounds in both machines, that's quite the achievement!
@@LFC-Star No, it's not, people on YT made that popular in recent years and it seems to work out well but it was never meant for that, I'm sure. Listening back now after 4 years I'd say the MetalZone isn't that bad in some situations here ...but the other one still sounds pretty unusable, I mean a horribly boomy sound with the bass almost completely down?! What was that designer thinking? Or is it a bass cut and it was on full most of the time?
@@DerEchteBold seen Ola Ungland;s video on the MT2? He makes it clear it sounds shit in the fromnt of an amp but when in the FX Loop it's awesome. So BOSS clearly designed it that way as a preamp pedal. I have a MT2 too but my combo amp hasn't a FX loop.. but my rack mount does so maybe I'll put it in my rack setup.
For heavy distortion Metal Zone wins this, For the amp sound it's the JH....2 different genre's of tone here....I have a MZ i run thru my rig & I love it, I prefer the thrash hardcore tone....
JH is a good pedal for anyone who wants something on the "hard" line. For those who want something in the "heavy" line it leaves something to be desired. But in comparison to the MZ I prefer the JH.
Most other pedals give a nice fuzz or a nice drive amp distortion sound. Nothing sounds as HARSH as the metal zone lol love that shit. Jackhammer sounds great! But can almost get that sound on my amp with my Sansamp (crunch) pedal.
El overdrive que tiene el Jackhammer es de lujo... No se nota en youtube, pero muy versátil, crujiente y cálido... y la disto... Mmmm.... no me ha terminado por convencer... es muy grave (es solo mi opinión) Saludos
Nah. As I said previously, it works best in overdrive mode. At least for me since I hate hearing more of the effect than what I'm playing and clarity of tone, while I don't use a lot of gain, is something I tend to gravitate more toward than oodles of sustain. I can use a compressor for the latter in front of the overdrive
I own both and have to say that I prefer the jackhammer but the bass cut is just not enough cut. the mz at least lets you cut bass to practically out. it's my only real complaint. I don't like buzz and the JH1 keeps me out of buzz land. IMHO the JH1 is just for me. I actually didn't watch the video, I went totally by ear on this one and these are two very very different pedals.
I have the Jackhammer and play it through a DSL100H and it just souds way too 'bassy'. I think my pedal might be broken or something because it sounds way inferior to the hi gain channel of the amp
Your pedal isn't broken and that's one of the characteristics I favour about the JH1 but as I said, the JH1 is best used in overdrive mode. I think for its price the JH1 punches way above its weight
Bats For a smooth singing lead (which are these things probably not made for) he dialed in two pretty similar sounds, just compare at 11:30 and 12:52, the JH still has a bit more 'depth' there, but it's really close! And the Obituary sound out of the MZ at 8:10 was pretty authentic. Though it seems hard to find the not completely awful settings, some people may actually find a use in this 'most hated' device ; )
The Metal Zone may sound ok in this display but in a live setting it's way too bright and harsh unless that's the sound you're going for. It is impossible to tame that harshness without cutting your treble on the amp because cutting the treble on the pedal still doesn't help. If you're like me, you want a pristine clean sound on your clean channel and an od/distortion to use on that same channel when you want a Heavy sound. The MZ makes that impossible. Maybe the Jackhammer can work for this but I can't find one video on youtube where someone actually turns UP the treble in dist. mode to get that tone that cuts through but isn't overly harsh. The OD mode seems bright enough but lacks the DIST guts that I want.
Jackhammer , man I sold the MT so fast , what a piece of crap compared to the Jack...different sound yes but very tunable , the MT is a white noise piece of shite. Crap knobs...
The Marshall by far. Have owned both. JH-1 is more natural sounding in a variety of applications.
*natural-sounding
@@dildojizzbaggins6969 Mhmm, big difference.

I have both and use Metal Zone for 80’s Metal and The Marshall Jack Hammer for Classic Rock on the Overdrive setting
Good pedals to play some old school metal like Darkthrone, Burzum, Obituary and Celti Frost.
I have a behringer Ultra Metal, (Metalzone clone). And a Jack Hammer. I use the Ultra Metal as an EQ and for tone before the JH-1, zero distortion on the Ultra Metal. I really like that sound!
Marshall JH-1 great sounding of clarity string and tone.

Cheers Dave. Glad you liked it. I'd like a modded Metal Zone. See how they compare.
I just bought a MT-2 a couple weeks ago from a pawn shop $75.. I like the sound of it.
if your amp has an FX Loop put the MT2 in the FX loop.
The marshall pedal is the clear winner, it just needs more treble (or maybe its a contour thing) something to clear the 'mudd' but its not even that bad tbh!
I'd say it's worse than bad.
The treble comes across best in the overdrive setting. In distortion mode it's somewhat reminiscent of a Big Muff

hey guys, the Jackhammer is a distortion or overdrive pedal?
both! overdrive and distortion

You can always manage JH-1 sound with the tone knobs of your guitar, metalzone is better suit for stepping papers, hold doors, etc.:-7
MT2 is really a preamp pedal. not for putting in front of the amp.. it's for putting through the FX loop.

That's nonsense, it's sold for decades as a regular guitar pedal and that's what is.
Marshall is really standing on the shoulders of boss in this situation.

You actually use a Metal Zone? Lemme guess, you also play a Line 6 Spider with the mids at 0? (joking of course)
That freezing moon riff is soooooo evil. I love it.

Nice comparison Simon. Great work. Liked the JH-1 the most.
MT 2 is a distortion and jh is overdrive. Are diferents. MT 2 + light Drive perfect combination
If u put a TS9 in front of the Marshall it will slay the Metalzone, Marshall has body but lacks definition, the TS9 will add that,
Mario Figueira ts9 after the JH1?
Metal Zone has that sharp unpleasant bee in a jar sound on most settings.
Doesn't most black metal sound like that anyhow?

JH'+ BB2 = 😎👍
Good metal tone I get: JH-1 on overdrive with gain about 3:00-4:00 and add before it a tube screamer with gain about 12:00
I've got both and I like them both.
If you're careful, you can balance the JH-1 selector knob between OD and DS and get a really nice sound with more mids and treble.
Thanks to play watain...best video...i will buy jackhammer.
Boss Metal Zone MT-2 is the best, but for Black Metal is the Marshall Jackhammer JH-1 the best
why was the JH-1 OD mode not used. the dist mode is crap... the OD mode is golden
Yes, for far. I have one, and this is true.
well you fucking idiot, you'll see,the comparison is against a metal distortion pedal, stupid bitch
I agree.
Nice!
What if you use JH's overdrive (with less gain) to boost Metalzone (or the inverse)? Ah, nice playing, tough (I got the Burzum reference! haha)
:)
Metal zone all the way!!!
El overdrive que tiene el Jackhammer es de lujo... No se nota en youtube, pero muy versátil, crujiente y cálido... y la disto... Mmmm.... no me ha terminado por convencer... es muy grave (es solo mi opinión) Saludos
Bit like comparing apples with oranges. Just not the same category of pedal. Decent sound though…
Should jackhammer be used as a preamp?

good review, thanks alot
No worries
Metal Zone sounds like a black metal guitarist dream. Abbath? The Marshall sounds like it would be good for doom metal.
What are some good settings to get a Burzum / Darkthrone sound with the Boss MT-2?
Everything at noon. Maybe the high knob at 1.
Not once did he put the Marshall on the OD setting. Would like to hear that.
It's so differen pedal.... How did you compare it?? MT2 - for hard metal, JH-1 - for rock.

JAckhammer has not punch (mute/lows buff) ... in droped riffs will be a little restricted
Really don't understand how people can prefer the metal zone, I can't think of a situation where that tone would be practical.

It depends on the music you listen to.
Deym thats is totaly differnt! MT2 for metal, JH1 for classic rock. you can use Both. Jh1 for solo
is it possible to get the jackhammer a little more brighter ?? not as the mz tough
yes, you have overdrive channel that was not used in this video.
Run the metalzone thru the effects return on your amp and it will devour the jackhammer!!!!
